Coles sells two types of gift cards in-store:

• Gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd, including:
  • Coles gift cards,
  • Coles Group & Myer gift cards, and
  • Officeworks gift cards.
• Third-party gift cards, including:
  • Coles Mastercard gift cards
  • JB Hi-Fi gift cards
  • The Card Network (TCN) gift cards, and
  • Ultimate gift cards.

If you are able to check the balance at this website, it is a gift card issued by Coles Group Ltd.

Coles Group Ltd sells their own gift cards and a selection of third-party gift cards on a dedicated gift card website, but this website is always excluded from gift card offers advertised in Coles' catalogues.

If the deal is offering an upfront discount on gift cards, a Flybuys account is only required if the upfront discount is advertised as a Flybuys Member Price.

If the deal is offering bonus Flybuys points on gift cards, a Flybuys account is required.

If the deal is offering bonus value on gift cards, a Flybuys account is not required.

A deal requiring a Flybuys account may require the Flybuys card to be registered first, which would mean that temporary Flybuys cards cannot be used to take advantage of the deal. Please check the terms of the gift card to see whether it includes a clause regarding registered Flybuys cards.

You can sign up to a new Flybuys account through the Flybuys app or the Flybuys website.

You can also pick up a temporary card at a Coles supermarket and scan that to earn points in a transaction.

• You must register a temporary card within three months of the date it was first scanned, otherwise you will forfeit any points earned so far.
• You must register a temporary card in order to redeem any points.

At the time of writing this, there are no known sign-up bonus offers for new Flybuys accounts.

All purchases of gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd at Coles will earn zero Flybuys points.

All purchases of third-party gift cards at Coles will earn 1 Flybuys point for every whole dollar you spend.

If the gift card deal is for bonus Flybuys points for each gift card purchased, the number of bonus points is usually specified in the deal’s terms and conditions.

• Most deals award a set number of points as a bonus (e.g. 1000 bonus Flybuys points if you purchase a TCN Kids gift card), and it will be awarded in addition to the standard points earn rate for third-party gift cards. These kinds of deals do not scale the number of bonus points for different denominations. For the example given before, you will earn 1000 bonus points if you purchase a $30 or $50 denomination TCN Kids gift card.

• Occasionally, a deal will specify the number of Flybuys points you will earn for each whole dollar you spend on gift cards (e.g. 20x Flybuys points on the purchase of Apple gift cards). This number already includes the standard points earn rate for third-party gift cards, so the offer is for 1x standard point and 19x bonus points per whole dollar spent.

All purchases of any gift cards at Coles will not count towards any other bonus points offers. For example, if your Flybuys account is targeted with a spend $120 in one transaction and earn 3000 bonus points and you spend $150 on gift cards, you will not earn 3000 bonus points from that offer.

The deal terms and conditions will also specify the maximum number of gift cards that will earn bonus points or the maximum number of points that will be awarded.

The “value” of Flybuys points is dependent on your redemption preferences. Using 2000 Flybuys points as an example, it is equivalent to:

• $10 in Flybuys Dollars (redeemable on most items at participating retailers), or
• 1000 Velocity Frequent Flyer points, or
• A $10 discount on a single transaction at Coles (only available to Coles Financial Services customers scanning the Flybuys card linked to their account, or Coles customers shopping in certain parts of Australia).

Flybuys points can be manually converted into Flybuys Dollars in lots of 2000, and into Velocity Frequent Flyer points in lots of 1000.

Standard points earned from in-store transactions at Coles should be credited to a Flybuys account within 48 hours of the transaction being completed.

Bonus points should be credited within the same timeframe, unless otherwise stated in the terms and conditions of the bonus points offer.

In reality, Flybuys points earned on purchases of third-party gift cards are usually credited to your Flybuys account around 4:30pm Sydney/Melbourne time on the day after the transaction. However, there are some instances where Flybuys points will not be credited until two or three days after the transaction. This is not common, but can happen from time to time.

If you did not scan your Flybuys card during the transaction and the gift card deal was for bonus points, go back to the store where the transaction took place within seven days with the receipt and your Flybuys card, and ask the service desk to add your Flybuys card to the transaction.

Even though there is a clause in the Flybuys terms and conditions that the Flybuys card must be presented at the time of purchase, OzBargainers have received standard and bonus points if they forgot to scan their Flybuys card at the time of purchase and asked the service desk on the same day to add their Flybuys card.

However, if the gift card deal was for a Flybuys Member Price discount, asking the service desk to add your registered Flybuys card to the transaction will not trigger the discount to be applied to the transaction.

If you notice this before the transaction is finalised, you can simply scan the correct card and any previously scanned Flybuys card(s) will be removed from the transaction. Once the transaction is finalised, it is no longer possible to change the Flybuys card associated to the transaction.

If you did not scan a Flybuys card during the transaction and asked the service desk to add a Flybuys card to the transaction, you cannot ask the service desk later to change the Flybuys card associated with the transaction.

Probably.

Coles/Flybuys seems to calculate a minimum spend requirement based on:

• the cumulative amount spent within the previous week, and
• the minimum spend requirements on previous offers.

Coles/Flybuys seems to include the amount spent on purchases of gift cards in the cumulative amount.

Coles allows Coles Financial Services customers and Flybuys members to instantly redeem 2000 points in-store at the checkout in exchange for a $10 discount. However, the prompt for this redemption option will not appear for any purchases of gift cards.

Yes, you can redeem Flybuys points in the Flybuys Rewards Store for a range of physical gift cards, including:

• Coles
• Target
• Bunnings
• BCF
• A selected range of gift cards issued by TCN.

Gift cards available on the Flybuys Rewards Store are rarely discounted and rarely attract bonus points offers.

• It is against the Flybuys Dollars terms and conditions to use it as a payment method for gift cards.

• If you attempt to redeem Flybuys Dollars on any purchases of gift card at Coles, it will be declined as soon as you swipe the card on the EFTPOS terminal, and the EFTPOS terminal screen will display an Invalid Product Mix error.

Coles has placed restrictions on the usage of the following types of gift cards:

• Coles Gift Mastercards (issued by Indue - no longer available for sale)
• Vanilla Visa gift cards
• Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards (issued by Heritage Bank)

Swiping one of these when purchasing a gift card may trigger an Invalid Product Mix error on the EFTPOS terminal. Please refer to the table below for more information:

NOTE: the table is only intended to list payment cards that have been reported to be blocked by Coles when purchasing at least one type of gift card. Any payment cards not in the list above are not known to be a payment method restricted by Coles and therefore do not appear in the table below.

Gift cards issued by Coles Group (including Coles gift cards and Coles Group & Myer gift cards) cannot be used for any gift card purchases at Coles, as this blocked at all checkouts. Attempting to do so will cause the EFTPOS terminal to display an Invalid Product Mix error as soon as the gift card is scanned or swiped, and staff cannot override this restriction.

It was previously possible to use most gift cards issued by Coles Group to purchase gift cards instore, but:

• This was blocked for purchases of gift cards issued by Coles Group in 2017, and
• This was blocked for purchases of third-party gift cards on 19 April 2023.

