Just FYI these have a reputation of poor durability compared to the XM4 and XM6. The hinges on the ears breaking is a common problem.
How come ?
The hinges on the ears breaking is a common problem.
They already said
IDK who downvoted you but you are on the spot - The Sony Subreddit is flooded with posts complaining of the broken hinges.
The fact the hinges were redesigned on the very next model XM6 speaks volumes about the durability of the XM5's.
There are also complaints of the hinges on the XM6's breaking (still pretty new, so time will tell). Sony can't seem to make a solid pair of headphone anymore, which is sad because they sound, comfort, battery, ANC etc is amazing
@Froot Loops: Really hope the XM6's aren't prone to hinge failure, I really want a model eventually I can trade up to from my XM4's :-)
@shutuptakemymoney101: I'm in the same boat. Hopefully it's just a manufacturing flaw with them being so new.
Edit: Checked reddit again and there are another 2 posts in the last 12hrs with broken hinges on the XM6's. Seems to be a design flaw (at the weakest point). Looks like quite a few users are returning theirs due to the fear. People seem to be suggesting to go with the Bose QC Ultra (I might check these out myself as I refuse to buy another set of XM5's (On my 4th now)).
@fredblogs: The snapping issues isn't warrantable (Sony classes it as wear and tear). I had one replaced under warranty (they fried themselves) and 2 chucked due to hinges and the current ones have started crackling and the touch panel has failed.
From personal experience I have never encountered such issue, I have 2 pairs, my gym/active pair are treated like absolute shit and still holding up strong 3 years later.
Second pair for the office I feel like are still new even though 1-2 years old.
My pet peeve with my black paid is having to clean them, which i gave up on a while ago. The black on these attracts fingerprints like crazy and it’s really visible.
That said there may be a a few runs from a different supplier that aren’t holding up as well.
Might be head size? Do you have an average to small head? Could be the big head people having hinge issues
Yeah that might be it, extended use time with a larger head.
@TWISTYY: i just broke my cancer council sunglasses, barely wore them - i think when i put them on top of my head i stretched them out. so maybe there is something to it
I'm still using a pair that I got on launch day, in mid 2022 and it's perfect. Pretty impressive considering it's averaged probably around 4-5 hours use, each day, since I use it for work and online gaming.
I got the WH-1000XM6 and on phone calls, Teams meetings and online gaming, people frequently said they couldn't hear me clearly (sounded muffled or like I was far away etc). Someone posted a reddit thread on this issue. I just returned them to JB Hifi and they offered a full refund.
It's a running joke now that there's a bot running on the sub to detect new XM5 hinge issues. At this stage, there are new cases almost on a daily basis.
Mine had issues within two months of purchase and was super disappointing enough for me to stay away from the XM6 given the designs are very similar.
The XM4 and previous models were basically bulletproof. I know someone still using their XM1's lmao
I dunno why they can't keep the same form factor as XM3/4
I’m still using my XM3 without issue and my wife is still using my XM2 also without issue!
So that’s why so many of these are on Fb
Personally, Sennheiser Momentum 4 shit on these and a fraction of the cost
Not the ANC, way behind. Sound quality is a bit better.
They most definitely do not shit on the XM5’s lol.
I have both and confirm while the clarity on the SM4 is slightly better my ears prefer the sound of the XM5’s.
The XM5’s are still in its own league when it comes to ANC, SM4’s do not even compare.
Battery life I have to say lasts twice as long on my SM4’s. I can go for about a month with charging them.
I have no idea what you mean that they are a fraction of the price 😂 sitting at right about the same with a further 10% welcome code brining them down to $341.
I have both and this is not true. Sony is great with Noise cancelling, call quality and True Bass feature.
I agree unless ANC is your utmost priority.
Momentum 4 significantly better battery life, appears way more durable and the sound quality is a lot better once you pair it with Poweramp EQ apps (EQ within the Smart Control app doesn't do it justice).
Also available for around $300 via Amazon Buisness.
Yeah ANC wasn’t my priority, music quality is what mattered and with Wireless headphones these are by far the best I’ve found, way over the Sony. ANC makes me vomit due to the choking effect it has.
Further 10% off with Sony sign up - $341.1

This or Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones? Can anyone advise? Thanks
Most important feature is ANC to minimise audibility of female vocals and acoustic guitar from other end of the house. Will there be a notable difference between these and XM6?
GL with that. I've not found anything that filters voices
can get Sennheiser momentum 4 via eBay with eBay plus discount for around $272 at the moment. I rate them higher than Sony for sound quality.
$333 @ amazon business
Good price
Dunno if they fixed it but the material on the ear pads/cushions cause allergic reactions that cause itchiness and flaking around the ear where they make contact even for wearing it in short intervals (5-20 minutes for me). I thought it was just me but it was a bit common issue for others as well. Warnings about it posted on the Sony site as well.
Available over here on Amazon too
