  • Any limit as to how many you can buy?

    • +4

The limit is how many cards you can find in stock

      • How's the stock usually? I haven't tried before

        • +1

In major cities…usually not enough for a few days.
In regional hubs and towns, you can usually find plenty. I wouldn't be panicking trying to get them on the first day as I've found after 2-3 days it calms down and stock comes back.

      • -6

The key is to go a few days before and hide them

    • Your wallet

    • Usually it is:

Unless specified, a limit of 10 cards per day per Rewards Member. For TCN Active Variable ($20–$500) where you choose the amount to load, limit of 2 cards per day per Rewards Member.

  • +5

    From GCDB:

Limit of ten fixed value gift cards per day
Limit of two variable load gift cards per day
You must scan an Everyday Rewards card

These gift cards are sold in the following denominations:
    TCN Him: $30, $50, $100
    TCN Active: $50, $20-500
    TCN Pub & Bar: $50, $100
    TCN Good Food: $100, $200
    DoorDash: $100
    Holiday & Hotel: $20-500

  • Rookie question.. can any of these cards be added to phone wallet?

    • +5

      TCN Active, TCN Him: no.

      Holiday & Hotel, DoorDash: N/A.

TCN Good Food, TCN Pub & Bar: yes, but not directly. You need to go to the relevant website (linked in the table within the deal description) and request to exchange your physical eftpos gift card for a digital Mastercard gift card that can be stored on the TCN app, from where you can view the gift card's details, as well as add them to Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet.

      • +2

Perfect.. thanks for the comprehensive answer :)

        • +2

          No worries.

I forgot to mention this in my comment earlier, but if you want more detailed instructions on exchanging the TCN Good Food gift card or TCN Pub & Bar gift card, there is a relevant FAQ in the wiki page linked at the bottom of the deal description.

      • Hey WM, thanks for the answer. Have you done the swap into digital before? What is the process like and is it convoluted or pretty easy? Appreciate the insight!

        • Read the FaQ above

        • Yes, I have exchanged physical TCN Pub & Bar gift cards for the digital version before, and it was a rather straightforward process. However, I sometimes encountered error messages when trying to submit the exchange form on the TCN website, and I found the easiest way to get around this issue is to register the gift card first.

In terms of a step-by-step guide on the process, the FAQ wiki page linked at the bottom of the deal description has a FAQ covering the process.

      • Newbie question too… Will the physical TCN Good Food or Pub & Bar cards still be useable after getting the digital cards? Or are we limited to the digital ones once the exchange is done?

        • +1

I have not tested this out myself, but I think I read somewhere on the TCN website that the physical gift card will stop working after you exchange for a digital gift card.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Technically they don't stop working, but all the remaining balance is transferred to the digital card. You still have a "working" card with 0 balance lol.

      • found digital version of TCN Him can be added to TCN app then add to wallet.
just got one from FB deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/921747, first time had Him in wallet.

but seems no way on website to covert physical card to digital.

  • +3

Can we use Him to buy Apple Gift Card from JB nowadays?

    • Can't use giftcards to buy giftcards.

  • TCN Him is one way to get the subs for 10% cheaper as well - on both PlayStation’s and Xbox’s stores.

  • Was hoping for a nintendo eshop gift card deal but the Him card is ok i guess

    • +1

in about two weeks there's a deal on them.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/922705

      • Yeah i saw, announced a day after my boys birthday lol, it's alright he got mario vs donkey kong and the kirby switch 2 upgrade so he's happy.

  • +1

For those who can't wait till next week. I think Coles got same deal from tomorrow till next Tuesday.

  • Thanks OP

  • Can TCN Him gift card (or any gift card acceptable at the good guys) be used at The Good Guys Commercial?

    • +1

No. The Good Guys Commercial website doesn't accept any type of gift card.
      Link

  • great

  • +1

There was something like converting good food to restaurant choice, what was that? Does thaat still works and what was the benefit of it? My old brain isn't pulling things out.

    • +4

Add digital good food in shopback then purchase restaurant choice for 3% off. It is not working anymore

      • A pity. It was great to be able to do this. I tried also to buy Restaurant Choice with 7% off on HCF with Good Food Digital but had no luck.

  • Didn't see any card that could be used for regular grocery shopping like Woolworths, Coles, 7 eleven etc. Do they also have such offers for these?

    • Look out for offers like this as you can get supermarket slayer on Special which can be used at major supermarkets.

  • -1

Would I be able to buy a gift card with a Woolies gift card?

    • +1

No. Woolworths does not allow purchasing of a gift card using another gift card - I think their checkout machines grey out the option.
      Link

      • -1

Sucks to hear - thanks for letting me know

  • +1

I presume we don't also get EDR points for these cards? Has anyone used multiple EDR cards at self checkout to get more than the allocated cards on a single day?