It depends on the type of checkout you go to.

Coles’ self checkouts will not allow split payments between multiple permitted card payments. A workaround at a self checkout accepting cash may be to insert cash first into the self checkout, then pay the remaining amount owed using one permitted card payment. However, some self checkouts accepting cash are programmed to refund the cash if the customer then attempts to make a card payment. Staff cannot override these limitations.

Coles’ standard checkouts (i.e. the checkouts operated by a dedicated staff member who packs your groceries for you, or the service desk) are able to do split payments when purchasing gift cards, but this is at staff discretion.

Coles permits a customer to purchase at most five gift cards. More specifically:

• All checkouts will only allow a maximum of five gift cards to be purchased in a single transaction.

• Some store managers or service supervisors may enforce a dollar limit or a lower gift card limit per transaction (or even per day).

• All purchases of gift cards at a self checkout require staff approval.

• Purchases of gift cards totalling $1,000 or more requires additional approval from a supervisor or duty/store manager.

If you scan a staff card on a transaction where you’re purchasing a gift card, Coles’ POS system will automatically remove the staff card.

• If approved, the EFTPOS terminal will display approved. The purchase receipt will also contain gift card activation details between the GST information and the Flybuys card information (for cash-only transactions) or between the GST information and the details for the card(s) used for payment (for transactions paid in full or in part with cards or gift cards). The gift card will automatically be activated after approval (which is usually instant, but may take up to 48 hours in rare circumstances).
• If not approved, the checkout will display an error message alerting staff to the failed gift card approval, as well as print out the purchase receipt. If this happens, take the purchase receipt and the gift card to the service desk and staff can sort out the issue.

If the deal is offering an upfront discount on gift cards, an Everyday Rewards card is only required if the deal's terms and conditions specifically states a requirement to scan an Everyday Rewards card.

If the deal is offering bonus Everyday Rewards points on gift cards, an Everyday Rewards card is required.

You can sign up to a new Everyday account through the Everyday Rewards website. You will be provided a new Everyday Rewards number (as well as a picture of the barcode) as soon as you have finished the sign-up process.

You can also pick up a temporary card in-store and scan that to earn points in a transaction.

• The temporary card must be registered within six months from the date it was first scanned, otherwise you will forfeit any points on the temporary card.
• You must register a temporary card in order to redeem any points.

If you follow this link, you can earn 1500 bonus points as a sign-up bonus for creating a new account or registering a temporary card. The 1500 bonus points may take up to 30 business days to be credited to your account.

All purchases of any gift cards at Woolworths and BIG W will earn zero standard points.

If the gift card deal is for bonus Everyday Rewards points for each gift card purchased, the number of bonus points is usually specified in the deal’s terms and conditions.

• Some deals award a set number of points as a bonus (e.g. 1000 Everyday Rewards points if you purchase a $50 Ultimate Kids gift card).

• Other deals will specify the number of Everyday Rewards points you will earn for each whole dollar you spend on gift cards (e.g. 20x Everyday Rewards points on the purchase of Ultimate Kids gift cards).

If you are purchasing a gift card through a bonus points deal that also charges a gift card purchase fee (e.g. Vanilla Mastercard gift card, TCN Luxury eftpos gift card), you will not earn any bonus points on the gift card purchase fee.

All purchases of gift cards at Woolworths or BIG W will officially not count towards any other bonus points offers (e.g. Everyday Rewards points boosters). For example, if your Everyday Rewards account is targeted with a spend $120 in one transaction and earn 3000 bonus points and you spend $150 on gift cards, you are not supposed to earn 3000 bonus points from that offer.

Gift card deals at Woolworths typically have a daily purchase limit listed in the deal's terms and conditions. However, staff may impose their own restrictions.

Gift card deals at BIG W typically have a limit for the number of gift cards that will earn bonus points or a limit for the maximum number of points that will be awarded (unless otherwise stated in the deal's terms and conditions).

The “value” of Everyday Rewards points is dependent on your redemption preferences. Using 2000 Everyday Rewards points as an example, it is equivalent to:

• $10 in Everyday Rewards Dollars (which is redeemable at participating retailers), or
• 1000 Qantas points.

Everyday Rewards points are automatically converted into Everyday Rewards Dollars or Qantas points in lots of 2000.

After you scan the gift card(s) and the Everyday Rewards account and proceed to the payment screen, the checkout may take a couple of seconds before displaying the number of points that can be earned in the transaction towards the top right-hand corner of the self-service checkout screen.

However, at Woolworths, this portion of the checkout screen will not always display the number of points that can be earned, as it is sometimes used to instead display the number of bonus items you will earn for any collectables promotions (e.g. Discovery Garden, Woolworths Bricks).

There are also some occasions where the bonus points are not allocated to an Everyday Rewards account until a later time or date, as it can sometimes take up to 14 business days for bonus points to be credited to an account.

Bonus Everyday Rewards points earned on gift card purchases are usually credited to an Everyday Rewards account immediately after payment has been finalised.

However, it sometimes may take up to 14 business days for the points to be credited, and in exceptional circumstances, points will not be credited within 14 business days and the account holder will need to follow this up with Everyday Rewards.

If you did not scan your Everyday Rewards card during the transaction, you will need to contact the Everyday Rewards team for assistance.

Please note that they will only retroactively award bonus points at their discretion, so there is a chance that the Everyday Rewards team will reject your points claim.

If you notice this before the transaction is finalised, you can simply scan the correct card and any previously scanned Everyday Rewards card(s) will be removed from the transaction. Once the transaction is finalised, it is no longer possible to change the Everyday Rewards card associated to the transaction.

If you did not scan an Everyday Rewards card during the transaction and previously raised a points claim with the Everyday Rewards team, you cannot ask the Everyday Rewards team later to change the Everyday Rewards card associated with the transaction.

• If gift cards are being purchased alongside eligible items (e.g. groceries) in the same transaction and there are Everyday Rewards Dollars available for redemption, it will be possible to redeem Everyday Rewards Dollars, but only to less than or equal to the value of the eligible items.

• A regular staff member operating either standard or self-service checkouts have a dollar limit assigned to them (e.g. less than $500, $1000, $2000) for the maximum spend on gift cards they can approve in one transaction.
• Duty managers and store managers generally do not have dollar limits assigned to them, but some may enforce an arbitrary dollar limit or a gift card limit per transaction (or even per day) and direct regular staff to enforce such a limit. For example, customers may be limited to $500 worth of gift cards per person per day, or only allowed to purchase 2x gift cards per person per day.

ALDI applies a 0.5% payment surcharge for any card payments routed through the Visa or Mastercard networks. ALDI applies this regardless of whether you are purchasing a gift card, groceries, Special Buys goods, etc.

ALDI does not apply a payment surcharge for any card payments routed through the eftpos network (or for cash payments).

