So basically you can split your payment in 4 almost everywhere! (as soon as they accept cards)

why don't I just use cards?

    • +32

Why not keep kicking the can down the road?

      • +1

        Why don’t we?

    • +11

Its card inceptions, you use a card inside a card. So its pay in 8 🤯

Credit card -> Step pay -> Afterpay

      • +49

For $19.99pm I'm starting this payment platform called BeforePay, where you pay for an item in full before you get something. I think it will revolutionise the industry, real game changer.

        • +4

No way! I just… give money to somebody and then they provide a good and/or service, with no middle man? Count me in!

        • +2

There actually a Beforepay which is a Payday Loan provider.

          Beforepay/ Afterpay Combo D:

        • Is the $19.99 post-pay or pre-pay?

        • +1

          That is…something

          Way better than NowPay

        • +2

Fun fact, Up Bank did exactly this… but no upsell lol https://australianfintech.com.au/up-launches-maybuy-a-saving…

        • You're insane. That will never catch on.

      • How do you pay your step pay using credit card. They only allow bank accounts.

      • WAIT, WAIT, WAIT WAIT. BUT THEN YOU CAN PUT THE SAME CREDIT CARD AS THE AFTERPAY PAYMENT METHOD AND TURN IT INTO A COMPLETE DEBT OUROBOROUS????

    • pay in 4, no interest unless default.

  • +2

Does Afterpay allow you to bpay line Zippay?

    • +2

      Nope (didn't neg)

    • +1

You can, but you need to combine it with another app called Sniip

      • What’s the snip fee for AP card?

        • +1

          1.5% like the other visa/mastercards.

  • +33

Everything has a plus or pro subscription now, $9.95 a month might seem to be little but when you add it to all the other subscriptions it gets ridiculous.

    • +13

      $9.95

      already too much…

    • +2

Every other credit card for kmart mum shoppers is free, and that's all this is..

    • +5

      Enshitification

    • I actually think they should be required ro email a receipt. I had some weird charge for over a year from Amazon for 9.99 per month. I now i should check my credit card statement.

  • -2

No banner for existing AP+ users :(

    • +35

      Hahaha imagine paying for AP+

      • -5

lol… am I missing something? Was AP+ an abbreviation for something else? I meant Afterpay plus, and I do pay for it because its super useful from a cashflow perspective for our specific situation. I have a few K approval on it so we chuck monthly recurring big spends on there and then pay it off over 4. With our repayment history we often don't need to pay anything at point of purchase so essentially get another 2 weeks out of it.

        • isnt $4k the max limit?

        • +4

Why is this useful though ?

You could just pay for the stuff… ?

          • +1

@Nom: Theoretically, if you invest that money, you could earn a return instead of using it to buy the item. But this doesn’t really hold true with BNPL systems, since they only give you up to 6 weeks and require repayments every 2 weeks. In practice, that works out to about 3 weeks on average.

        • @ccrap Your cost of money for that 2 weeks is approximately 6-7% p.a. That is only if you have the maximum of $4000 limit and you are using that maximum consistently.

        • Or you could just get a fee free credit card instead and not pay a recurring subscription fee?

    • how do you make the fee worth it ?

  • Do they have international transaction fee?

    • -1

Revolut doesn’t have fees if you are interested 😊

      • +2

Surprisingly NAB Now Pay Later too doesn’t have transaction fees for purchases in other currencies!

      • +2

        Revolut

You need to preload money on that right?
I'm more interested in leaving money in my offset as long as possible.
I have been using the Humm card from this offer, it allows me to pay off the transaction after 3 months.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/899867

        • Same. I'm thinking about increasing my credit limit on Humm since it's so easy to live off of it.

Back when churning was less scrutinized I would be chasing points, now I'm just chasing offset and interest free days.

That said Humm occasionally does promotions for spending.

    • Bendigo Ready credit card doesnt have international transaction fee. I have never seen any websites that are not Australian offer AfterPay. Pretty sure this service (AfterPay plus) offers Tap&Go capability, not for online payment.

  • +19

whats the benefits of being a plus member compared to just a normal account? no ads? unlimited skipping of payments?

    • +6

Only certain stores accept the base Afterpay. This upgrades it to function like the zippay digital card which also works wherever credit cards/google pay/apple wallets are accepted.

      • +2

ahh ok cool, yeah i love my zip account as i can use a one off card number, i use it for my cruises when i have to give them a credit card, as its already once been charged the account cant be charged again and gets rejected but the card number is still valid and hasnt expired. its prefect for that kind of cr@p

        • +2

I recently opened a Bankwest debit card which has the same functionality (but have yet to try it). I used to have a zip account however due to their credit check - I was asked about it during my home loan application. The application itself was fine, but still, I figured as I rarely used zip, it wasn’t worth keeping if it meant being asked about it (and taken into account) when going for the home loan (and any future applications).

I did miss the one off credit card number zip offered, but now Bankwest is the answer (for me at least).

          • @eltito: yeah im thinking of closing my afterpay account and using my zero balance NAB card that has nothing in the account for this.

        • +1

Any idea if this can impact your credit rating? Like if they do a dodgy charge after the fact and your one-time card rejects the charge, do they then report this as a failure to pay your dues?

  • +4

I have been using an afterpay card in my e-wallet for years now. How is this subscription service any different?