    • +1

I presume we don't also get EDR points for these cards?

Woolworths does not awarded standard EDR points on the purchase of any gift cards (and this is in line with the EDR terms and conditions).

The deal terms and conditions mentions nothing about earning any EDR points through this deal, so you should expect to earn no points.

Has anyone used multiple EDR cards at self checkout to get more than the allocated cards on a single day?

I have not, but from a checkout perspective, you should be fine doing that. Whether store staff sre fine that is a different question (especially if you are being served by someone who is quite cautious about selling gift cards, or thinks you are doing multiple transactions to avoid requiring approval from a manager).

  • +1

Don't forget this can be purchased in conjunction with this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/921087, if you buy the supermarket slayer card from Special

  • -1

I’m wondering can we pay for a Restaurant Choice CG on Shopback with a Good Food CG via ApplePay still?

  • +1

Can I use JB HIFI Home card $500 at a standard JB store

To buy new iPhone 17 pro max

Don’t wanna carry 30* cards vs 5 cards

    • +1

The HOME card is not part of the 10% off offer.

  • So to get this right. Max $1000/day. And totally max $2000 but have to come back day after for the other $1000 Or I'm wrong? Thinking of getting tv from jb next few weeks. Or just use wife's card for the other $1000

Edit. Couldn't see the total limit of $2000 in their terms.

  • Can you buy these using VISA Prepaid Cards? https://thevanillaprepaid.com/

  • Has anyone used the TCN Good Food or Pub & Bar at restaurants before? I'm worried that it won't work at most restaurant and only the ones that are approved on the TCN site. Is there anyone who can confirm?

    • +1

Check the Wiki for more info, but it definitely works at restaurants & most eating places. We have used it at mostly Chinese restaurants, yum char, as well as cafes via EatClub. We’ve had Vietnamese, Japanese, used it on Uber Eats via Apple Pay. It even worked on some portals where you pay for food online for dine-in (a ramen place in Melbourne CBD & a few smaller asian restaurants in Adelaide).

I’ve noticed when restaurant is using a fancy POS with a big screen then often the card is declined. We’ve had this happen 2-3 times. Overall, if you dine out often you will almost certainly find places that will accept it, and they don’t need to be restaurants on the Good Food website.

      • Thanks, the wiki told me the card had reports saying it didn't work at all restaurants for some people so I wasn't sure.

        • No prob. There's no way to guarantee it'll work 100% unless you know the MCC of the restaurant, but no harm in trying..

      • +1

I think the "fancy POS" you are talking about is the square register.

There is nothing special about it, but the blackhawk restaurant/cafe choice card used to decline it due to some stupid security policy. This should have been fixed but the Incomm Coles Mastercard gift card now does the same thing when added to a digital wallet. Interestingly, you can swipe the physical card at the same register without any issue.

As long as the MCC is permitted, TCN restaurant cards do not blacklist regular merchants. Shopback is the only blacklisted merchant on the restaurant card as far as I am aware of.

        • Thanks for sharing so TCN restaurant card won’t work if I use shopback pay?

          • @li1123k: IIRC they stopped working with SB pay earlier this year.

        • You can add HCF to that.

      • thanks - regarding your use of it via EatClub, is the EatClub system 'clever' enough to split payments across multiple cards if one of the payment methods is a gift card with insufficient balance to meet the full bill?

        • +1

No, it will give a insufficient funds message.

        • I was able to do it. But it means it is a slow process at POS.

  • Is this available from 2/9 or 3/9? Says tomorrow but T&C said 3/9…

    • It is supposed to start 03 September.

Does the OzBargain deal now say for you tomorrow or in 2 days?

      • +1

It says in 2 days now, thanks.

  • +11
    • +2

That is super worrying and TCN's response was atrocious.

      • -6

Not really, although it is certainly not secure, the loophole is unlikely to be exploited.
Even if technically inclined (BIG if), I don't think those card scratchers would bother to do that when they can simply scratch out the PIN.
So if your card number and PIN are intact, then I don't see why you should be overly worried.

        • +1

when you scratch out the Pin, people will notice it, either they won't buy it or use it straight away.

          • -2

@hihi: They will just seal the PIN back with a new sticker.

        • +3

I don't think you understood the contents of the video. The flaw in the system does not require damaging the card number. It only requires that the malicious party monitor the card status to identify when it has been activated.

I use tools that could perform this action as part of my regular day job. It requires very little effort and I could probably knock one up in about the same time it took the Simon to do this.

It would be not unlike, while actually simpler than, the system I used to allow me to download the power usage data from my Powerpal account.

          • -5

@mpember: I am a dev myself, I know what he is talking about. I am just saying it is very unlikely and unnecessary to brute-force the PIN when they can simply reseal it. Especially they can scratch out the PIN during the process so buyers won't be able to redeem in time.