Whether your card payment is routed through the eftpos or Visa/Mastercard networks will depend on the type of card presented and how it is presented to the EFTPOS terminal, as outlined in the table below:

ALDI calculates the payment surcharge by multiplying the card payment amount routed through the Visa or Mastercard network by 0.005 and rounding down the result to two decimal places. For example:

• If you pay $105 for a gift card and your card payment is routed through the Visa or Mastercard network, the payment surcharge would be $0.50. The total amount charged to your card would be $105 + $0.50 = $105.50.
• If you pay $105.95 for a gift card and your card payment is routed through the Visa or Mastercard network, the payment surcharge would be $0.52975, which would be rounded down to $0.52. The total amount charged to your card would be $105.95 + $0.52 = $106.47.

ALDI checkouts will not let you purchase more than five gift cards per transaction. Whether you can purchase gift cards across multiple transactions will be at the discretion of staff.

Ultimate gift cards are prepaid eftpos or Visa gift cards that can be redeemed at a defined list of participating retailers. (NOTE: all FAQs in this Ultimate gift card section will only reference the Visa version, other than the FAQ on the different Ultimate gift card versions.)

Ultimate gift cards are issued by Blackhawk Network, and exist in both digital and physical forms.

Celebration gift cards are prepaid Visa gift cards that can be redeemed at a defined list of participating retailers.

Celebration gift cards are issued by Blackhawk Network, and exist in a physical form. Celebration gift cards are specially-branded Ultimate gift cards that are exclusively sold at Coles.

Celebration gift cards are not to be confused with Swap Celebration gift cards, which are a gift card also issued by Blackhawk Network and can only be exchanged for digital gift cards from a different list of participating retailers.

Ultimate eGift Cards (i.e. digital Ultimate gift cards) are only available as Visa gift cards.

However, there are two different versions of physical Ultimate gift cards:

• eftpos - Ultimate gift cards were originally launched as eftpos gift cards. Nearly all retailers have stopped selling the eftpos version, as it started being phased out in 2021.
• Visa - Physical Ultimate gift cards sold at retailers these days are almost always Visa gift cards.

For Ultimate eGift Cards, the expiry date can be found on the webpage containing other gift card details (e.g. card number, CVV2). (The expiry date should be three or five years from the date of issue.)

For physical Ultimate or Celebration gift cards, the expiry date may be printed on the front of the gift card or its packaging (i.e. Valid thru xx/xx). The expiry date can also be obtained from the relevant balance check website. Physical gift cards manufactured in May 2023 or earlier will have two expiry dates displayed on this website:

• Expiration date: the expiry date to use when adding the gift card to a mobile wallet, making a purchase online at a participating retailer (where permitted) or accessing the Ultimate gift card exchange portal.
• Card service expiration date: the date the gift card's balance will expire and no longer be available for purchases; this date is three years from the date of issue.

The source of truth for participating retailers is the Ultimate gift card website (as outlined by the gift card terms and conditions and a Blackhawk Network representative on OzBargain).

The packaging generally should not be used when trying to identify participating retailers, because:

• Participating retailers are typically added to or removed from at least one type of Ultimate gift card every few weeks.
• Physical Ultimate gift cards are only manufactured in batches (e.g. May 2021, June 2022, December 2022, May 2023) and take a number of months before they arrive at a retailer for sale.
• A retailer may have physical Ultimate gift cards from different batches on sale at the same time.

Any physical Ultimate gift cards manufactured from December 2022 onwards will not feature these retailers’ logos on the packaging.
• Ultimate eGift Cards originally including these participating retailers will only be redeemable at those retailers if the eGift Card was issued before 01 October 2022.

Drummond Golf is being phased out of the Ultimate gift card scheme, so:

• Physical Ultimate gift cards with the Drummond Golf logo on the packaging will continue to work at Drummond Golf, but will not be on the Ultimate gift card exchange portal.
• Ultimate eGift Cards originally including Drummond Golf will only be redeemable at Drummond Golf if the eGift Card was issued before 01 May 2023.

Some Ella Baché locations do not accept Ultimate gift cards as a payment method. Please contact your preferred salon - or call 1300 934 916 - before making a booking to confirm whether the preferred salon accepts Ultimate gift cards.

Hotels.com was removed from the Ultimate Home gift card on 05 February 2024, which means Ultimate Home gift cards are no longer accepted as a payment method.

Ultimate gift cards (and Celebration gift cards) currently cannot be redeemed on the Officeworks website if purchasing items from the Technology category. To purchase items from the Technology category, please head to an Officeworks store or call 1300 OFFICE. No other categories on the Officeworks website are affected by this issue.

Ultimate gift cards (and Celebration gift cards) also cannot be redeemed at Officeworks' self-service printing kiosks.

Pet Circle is being phased out of the Ultimate gift card scheme, so:

• Physical Ultimate Home gift cards with the Pet Circle logo on the packaging will continue to work at Pet Circle. Physical Ultimate Home gift cards manufactured from December 2023 onwards will not feature the Pet Circle logo on the packaging.
• Ultimate Home eGift Cards will only be redeemable at Pet Circle if the eGift Card was issued before 23 July 2024.

Subway outlets connected to OTR service stations are not participating in the Ultimate gift card scheme. All other Subway outlets across Australia participate in the Ultimate gift card scheme.

UFC Fight Pass is currently not part of the Ultimate gift card scheme, which means it is currently not possible to exchange an Ultimate gift card for a UFC Fight Pass gift card.

These retailers are no longer part of the Ultimate (or Celebration) gift card scheme, which means Ultimate (or Celebration) gift cards are no longer accepted as a payment method, plus these participating retailers no longer feature on the Ultimate gift card exchange portal (even if the retailer's logo appears on the packaging).

A participating retailer may offer three redemption options for using an Ultimate or Celebration gift card:

• In-store
• Online
• Exchange (aka Exchange for eGift).

The webpage for each gift card product (e.g. Baby & Mum, Home, Kids) will outline the participating retailers that accept Ultimate or Celebration gift cards in-store and/or online, as well as whether that participating retailer appears on the Ultimate or Celebration gift card exchange facility.

If a participating retailer offers in-store redemption, an Ultimate or Celebration gift card can be redeemed either by:

• Swiping the physical gift card on the EFTPOS terminal (physical gift cards only), or
• Adding the gift card to an eligible mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet) and then using the gift card stored in the mobile wallet as the payment method in-store.

To redeem an Ultimate or Celebration gift card in-store, tell the staff member at the checkout you would like to use a card. Do not mention anything about gift cards, as a participating retailer's checkout system may not be able to redeem Ultimate or Celebration gift cards if the checkout is expecting a gift card issued by the store itself. For example, if you ask a staff member at a JB Hi-Fi checkout you would like to use a gift card and you attempt to use an Ultimate gift card, the checkout will be unable to redeem the Ultimate gift card, as the checkout is expecting the staff member to scan the barcode of a JB Hi-Fi gift card.

If a participating retailer offers online redemption, the physical gift card can be redeemed either by:

• Entering the gift card's details directly into the credit/debit card section of the participating retailer's online checkout, or
• Adding the gift card to an eligible mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet) and then using the gift card stored in the mobile wallet as the payment method online (where permitted).

