Haven't looked at SSDs for quite a few years, but isn't this quite expensive? Is it because of the heatsink or is this some sort of high performance NVMe drive?

PCI 5.0, double the speed of 4.0. They benchmark up around 10-13GB/s instead of maxing out the PCI lane at just under 8GB/s (typically maxing at around 7.4GB/s). Essentially it's double the performance of 4.0 drives from Samsung, making use of the 16GB/s PCI 5.0 lane.

1TB usually costs just over $200 for PCI 5.0, even no name brands, for context. For a branded Samsung 9100P this is extremely cheap, though PCI 5.0 is a little overkill.

Edit: Other brands have got cheaper, ie $173 now with code @ Centrecom https://www.centrecom.com.au/biwin-black-opal-x570-pro-1tb-p…

The Samsung is more consistent performance though AFAIK and better with random reads/writes, plus the heatsink will be valuable.

I would say the Samsung is going to be better supported, having said that - I jumped on a 2TB Biwin as the price was to good (around $260). Seems like they have been an OEM for other brands like Acer, HP, etc. and now are branching out with their own products as well.

        • Yes Biwin 4tb M300 for 249 Working a treat!
These 9100 are for a niche market, since you cant fit one into a laptop with heatsink 8.1mm total height (unlike 990 Pro 4tb which is single sided and works a treat without heatsink in 2 laptops as storage drives
And would you be able to see any real difference in speed between 5x4 and 4x4?

        • Yeah for a brand I haven't heard of they actually perform quite well, I have the 1TB one linked above.

It's more going to be the warranty experience and drive life I'm concerned about, but we'll see how it pans out.

      • TBH…

For gamers PCI 5.0 > 4.0 means absolutely zero real world performance gain

The heatsink would also only matter in select cases on select motherboards… and having said that…if you are the person who will actually utilise the 5.0 speeds one could only presume you will get a board that supports it

Those boards 'usually' comes with an included heatsink for the 'primary' slot that I would argue could/would be beefier than the stock brand provided one

So a integrated heatsink IMHO is only relevant in 'Third' drive configuration where the supplied board heatsink may be shared with multiple slots if at all. As if it was only a second drive the shared heatsink is still 'usually' larger than stock.

Then is there even boards that support full PCIE on secondary drives thats not some absurd amount?

        • There's no reason unless you're copying insanely large files. But, even then there's a reason hard drives haven't died yet.

          • @SarcasticEmu: More so a mix of file sizes is where there's actually a performance boost, you can see 3-4x the speed in some benchmarks then. IE program / game installations.

Should also boot quicker, but as is NVMe boot times is like 10-15s anyway.

Large files is (seq write) is under x2 speed.

            • @Dyl: In practical terms, even transferring the full capacity of these drives only saves you a few minutes , and that’s something most people do once in a blue moon, if ever.

For most users, you’ll get more real-world benefit from opting for a higher-capacity 990 than chasing the extra speed of a PCIe 5.0 model.

            • +2

@Dyl: there is no boot increase from gen3 to gen 4 drive..let alone to gen5

              Win11 boots on a samsung 970 evo with a 9800x3d at 11.2secs

              and 10.7 on a KC3000..

PCI gen 5 for NVME for the consumer is beyond useless it's just marekting

        • Realistically not much real world performance difference yeah. I wouldn't say zero, because the random read/writes and small file writes are much faster too, but still minimal.

Benchmarks do show games install quicker, but compared to the download time I doubt the couple minutes difference is overly noticeable

Not all boards include heat sinks and often they're quite crappy. That said, a lot of the boards with PCI 5.0 m.2 are likely not budget and include heatsinks, so fair point.

he miniforum's itx board I have has 2x 5.0 x4 slots, along with a full PCI x16 lane, if that's what you mean? So yes there's definitely boards that have 2 (or more) PCI 5.0 x4 m.2 slots. There's also 5.0 x16 to 4 M.2x4 cards on the market

          • @Dyl: I never said there wasnt boards out there, i said they were for an absurd amount.

Im not familiar with miniforum itx boards but i found a listing for the BD790I X3D for $879.99 with 2x 5.0 m.2 slots yes…but also shows what seems like a chunky heatsink with a fan.

which basically just highlights my points

            • @warclone: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/minisforum-bd790i This board specifically, not to be confused with the 795 or the SE variant which don't have 5.0 lanes

If it was available without heatsink would include that too but it's not on sale sadly. I would assume it's removable, hopefully without voiding warranty

Edit: nope, voids warranty… That sucks.

https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/1123042265… $284 + 9.95 del before CB for 1TB no heatsink, so slightly more..
              https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/1123042267… $411 + 9.95 del for 2TB, also slightly more.

              • @Dyl: yes….and thats specifically the board I mentioned so…

im still not seeing a point you are making about how a m2 5.0 drive WITH a heatsink is a value add rather than a detractor to a 'majority' of users

going to neg this 'deal' as i feel the price isnt great for what it is, people shouldnt get suckered in to buying this

                • @warclone: I'm not making that argument, I'm saying it's cheaper, hence posting it?

It's around $30+ cheaper for 1TB and the majority of boards have crappy heatsinks, the one I have just happens to have a very decent one.

      • I see! Thanks for the context :)

        • Welcome! But yeah, essentially it's overkill for people that want to show off a bit and have windows and games load in seconds lol

  • +2

    4tb 990 Pro for $519 - $150 is decent value for $369:
    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/1124033397…

    • Was about to post, this seems like a good deal. Annoyingly it's the heatsink version which won't fit in my Ms01

  • +1

I don't care if it's double the speed. Over $100 per TB is stupid.

  • Terrible price since you can get Fanxiang 4TB for just $250.

    • PCI 5.0 is the difference

Not everyone’s cup of tea and it is a bit overkill, but best price for a branded 5.0 drive

    • I paid WD hdd 4tb $4xx few years ago and win11 really doesn't like it, it took long time to load your imported videos from your phone and images as well.

If you have 100 videos recorded on your phone, copy is fast at 80mb/s. But previews took really long time to load with hdd.

Any cheap 4tb ssd will do the job lol