            • +5

@timedzone: As a dev, you would understand that "nobody will put in the effort" isn't the greatest security policy for financial tech.

              • -1

@mpember: Of course it is a bad practice, all I am saying is as a buyer of TCN gift cards you don't need to be overly concerned as it is not sensible for scammers to do it this way when there is a much easier alternative.

                • +5

@timedzone: The guy in the video who lost $500 might disagree with you.

                  • -4

@gadgetguy: He clearly got a tampered card with card number scratched out too. I wont be surprised if they removed the PIN sticker, recorded the PIN and replaced it with a new sticker.
Scammers need to operate on a large scale to be profitable. As POC of course the youtuber can brute force the PIN on a single card, but scammers need their money fast with limited success rate, so it simply does not make sense for them to spend up to 9 hrs on each card (in the video he took about 10 mins to go through 180 PINs)
Another factor to consider is when a card is not yet purchased, what kind of error logic did TCN implement. Ideally it should return the same generic error even when the PIN is correct, but I am not holding my breath on that.

                    • +4

@timedzone: Did you actually watch the video? All the way through?

He even proved the hack by buying another card and generating the PIN himself without removing anything.

                      • -1

@gadgetguy: Well you are barking on the wrong tree. They can (and definitely should) easily add a captcha on every page but that still doesn't make it any safer. Have fun with your false sense of security then.

                      • -3

@gadgetguy: Btw I did watch the video again, apparently the numbers in my head was wrong. He was bruteforcing at 5 PIN/s which means an ave of 15 mins per card. I would say that is reasonable but still don't worth the efforts of scammers. Their success rate is low so they need the base number to be large, making this a huge waste of their time.

        • +3

Not sure if you are trolling since you claim to be a dev. It is obvious it is a worry unless you are not concerned with loosing the value of the gift card.

          • +1

@QuiOui: Agreed, I won't bother replying any more. He clearly didn't watch and/or understand the video.

          • -3

@QuiOui: Of course I am not trolling. It is undoubtedly a theoretical vulnerability, but unlikely to be exploited.
TCN implementing captcha on all their swap pages won't solve the problem of card tampering. Don't be fooled thinking you are safe even after that is done.
In the states, they are already printing activation codes on activation slips for physical gift cards and that's pretty much the only way to eradicate this issue.

          • @QuiOui: FYI, this is what I meant:
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16881534/redir
If you still think scammers would like to bruteforce the PIN when they can do this in just 5~10 seconds then I got nothing to say :)

            • @timedzone: True but they can automate the cracking of the PIN for multiple cards simultaneously without even removing them from the store and then be alerted to them being active as soon as they get purchased.

              • @donga100: They will want to remove some card numbers anyway so the buyers can't redeemed them in time for a higher success rate.
Of course we could speculate that by keeping the card intact, buyers are less likely to notice the tampering and wont lodge a report to block the card. However from what we have seen so far, the scammers have decided scratching is still the way to go. I am sure their statistics would support their decision.

        • Even if the exploit is resolved the hackers could have already taken photos of the cards and decoded the PIN. I wouldn't buy any of these cards until they have done a complete recall of all existing stock.

  • Please note: the option to swap your physical card for online use is currently unavailable. We expect this feature to be back online within the next 24 to 48 hours. Thanks so much for your patience!

    • You can still use their other captcha protected pages for swaps

    • Looks like it's back up and working now.

in the woolies i work at they are going through the process a recalling all tcn cards until the problem is resolved

    • So what’s this about not save to use or you can’t buy them now I was planning to get some when out but not had a chance to see this vid in full due to an appointment so think I will wait till I hear back on here

  • It’s been a while but can you exchange him to jb digital cards?

    • Yes just did it myself

  • Seems like the promo only applies to $100 denominations for Him cards

    • Nope, i got 10% off the $50 ones i grabbed

  • +2

Just purchased and swapped $2K worth of HIM $100 cards.

    Few points to note:

    • There are multiple revisions of the card hanging on the shelf - all worked with no issues
    • There was plenty of stock at my local
    • The price scans in at $1000 for the 10 cards and it does not take 10% off till the checkout assistant approves the gift card purchase
    • Had no issues buying 2 lots of 10x cards across 2 EDR cards
    • The website is operation for swapping cards again and appears to include extra captchas and randomly asks for more
    • The swap form has "feature" that was put in to help fool the scrapers where the card number is initially rejected as invalid out of all 20 cards I only had one go through first try, I was sure I was typing the card number in correctly, eventually i cottoned on to the fact I could just hit submit again and the card number would be accepted.

    Hope this helps.

    • I also had that issue. First try the card wouldn't work on stop screen until i redid captcha even if i didnt change any card details. Otherwise all good.

    • lucky you.
I can only find HIM $30 cards around my area