The expiry date used to pay for online purchases will depend on the type of Ultimate or Celebration gift card being used:

• Physical Ultimate or Celebration gift cards: the expiry date can be obtained from the balance check website.
• Ultimate eGift Cards: the expiry date is either three or five years from the date the gift card was issued.

A participating retailer will only permit to a customer to redeem one Ultimate or Celebration gift card in one transaction, as participating retailers cannot handle split payments between multiple Visa cards in one online transaction.

The Ultimate and Celebration gift card schemes also features a gift card exchange portal, where you can exchange part or all of the available balance of an Ultimate or Celebration gift card for a participating retailer's gift card. However, not all participating retailers participate in the portal.

The link to the gift card exchange portal can be found on the Ultimate and Celebration gift card websites.

JB Hi-Fi’s point-of-sale system will allow multiple Ultimate gift cards to be redeemed in one instore transaction, and there is no known limit built into the system. The OzBargain record is currently 99.

However, redeeming multiple Ultimate gift cards in a transaction will only be allowed at the discretion of the staff member operating the checkout.

Additionally, it is against JB Hi-Fi's gift card policy to use Ultimate gift cards to purchase any gift cards in their stores. It is not known whether JB Hi-Fi's instore checkout system automatically blocks you from using an Ultimate gift card as a payment method for gift cards, but a staff member may stop you.

JB Hi-Fi's website (i.e. jbhifi.com.au) will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate gift card per online transaction, as JB Hi-Fi's website cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards.

The easiest workaround is to go to the Ultimate gift card exchange facility (which can be found on the Ultimate gift card website) and exchange an Ultimate gift card for a digital JB Hi-Fi gift card. There is no known limit to the number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards that can be redeemed in one online transaction; the OzBargain record is 51.

Another workaround is to separately purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card to cover the cost of the difference between the order amount and the Ultimate gift card's available balance, then redeem the JB Hi-Fi gift card and the Ultimate gift card together.

The Good Guys’ point-of-sale system will allow multiple Ultimate gift cards to be redeemed in one instore transaction, and there is no known limit built into the system. The OzBargain record is currently 100.

However, redeeming multiple Ultimate gift cards in a transaction will only be allowed at the discretion of the staff member operating the checkout. Although The Good Guys staff usually permit multiple cards to be used in most transactions, staff may choose to not allow the redemption of multiple Ultimate gift cards or set an arbitrary limit (e.g. five per transaction), especially if a gift card (e.g. The Good Guys gift card) is being purchased in the transaction.

Ultimate gift cards can only be used for payments made through The Good Guys' point-of-sale systems. Payments for agency products (e.g. Miele dishwasher, Asko washing machine) cannot be paid directly using Ultimate gift cards, as payment for such products are made directly to the manufacturer, rather than TGG themselves. However, it may be possible for a TGG store to use a workaround to accept Ultimate gift cards as a payment method for agency products.

NOTE: this answer does not cover The Good Guys Commercial.

The Good Guys' website will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate gift card per online transaction, as The Good Guys' website cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards.

The easiest workaround is to go to the Ultimate gift card exchange portal and exchange the Ultimate gift card for a digital The Good Guys gift card. However, a maximum of two The Good Guys gift cards can be redeemed in one online transaction (and this can be in conjunction with one Ultimate gift card).

Another workaround is to separately purchase a The Good Guys gift card to cover the cost of the difference between the order amount and the Ultimate gift card’s available balance, then redeem the The Good Guys gift card and the Ultimate gift card together.

The Good Guys Commercial website will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate gift card per online transaction, as The Good Guys Commercial website cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards. It is not possible to redeem The Good Guys gift cards on The Good Guys Commercial website.

A potential workaround is to pay for the item at a physical The Good Guys store. Please read this comment for more information.

In-store

IKEA's checkout system will allow multiple Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to be redeemed in one in-store transaction. However, if you are at a self checkout, you will need staff assistance to do split payments, as a staff member will need to put the self checkout in assisted mode in order to be able to specify the amount to charge to the Ultimate or Celebration gift card. The OzBargain record is currently 24 in one transaction on 15 Oct 2023 at the Logan store.

Alternatively, an Ultimate or Celebration gift card can be exchanged for one or more digital IKEA gift cards through the exchange portal on the Ultimate or Celebration gift card website. In terms of redemption limits for IKEA gift cards at an IKEA store, there appears to be no known limit and the redemption of multiple IKEA gift cards in one transaction does not require staff assistance.

Online

IKEA's website will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate or Celebration gift card per online transaction, as the website and app cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards.

The easiest workaround is to exchange an Ultimate or Celebration gift card for one or more digital IKEA gift cards, which can be done through the exchange portal on the Ultimate or Celebration gift card website. According to the IKEA website:

• There is no limit to the number of IKEA gift cards that can be redeemed in one transaction.
• Once an IKEA gift card is redeemed, it is reserved against that shopping bag for up to four hours. If a transaction is not finalised, or any changes are made to the shopping bag or delivery instructions, the IKEA gift card's balance will be released after four hours and available for redemption again.

The OzBargain redemption record is 188 in one transaction. Having said that, there are multiple reports of the IKEA website only allowing a handful of gift cards to be redeemed in one tranasction.

Another workaround is to separately purchase an IKEA gift card to cover the cost of the difference between the order amount and the Ultimate or Celebration gift card's available balance, then redeem the IKEA gift card and the Ultimate or Celebration gift card together.

Instore

Officeworks' point-of-sale system will allow multiple Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to be redeemed in one instore transaction, and there is no known limit coded into the system. The OzBargain record is currently 50.

However, redeeming multiple Ultimate or Celebration gift cards in a transaction will only be allowed at the discretion of the staff member operating the checkout. Although Officeworks staff will almost always permit split payments across multiple cards, staff reserve the right to refuse the redemption of multiple Ultimate or Celebration gift cards for any reason whatsoever.

Additionally, it is against Officeworks' gift card policy to use Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to purchase any gift cards in their stores. Attempting to use an Ultimate or Celebration gift card to pay for a gift card instore (including via a mobile wallet) should trigger an Invalid Product Mix error on the EFTPOS terminal.

Ultimate or Celebration gift cards are also not accepted as a payment method at Officeworks' self-service printing kiosks.

Online

Officeworks' website will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate or Celebration gift card per online transaction, as Officeworks’ website cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards.

A workaround is to separately purchase an Officeworks gift card (or a Coles Group & Myer gift card) to cover the cost of the difference between the order amount and the Ultimate gift card’s available balance, then redeem the Officeworks gift card (or Coles Group & Myer gift card) and the Ultimate or Celebration gift card together. However, the Officeworks website will only allow the redemption of 1x Officeworks gift card (or 1x Coles Group & Myer gift card) in one online transaction.

Having said that, there is currently an issue with the Officeworks website where an Ultimate or Celebration gift card will be declined if purchasing items from the Technology category.

Additionally, it is against Officeworks' gift card policy to use Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to purchase any gift cards sold by them, so it is likely any attempts to use an Ultimate or Celebration gift card in this situation will be unsuccessful.

