I'm not sure if this is considered a hack, but it is something I have been doing for a while. It only applies to Woolworths (not Coles) and only for online orders.

Woolworths has an unadvertised rule for weight-based items (that are not pre-packaged in a tray). The rule is, they have to give you more than what you pay for.

For example, if you buy 100g of ham and one slice of ham is 75g, then they have to give you two slices, which would be 150g and you'll only pay for 100g.

This deal works better with sliced meat, as opposed to shaved meat, because each slice weighs more.

Say if I want 300g of ham and I'm not fussy about which type. Instead of buying 300g of ham, I'd buy 100g of one type of ham and 100g of another type of ham. I usually end up with around 300g of ham and only paying for 200g.

Note: This also works with other weight based items that are not prepackaged where you have to purchase by weight, e.g. in 100g lots. The amount of saving depends on how chunky the item is

        Yeah fair play

No matter how you slice it - you can't beat meat

    • +2

i beat my meat all the time

  • so if i order 100g of ribeye steak and their smallest piece is about 250g, i get 250g?

    • +1

The problem with rib eye steak is that it is prepackaged and this post does not apply to prepackaged products

For prepackaged items, you pay the max amount by weight and get a refund for the difference

So I'm confused, just buy 100 grams for any sliced product and get the rounding error? But I end up with two slices of everything in the plastic bag and a paper wrap?

    • It depends on how much sliced product you wanted in the first place

If you only wanted 150g, order 100g and you’ll get 150g

This trick works better for those who want small quantities

hmm we could also get free ketchup at mc donalds, then go to kfc who charge you for ketchup, i used to joke that i charge things at work to save money, it was actually because i forgot to charge them at home. but like most people, it’s not about saving money , sometimes it’s the thrill of the hunt and solving a puzzle, like will coupons stack. It’s not do we need the bargain, we just want a bargain.

Any Ozbargainer that buys their cold meats from Coles or Woolies needs to hand in their OzBargain badge. Even with this hack, it is way cheaper to buy your sliced ham from your local deli. My local often has double smoked or champagne ham for $11/kg.

    • depends if your cole’s or woolies only has prepacked or still has a deli counter, some don’t have deli counter and all meats are prepacked and expensive …

This works well for salmon if you order 340g. Used to do it all the time before the toxic salmon outbreak.

Also works well for whole barramundi if you order 800g you can sometimes get lucky and get two whole fish weighing around 1.1-1.3kg

Remember to put these exact amounts via the website as the app rounds them

The Hack posts have been really peak recently

  • I love this post, for numerous reasons.

Did someone report this for spam as a pun?

  • +2

picking up my order in an hour, will report back on the weights.

  • What's the minimum order, OP? Could I do 20 orders of 10g of streaky bacon and end up with 20 slices for 200g worth in cost?

  • They have the minimum weights listed you can order on the website/app when you do your shopping. I ordered 100g of ham off the bone this week and received boneless leg ham instead, and the weight was exactly 100g. I didn't bother complaining as I get my weekly shop online and delivered and I've complained before when they've given me the wrong item or missing items.

  • That's not something new. My facourite game during covid is ordering 50-100g of each deli or meat or fruit (and I only order discounted item). When they arrived, i check them one by one with the receipts with my pen and write down how much I "earn" each item. If there is anything that is less than what I ordered, I will email them and will get refund= free items. So much fun!

    Ingham's Chicken Sliced Roll 100g 164g 64g $1.60 $1.02

    • +2

that's not the product you ordered! I expect that's grounds for a refund!

      • yes, I got refunded for both

      • +1

I opened them up today and they were sliced. They just selected the wrong product.

    • +1

      Was it worth it?

  • Unfortunately for those of us who like their mortadella shaved almost transparent-thin this isn't much help!

Here we are, actual deal. Ozbargain is meant for this kind of stuff not monitors that are still $1000 after a 33% discount.
