AMD Ryzen 9 7900x for $480 AUD

Hi guys,

Just wanna know if AMD Ryzen 9 7900X for $480 AUD is a good buy? for mainly 90% productivity and some gaming?

Much appriciated!

  • It's probably overkill and you'd likely be just as well of buying those 7700 that sell for around $200 including cashback (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/921623)

But if you are happy with the 7900x then it's a good price for $480.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago (snagged it for $445).

Haven't really put it through its paces yet, but my thinking was that I could run it at 105W (instead of the standard 170W) with very little performance hit - lots of information about 'eco mode' in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/xp5yj5/eco_mode_is_ver…

    And some more here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PcBuild/comments/16ztzzs/how_much_d…

I put a fairly modest cooler on it, the Thermalright Assassin Spirit 120 Vision White ARGB, and didn't get any kind of scary numbers on the one Cinebench R23 run I did.

There are a few warnings against using Ryzen Master to lower the TDP, and to make changes via the BIOS instead, like https://overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_mainboard/dont_use_ryzen… and https://www.reddit.com/r/AMDHelp/comments/1bdfo6b/psa_never_…

Now that I've (almost) gotten to the bottom of why all of ARGB lights stopped working (thanks Gigabyte for your crappy software…) I can close the case up and start getting to know my new system. I reckon they're pretty good value for money despite being a bit long-in-the-tooth - but that's a good excuse for a future upgrade! :D

    • Imagine my suprise when I enabled PBO recently on my 5900x and the package power rise to 180w on cinebench. 😂