Over the phone at 1300 OFFICE

A user associated with Officeworks confirmed Officeworks' sales team will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate or Celebration gift card per transaction over the phone, as that team cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards.

Additionally, it is against Officeworks' gift card policy to use Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to purchase any gift cards sold by them, so it is likely any attempts to use Ultimate or Celebration gift cards in this situation will be unsuccessful.

Instore

It depends on whether the participating retailer has placed any limits on the number of cards from a financial institution (e.g. eftpos, Visa, Mastercard) can be used in one transaction. For example:

• BCF has a redemption limit of 5 cards per transaction.
• It is not known whether EB Games has a redemption limit. The OzBargain record is at least 20.
• 99 Bikes appears to have no redemption limit in a single transaction. The OzBargain record is 53.

Online

Only one Ultimate or Celebration gift card can be redeemed in one online transaction.

Ultimate and Celebration gift cards operate on the Visa network, and participating retailers that accept these gift cards on their online stores can only accept one Ultimate or Celebration gift card in one online transaction. These gift cards can be redeemed online either through a mobile wallet (if it accepted online by the participating retailer) or by directly entering the card details in the debit/credit card section of the online checkout.

To get around this issue, you may be able to convert your Ultimate or Celebration gift card into a retailer-specific gift card (where possible) through:

• The Ultimate gift card exchange facility or Celebration gift card exchange facility.
• Purchasing a gift card on the participating retailer's website. (This only works for retailers that sell their gift card on their own website and allow Ultimate or Celebration gift cards to be used as a payment method for purchases of gift cards. Some retailers sell their gift cards through a third-party retailer, which makes this route impossible.)
• Visiting a physical store of a participating retailer and purchasing a gift card in-person.

Some participating retailers officially do not allow you to use Ultimate (or TCN) gift cards to purchase their own gift cards (whether in-store or online). However, it is almost always up to staff (in a physical store) or online systems to enforce this restriction.

Please also note that some participating retailers place restrictions on the usage of their own gift cards. For example:

• The Good Guys Commercial does not allow any The Good Guys gift cards to be redeemed on the The Good Guys Commercial online store.
• T2 only allows a maximum of one T2 gift card to be redeemed in one online transaction.
• New Balance does not sell New Balance gift cards in Australia.

TCN gift cards are prepaid eftpos or Mastercard gift cards that can be redeemed at a defined list of participating retailers.

TCN gift cards are issued by Vii on behalf of The Card Network (TCN), and exist in both digital (Mastercard) and physical (eftpos) forms.

There are three different versions of TCN gift cards:

• Multi-choice gift cards, which can be redeemed at a specified list of participating retailers.
• Experience gift cards, which can be redeemed at merchants using specific Merchant Category Codes (MCCs).
• eftpos gift cards, which can be redeemed at any merchants that choose to accept prepaid eftpos gift cards.

The participating retailers are correct as at 30 May 2025. Please refer to the individual gift card pages for the most up-to-date list of participating retailers.

It depends on whether the TCN gift card website states that the TCN gift card you have can be redeemed at that participating retailer.

The gift card packaging should not be used when trying to understand where a TCN gift card can be redeemed. Participating retailers are typically added to or removed from at least one type of TCN gift card every few weeks. However, physical TCN gift cards are only manufactured in batches and can take a number of months before they arrive at a retailer for sale, so the participating retailers printed on the gift card packaging may be out of date by the time the gift cards arrive at a retailer.

TCN gift cards' terms and conditions also makes it very clear that the full and updated list of participating retailers is on the TCN website.

NOTE: This section is only in relation to the TCN gift cards that can only be redeemed at a list of participating retailers (e.g. HER, HIM, TEEN).

A physical TCN gift card can be redeemed in two ways:

• In-store (by swiping the gift card on the EFTPOS terminal), or
• Exchange (which is called online by TCN), where you can exchange part or all of the available balance of a TCN gift card for a participating retailer's digital gift card. This digital gift card can be redeemed in-store and/or online at the participating retailer (dependent on the retailer’s gift card’s terms and conditions).

For participating retailers that accept TCN gift cards in-store, a TCN gift card can be redeemed by swiping the physical TCN gift card on the EFTPOS terminal.

To redeem a TCN gift card in-store, tell the staff member at the checkout you would like to use a card. Do not mention anything about gift cards, as a participating retailer's checkout system may not be able to redeem TCN gift cards if the checkout is expecting a gift card issued by the store itself. For example, if you ask a staff member at a JB Hi-Fi checkout you would like to use a gift card and you attempt to use a TCN gift card, the checkout will be unable to redeem the TCN gift card, as the checkout is expecting the staff member to scan the barcode a JB Hi-Fi gift card.

A participating retailer may permit a customer to redeem multiple TCN gift cards in one transaction. However, this is at the discretion of the individual participating retailer, as some participating retailers may not be set up to allow the redemption of multiple Mastercard or eftpos cards in one transaction. Examples of participating retailers that will permit multiple Ultimate gift cards to be redeemed in one transaction include JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys.

A participating retailer may also place restrictions on the usage of an TCN gift card. For example, JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys officially do not permit customers to use TCN gift cards as a payment method for JB Hi-Fi gift cards or The Good Guys gift cards (respectively). However, it is up to staff to enforce this policy, as there is nothing in the JB Hi-Fi checkout system that would automatically block anyone from using TCN gift cards to purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards.

The TCN gift card scheme also features a gift card exchange portal, where you can exchange part or all of the available balance of a TCN gift card for a participating retailer's digital gift card.

However, not all participating retailers participate in the portal. The webpage for the TCN gift card will show a list of retailers that participate in the gift card exchange portal.

The exchange portal can be accessed through the TCN gift card website by following these steps:

• Go to the webpage for the TCN gift card you have
• Once the webpage finishes loading, scroll down to section showing participating retailer logos
• Click/tap on the logo for the relevant participating retailer
• If the redemption options are Instore and Online, click/tap on Online.
• Read the information regarding the participating retailer's digital gift card, then click/tap on Proceed
• Follow the subsequent steps to have the digital gift card emailed to you.

If the website refuses to process the exchange request, try registering the gift card first. The link for registering the gift card can be found on the individual gift card webpages.

NOTE: physical TCN experience gift cards refer to TCN Cinema, Pamper, Pub & Bar and Restaurant gift cards.

• Go to https://choice.gift/.
• Scroll down the homepage until you see the section titled Pay safer and faster using your mobile wallet.
• Click/tap on Go Digital.
• Enter your details and the gift card's details, then click/tap on Submit.
• Open the link sent via SMS. If you have not already downloaded the TCN app, you will be prompted to do this.

Physical TCN gift cards are eftpos gift cards, so they cannot be directly used for any online transactions at any participating retailer.

TCN operates a digital gift card exchange facility, where you can exchange part or all of the available balance of a TCN gift card for a digital gift card for some participating retailers. However, the retailers that participate in this facility will change from time to time and without prior notice. For instructions for accessing the exchange facility, please refer to a different FAQ.