    • +4

Correct me if Im wrong as I don't use Afterpay as much. Is it where places which don't accept afterpay?

      • +1

        Looks like that's the case

        • It can come in handy. Like once I had to split my mechanical bill for my car as I was a bit short. Luckily, they did take afterpay, but I can see where this would come in handy. But also dangerous for some users who would treat it like a credit card.

    • +5

This subscription lets you use afterpay to pay basically anywhere (as long as the place accepts Apple or google pay) such as Costco , Apple etc

    • +2

With the base Afterpay, the store needs to accept Afterpay.

With Afterpay Plus, you can use Afterpay anywhere a Visa or Mastercard is accepted. Basically turning it into Zip or a credit card (without the credit check I guess?).

      • @Kontiki Thanks, this makes sense

  • +2

And plenty of banks offer it in their accounts these days too.

    • what do you mean ?

      • +1

Plenty of banks have a pay in four function within their regular account (credit check usually required) or credit card offering. Some offer fortnightly and some monthly payments.

  • Why not just use Zip? There’s no monthly fee, and the Zip card can be used everywhere.

    • Zip does have a monthly fee if your balance is above $0

      • Plus a some places charge % extra to use zip as well. Like Virgin. They didn't and now they do. I can always pay up front but used zip when it started - because I could now don't bother with extra 1.27% pfft

      • +1

The account fee is waived if you have paid your statement balance by the due date.

    • Zip has been $10 a month for me

Edit: Zip Money, slightly different I believe

    • +2

zip has credit check but afterpay does not

    • Zip only has a $1k limit cap these days. Afterpay is up to $3k (and they've apparently gone up to $5k recently in the US).

      • +1

Sorry, they love me more than you - I have $4K.

        • Dude I have $8K so Zip love me than you. It not really a brag. I think some card holder with ultra platinum card are much better.

          • @ChickenAdobo: No brag, just a fact with a sprinkling of joke.
You have 8K with Zip Pay?
I only have 1K, didn't know you could get more without going to Money.
Edit: Oh, just saw Plus. Is that new?
Edit²: Just saw Alley Cat's post below.

            • +1

@McFly: Yeah it a recent addition since March I think. You can apply for it but need to go through their financial check to get approval. It called Zip Plus and I use this inconjuction with my 4k Afterpay.

      • +1

You can apply for zip plus for $8k.

        • But zip plus doesn't let you make repayments with credit cards unlike the normal base version.

  • +20

$10 a month for a credit card which only exists for people who want to believe that their short term credit facility isn't a credit card.

Please launch me into the sun

    • Unbelievable the lack of financial literacy these days.
Signing up for services like this is outrageously dumb but that's who these companies prey on.

    • +3

Meh that might be the case but for credit card churners like myself it lets you space out expenses while you're still waiting for exclusion cooldowns to run down etc. Didn't use to be the necessary when there were a wealth of cards to choose from and CoL hadn't been (profanity) by inflation but it's the opposite situation nowadays.

Then again maybe banks will eventually add BNPL repayments into the ineligible category for points/minimum spend lol.

    • Please launch me into the sun

I don't think a wet sandwich impacting the sun - even a footlong at relativistic speed - would have much effect.

    • +1

What do you mean, you use your credit card to make the repayments and start a vicious loop

  • +5

A $10/mth for a subscription service, aimed at people likely already less than financially secure enough to have a credit card, providing short term financing with high default/penalty fees for late payment.

at what point do we run out of pennies to squeeze :)

    • When we have a social revolution. Viva la France!

  • +1

Do we know whether you can use other credit cards to pay down amounts owed on your Afterpay card? It might be useful for those churning cards (you can make sure you divvy up the spend between months).

    • +1

CC is the only way to pay your AP debt.

      • +1

Correct, but no Amex (otherwise this will get abused)

      • lol I got a neg. If there is any other way to pay AP go ahead and let us know…

        • +2

          probably a debit card

          • -1

@askbargain: They allow debit cards? OK.
Still, the point is that of course you can use a CC to pay AP.

        • +1

Not my neg - but given this is now a credit card, I had thought they might require more traditional repayment methods (Bpay etc).

  • BNPL bubble is about to pop.

    • Not even close

    • +3

      Bubble Now Pop Later?

    • It’s debt all the way down.
If there’s one thing I can (somewhat) respect Wall Street and finance bros for, it’s repackaging and reinventing debt.

  • They want to charge to put you more in debt?

  • -1

Everything that's wrong with a credit card combined with everything that's wrong with BNPL. People voting for this should be handing in their ozbargain badges.

    • +1

This is 3 months free. Anyone not voting for this should be handing in their OzB badge.

      • how can we get the most out it during that ?

        • Put anything you would put on the credit card on AP+ (making sure you pay it off on schedule of course.)

  • +4

Nice, I'll be able to afford the 50 cent Translink commute now

  • +2

They need to let ppl pay with amex so we can use afterpay to bypass stores that don't take amex

  • +2

So this basically acts as a CC and does not require the merchant to accept AP?

I think if you need to split inexpensive, day-to-day items in 4, you have bigger problems.

    • +1

I doubt most need to. But day to day expenses add up over time and if you can offset them hitting your account for a period of time that means you could have that money collecting extra interest, sitting in your offset etc. Might not be a huge amount but it still means you'll be slightly better off.