The cardholder should check whether a participating retailer has any restrictions on how their digital gift card can be used for online transactions (e.g. can the digital gift card be redeemed online, how many digital gift cards can be redeemed in one transaction). For example:

• JB Hi-Fi currently allows an unlimited number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards to be redeemed in one online transaction, but JB Hi-Fi's gift card policy states you cannot use a JB Hi-Fi gift card to purchase any gift cards.

Special gift cards are available in two types:

• Brand cards: gift cards that only work at specific merchants (e.g. Woolworths, BWS, JB Hi-Fi). A brand card does not operate the same way as a gift card issued by the brand themselves. For example, a Woolworths Special gift card is not the same as a Woolworths Supermarket gift card issued by Woolworths Group.

• Category cards: gift cards that only work at specific merchant categories (e.g. Aussie Explorer, Tech Head, Style Setter).

It depends on the type of Special gift card.

Brand cards can only be redeemed at the merchant specified on the gift card. For example:

• A Woolworths Special gift card can only be redeemed in-store at Woolworths Supermarkets and Woolworths Metro, as well as Woolworths Online. It cannot be redeemed at any other type of Woolworths store, including the Woolworths Group gift card portal.

• A BWS Special gift card can only be redeemed in-store at BWS, as well as BWS' website and app. It cannot be redeemed at any other bottle shop, including Dan Murphy's and Liquorland.

• A JB Hi-Fi Special gift card can only be redeemed in-store at JB Hi-Fi, as well as JB Hi-Fi's website (jbhifi.com.au).

Category cards can only be redeemed at specific merchant categories, rather than specific merchants.

Special is not transparent about the merchant category codes (MCCs) permitted on each gift card, but Special mentions Featured Retailers on the webpage for each category card. Some of these MCCs can be inferred by matching a Featured Retailer with its MCC. For example:

• The Aussie Explorer gift card lists 7-Eleven, BP, Caltex and Shell as Featured Retailers, which strongly implies that MCC 5541 (Service Stations) is a permitted MCC on this gift card. That means the gift card should work at other merchants using MCC 5541, including Shell Reddy Express, Ampol Foodary, EG Ampol and United.

• The Tech Head gift card lists Apple, JB Hi-Fi, Sony and Bing Lee as Featured Retailers, which strongly implies that MCC 5732 (Electronic Stores) is a permitted MCC on this gift card. That means the gift card should work at other merchants using MCC 5732, including Samsung's website and the Google Store.

Having said that, a category card will only be accepted at the discretion of the merchant. For example:

• A merchant can request Special gift cards to block them as a merchant. However, Special is not transparent about the merchants that have requested this.

• A merchant requiring a payment card used on their website to support 3-D Secure will reject Special gift cards, because all prepaid gift cards are unable to support 3-D Secure.

A Special gift card can only be used in-store if it is stored on Apple Pay or Google Wallet as a payment card. When in-store at the merchant, make sure to ask to pay via Mastercard, then tap and pay from the smart device storing the Special gift card. If the amount owed is greater than the available balance on the Special gift card, request the merchant to do split payments (although this will only be allowed at the discretion of the merchant).

A Special gift card can be redeemed online either by directly inputting the gift card's details into the online checkout, or by paying using Apple Pay or Google Wallet (where supported). If the amount owed is greater than the available balance on the Special gift card, the transaction will be declined unless the merchant offers a way to split payments to reduce the amount payable using the Special gift card. For example, on The Good Guys' website, if the amount owed is $249 and a $100 The Good Guys Special gift card is to be used, the only way this will work is by first redeeming at least $149 from one or two The Good Guys gift cards, then charging the remaining amount owed to the The Good Guys Special gift card.

The balance can be checked by:

• Logging into the Special account on the Special website and viewing the gift card, or

• Checking the balance on the Special app and viewing the gift card.

Australian Apple Gift Card can be used to purchase products, accessories and services at the following locations:

• Version 1 is the original version that was sold at various brick & mortar retailers (e.g. Coles, Woolworths, BIG W) starting in mid-2021. This version has the activation barcode printed on the back of the packaging.

• Version 2 is a newer version that was sold in various brick & mortar retailers (e.g. Coles, Woolworths, BIG W) starting in February 2025. This version has a pull tab covering the activation barcode.

There have been numerous reports of this version being tampered with, and tampering has been in two different forms:

1. Someone takes an unactivated Apple gift card from a retailer, carefully opens up the packaging, swaps the sheet containing the gift card code with a sheet containing an already-redeemed gift card code, then seals up the packaging again and returns the gift card to the store to be purchased by another person. If you then purchase that tampered gift card, you are in effect activating a gift card that someone else has, rather than the gift card actually inside the packaging. The reason this is able to happen is that the gift card activation barcode is not printed on the same physical item as the gift card code, which increases the risk of tampering.
2. Someone takes an unactivated Apple gift card from a retailer, carefully opens up the packaging, takes out the sheet containing the gift card code, records the gift card code, removes one or more characters from the gift card code and replaces them with random characters, then seals up the packaging again and returns the gift card to the store to be purchased by another person.

The recommendation - where possible - is to open up the gift card packaging before purchase and to check the gift card sheet for signs of tampering. (Please keep in mind some store staff will not let you open the gift card packaging prior to purchase.)

• The gift card serial number on the packaging must match the gift card serial number on the sheet inside the gift card. (Please refer to this image from FreePoints.com.au for more information.)
• Check for signs that the gift card code has been altered. For example, the printing for the gift card code is usually raised in respect to the gift card sheet. Any alterations to the gift card code may see replacement characters included with a pen or a marker, which would mean that part of the code is no longer raised.

If you only realise after purchase that your Apple gift card has been tampered with, you can contact the customer service team for the retailer (e.g. Coles In-Store Customer Care, Woolworths Customer Service). Alternatively, you can contact Apple directly for assistance.

There have been reports of this version being tampered with. Before purchase, the recommendation is to check the following:

• After ripping off the tab covering the activation barcode, check if there is a sticker or sheet of paper covering the activation barcode. If there is, this is an indication the gift card has been tampered with or opened previously.
• Remove the Apple gift card from the packaging and remove the grey material over the redemption code (found on the front of the gift card) to see whether it has been tampered with. (Please keep in mind some store staff will not let you open the gift card packaging prior to purchase.)

If you only realise after purchase that your Apple gift card has been tampered with, you can contact the customer service team for the retailer (e.g. Coles In-Store Customer Care, Woolworths Customer Service). Alternatively, you can contact Apple directly for assistance.

AmpolCash gift cards are non-reloadable gift cards issued by Ampol.

AmpolCash gift cards are available in two forms:

• Physical: available for purchase at Ampol Foodary service stations.
• Digital: available for purchase through a number of third-party sellers (e.g. Prezzee, ShopBack, Reward Gateway).

Prezzee stocks two types of AmpolCash Digital gift cards:

• AmpolCash: a gift card that can be used to pay for fuel and eligible products sold in the convenience store (e.g. food, drinks).
• AmpolCash Fuel Only: a gift card that can only be used to pay for fuel.

AmpolCash physical gift cards are redeemable at all Ampol service stations listed on the Ampol store locator (where EFTPOS facilities are operational and online).

Please note that AmpolCash physical gift cards can only be redeemed at automated fuel dispensers (aka pay-at-the-pump machines, which are typically found at unattended service stations) if the gift card has been set up with a PIN.

AmpolCash Digital gift cards are only accepted at Ampol Foodary, EG Ampol and other participating Ampol service stations. Please refer to the Ampol store locator for a full list of service stations accepting AmpolCash Digital.

The physical gift card is required to redeem funds from it. It is currently not possible to add a physical gift card to Apple Wallet or the WalletPasses Android app.

If paying in-store:

• Tell the attendant that you would like to use a card as a payment method. (If split payments is required, tell the attendant the amount to redeem from your gift card.)
• Swipe the gift card on the EFTPOS terminal.
• If prompted for a PIN, press Enter without entering any numbers (even if a PIN is set on the gift card).

If paying at an automated fuel dispenser, follow the instructions for redeeming an AmpolCard (which should be outlined at the payment terminal). Please note:

• An AmpolCash physical gift card can only be redeemed at an automated fuel dispenser if a PIN is set on the gift card. The PIN must be provided when prompted by the payment terminal.
• The maximum amount that can be redeemed from an AmpolCash physical gift card is its available balance. For example, if the available balance of an AmpolCash physical gift card is $69, the maximum amount of fuel that will be dispensed will be $69.
• Only one AmpolCash physical gift card can be redeemed in one transaction.

When paying in-store at a participating Ampol:

• Tell the attendant that you would like to use an AmpolCash Digital gift card as a payment method. (If split payments is required, tell the attendant the amount to redeem from your gift card.)
• Present the gift card's QR code to be scanned. If the attendant or EFTPOS terminal instead asks for a 10-digit gift card number, provide the 10-digit number. If the gift card number is longer than 10 digits (i.e. it starts with 707678), provide the digits after 707678.
• If prompted for a PIN, press Enter without entering any numbers (even if a PIN is set on the gift card).

If purchasing an AmpolCash physical gift card from an Ampol Foodary, the easiest method is to set up a PIN at the time of purchase. To do this, when prompted to swipe the AmpolCash gift card to activate it, swipe the gift card on the EFTPOS terminal and a PIN prompt screen will appear on the EFTPOS terminal screen. At this point, you can enter in a four-digit PIN of your choice and then press Enter.

If the AmpolCash gift card has already been purchased, a PIN can be set up by contacting the AmpolCash gift card team. To do this, send an email to ampolcash@ampol.com.au with the gift card number on the front of the card and a copy of the gift card proof of purchase and request PIN verification to be enabled on the gift card.

AmpolCash Digital gift cards cannot have a PIN set up on it after it has been purchased.

Traditional Bunnings gift cards issued in Australia can only be redeemed in-store at Australian Bunnings stores.

Reducing balance Bunnings gift cards issued in Australia can be redeem in-store at Australian Bunnings stores, as well as online at the Bunnings website (including on the Bunnings Marketplace).

All Bunnings gift cards cannot be used as a security deposit for any hire shop equipment.

For traditional Bunnings gift cards, it must be surrendered to the checkout operator upon redemption.

• For physical gift cards, hand over the gift card to the checkout operator (who will need to scan the barcode on the back of the gift card).
• For digital gift cards, present the PDF with the two barcodes for the checkout operator to scan.

If change is owed, the checkout operator will provide a physical reducing balance Bunnings gift card for the amount owed.

eftpos gift cards (including physical TCN eftpos gift card, Westfield eftpos gift card and the Perfect eftpos gift card) are associated with a four-digit PIN at the time it was sold and activated, and this is printed on the back of the card.

PIN verification

To verify a transaction using a PIN:

NOTE: merchants using Square EFTPOS terminals are unable to accept eftpos cards via a magstripe, because Square blocks such payments.

A Visa or Mastercard prepaid gift card can be redeemed at an online merchant accepting Visa or Mastercard, as long as the online merchant permits the use of prepaid gift cards.

Prepaid gift cards are not tied to a specific person, so they cannot support security features that allow a payment processor to ask for verification when you attempt to complete a purchase online (e.g. 3D Secure). A number of merchants do not accept cards without 3-D Secure support, and other merchants will block some prepaid gift cards (or even prepaid cards) based on the bank identification number (BIN).

The workarounds for this are to:

• Link a prepaid gift card to a PayPal account, then use PayPal at an online merchant (where accepted) and select the linked prepaid gift card as the payment source.
• Add a prepaid gift card to a supported mobile wallet (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Wallet), then use that mobile wallet at an online merchant (where accepted) and select the prepaid gift card as the payment source.

An eftpos gift card cannot be redeemed online.

Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards are more susceptible to unauthorised transactions than a regular Visa / Mastercard debit or credit card, due to a number of reasons:

• Issuers of Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards usually do not employ the sophisticated fraud detection algorithms typically seen on Visa / Mastercard debit or credit cards.
• Prepaid gift cards are usually created with a limited range of potential card numbers and expiry dates.
• Some online merchants do not require a CVN (card verification number) to be provided in order to attempt a payment.
• The absence of 3-D Secure or similar features means that the merchant cannot ask the card issuer to verify that the registered cardholder is the one who is attempting the transaction.

The recommendation is to redeem Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards as quickly as possible to reduce the likelihood of being impacted by unauthorised transactions. Although most issuers of Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards permit a cardholder to dispute transactions, the process for disputing transactions can be lengthy and require supporting documentation (including the original purchase receipt for the prepaid gift card, as well as personal ID). There are also time limits for disputing transactions, which are set by Visa / Mastercard themselves.

eftpos gift cards are not as susceptible to unauthorised transactions, because unauthorised transactions are almost always online transactions.

For eftpos gift cards, yes.

For Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift cards, not always.

Some merchants operating in specific merchant categories (e.g. hairdressers, restaurants, hotels, rental car places) may request a pre-authorisation amount that is up to 120% of the original transaction amount. However, when the transaction is no longer pending, the amount deducted from the Visa / Mastercard prepaid gift card will be settled at the transaction amount, and any additional funds set aside to cover the pre-authorisation amount will be returned the available balance.

This means you may not be able to redeem a prepaid gift card at some merchants, even though you think it has a sufficient available balance. For example, if a hairdresser wants to charge you $30 and you use a prepaid gift card as a payment method, the pre-authorisation charge may be $36. The difference between the pre-authorisation charge and the final transaction amount is returned to the available balance once the transaction has been settled.

For card-present transactions, the gift card's PIN is usually not required, as Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method (CDCVM) allows the cardholder to authorise the use of the gift card using an authentication method supported on the mobile wallet (e.g. passcode, Face ID, Touch ID). However, a PIN is required if an EFTPOS terminal does not support CDCVM for the transaction being processed.

It will depend on two factors:

1. The MCC assigned to the eatery.

An eatery can be assigned one of a number of different MCCs, depending on the nature of the business. For example, it could be assigned one of the following MCCs (and this is not an exhaustive list):

• MCC 5462: Bakeries
• MCC 5811: Caterers
• MCC 5812: Eating Places, Restaurants
• MCC 5813: Bars, Cocktail Lounges, Discotheques, Nightclubs, and Taverns: Drinking Places (Alcoholic Beverages)
• MCC 5814: Fast Food Restaurants
• MCC 5921: Package Stores, Beer, Wine, and Liquor
• MCC 7011: Lodging: Hotels, Motels, Resorts: not elsewhere classified
• MCC 7996: Amusement Parks, Carnivals, Circuses, Fortune Tellers
• MCC 7997: Clubs: Country Clubs, Membership (Athletic, Recreation, Sports), Private Golf Courses

A MCC is supposed to describe the nature of the business conducted by the eatery, but nuances in definitions of each MCC and how a payment provider handles them can mean that seemingly similar businesses can be assigned different MCCs. For example, Grill'd has been reported to use MCC 5812, whereas Betty's Burgers has been reported to use MCC 5814 (even though both of these are burger restaurants).

Please refer to the table in the FAQ above to see the MCCs officially (and unofficially) supported on a particular restaurant-related gift card (where applicable).

2. Whether the eatery chooses to accept your restaurant-related gift card as a payment method.

Assuming the eatery you go to uses a MCC permitted on the gift card, you can only use this gift card at restaurants or eateries that choose to accept the gift card as a payment method. Generally speaking, there should be no issues, but there are some considerations, including:

• For physical restaurant-related gift cards where the gift card must be swiped in order to redeem it (e.g. physical TCN Restaurant gift card), it will depend on whether the EFTPOS terminal accepts swipe payments. For example, some EFTPOS terminals (e.g. Zeller Terminal 2) cannot accept swipe payments, due to them not having a magstripe reader. Additionally, some Square EFTPOS terminals (e.g. Square Terminal) have magstripe readers, but will not process payments on the eftpos network if the gift card was swiped, due to Square choosing to only process payments on the eftpos network where the card was tapped or inserted.

• If ordering online via a QR code at an eatery table, some websites will reject restaurant-related gift cards if you input its details directly into the debit/credit card section of the checkout, because these gift cards are unable to support 3-D Secure and are therefore a “less secure” payment method to accept as a merchant. A workaround is to use the gift card via Apple Pay or Google Pay at the online checkout (where supported). Additionally, eftpos-only restaurant-related gift cards (e.g. physical TCN Restaurant gift cards) cannot be used for ordering online, due to those gift cards not supporting online transactions.

• If paying in-person and the staff member notices a restaurant-related gift card is being used a payment method (e.g. because the staff member is asked whether the gift card is accepted, such as in this situation), staff reserve the right to reject the gift card as a payment method (whether it is out of caution, confusion, etc). To avoid this situation, the recommendation is to avoid asking staff whether they accept a particular gift card and simply ask to pay by card.

The digital and physical versions of gift cards owned by TCN are usually issued by different companies, which means it is possible for the same brand of gift card to have two different lists of permitted MCCs.

7-Eleven digital gift cards currently can be redeemed at any merchant using one of the following MCCs (subject to individual merchant acceptance):

• 5499: Miscellaneous Food Stores – Convenience Stores and Specialty Markets
• 5541: Service Stations (With or without Ancillary Services)

However, Blackhawk Network (the gift card issuer and operator) can change where 7-Eleven digital gift cards work at any time without any prior notice. For example, Blackhawk Network may at any time:

• Add or remove permitted MCCs, or
• Block all online transactions, or
• Restrict its redemption to 7-Eleven only.

Please keep this in mind if you are intending to use 7-Eleven digital gift cards at merchants other than 7-Eleven.

In terms of acceptance at specific service stations:

Shell eGift Cards can only be redeemed at participating Shell service stations (including all Shell Coles Express and Shell Reddy Express service stations). A full list of Shell-branded service stations accepting Shell eGift Cards can be found on the Shell fuel finder under the Gift Cards - eGift Card filter.

In terms of where the Shell eGift Card has been used:

No.

• The Woolworths Group gift card website will not process any payments from a Visa card that does not support 3-D Secure if you enter the card's details into the credit card section of the online checkout. Prepaid Visa gift cards (including ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift cards) are unable to support 3-D Secure, and will therefore be rejected.

• Even if you were able to use a Visa card with no 3-D Secure support, the next issue is that the Woolworths Group gift card website should actually use MCC 5399 (Miscellaneous General Merchandise). That MCC is not officially permitted on the ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card, and therefore the card issuer should reject any transactions from merchants using MCC 5399. The Woolworths Group gift card portal previously used MCC 5411, but that changed around October 2023.

• ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift cards do not support PayPal, which means the PayPal payment method on the Woolworths Group gift card website cannot be utilised.

EG Ampol has placed restrictions on the usage of the following types of gift cards:

• Activ Visa gift cards and its various cousins (including Category Choice Fuel gift cards, 7-Eleven digital gift cards and Cashrewards Fuel & Auto gift cards).

Swiping/tapping one of these when purchasing a gift card may trigger a Cancelled - Items Not Allowed error on the EFTPOS terminal. Please refer to the table below for more information.

NOTE: the table is only intended to list payment cards that have been reported to be blocked by EG Ampol when purchasing at least one type of gift card. Any payment cards not in the list above are not known to be a payment method restricted by EG Ampol and therefore do not appear in the table below.

Generally speaking, a Westfield eftpos gift card can be redeemed at a merchant that accepts eftpos, as long as the merchant chooses to accept physical prepaid eftpos gift cards as a payment method. This includes merchants outside of a Westfield shopping centre.

Merchants that do not accept Westfield eftpos gift cards include:

• Australia Post outlets. Westfield blocked transactions at Australia Post in early 2024.

• Officeworks. As soon as you swipe a Westfield eftpos gift card on the EFTPOS terminal, an error message (Declined - Card Not Accepted) will appear on the EFTPOS terminal, and Officeworks staff will have no way to get around this restriction.

• Woolworths (selected purchases only). Woolworths will accept Westfield eftpos gift cards as a payment method unless specific gift cards are being purchased in the transaction. Please refer to this FAQ for more information.

• Merchants using Square EFTPOS terminals. Square will not process any payments on the eftpos network if a payment card was physically swiped on the EFTPOS terminal.

• Merchants using an EFTPOS terminal that does not have a magstripe reader. This includes Zeller Terminal 2 and CommBank Smart Mini.

A Westfield digital gift card can be redeemed at a merchant that accepts Apple Pay and Google Pay, as long as the merchant chooses to accept prepaid Visa gift cards as a payment method. This includes merchants outside of a Westfield shopping centre.

This section details expiry periods for popular gift cards issued by various retailers and financial institutions.

Broadly speaking, gift cards are required to have a minimum 3 year expiry date, but there are some exceptions.

The table below also covers the likelihood of extending the gift card expiry beyond the original expiry date (based on previous OzBargainers' experience). A gift card issuer may re-extend the expiry of a gift card after the original expiry date, but if this happens, it will be a goodwill gesture, as there is generally nothing legally requiring a gift card issuer to do this.
