Phone Prices Are Crazy in China

Motorola Edge 60s 5g, dimensity 7400 12g 256g, is only 1060 cny, or around 227 aud. The catch is Chinese version come with Chinese ROM and dual sim slot, no esim, and probably other minor differences.

    ok maybe start Chinabargain

    • Definitely worth bargaining if traveling to China. I would buy tablets, cables, tech accessories, etc.

Isn't it true with anything, especially tech things? Hence, the trade barrier and so-called security issues.

    • Not all tech things, i5-14400F is 999 cny or 215 aud, not cheaper. But mostly true.

Okay, the Teches that are still predominantly held in USA won't be cheap.

    • +1

      Not really.
I was in China and Hong Kong looking for PC parts. My friend took me through their tech markets and it was considerably cheaper to get in Australia when on sale.

I'm talking ASUS, Kingston, Samsung, Intel, MSI, gigabyte brands. The Chinese brands were similar prices to Australia

"The catch is Chinese version come with Chinese ROM…"

Can it be overwritten with something else is it hard wired at the hardware level?

    • +1

Some CN models can be overwriten with global ROM, however this particular model edge 60s (dimensity 7400) is China only. It's global version edge 60 fusion (dimensity 7300) has different hardware spec.

It's global version edge 60 fusion (dimensity 7300) has different hardware spec.

So that explains the difference in price….

        • The Dimensity 7400 is almost identical to the Dimensity 7300, with only a slightly increased CPU frequency. If anything, the 7300 should be cheaper. This doesn't explain the price difference.

    • Chinese ROM does have google service though, so no problem with gmail/map/other google apps. But I believe all Chinese ROM with google service lack android auto.

Then warranty issues when/if need to fix things.

Buy cheap OS == headaches later on.

    • Yeah I am not suggesting buying a phone in China and use it here, but still, this price is even cheaper than a second hand.

Who travels to the CCP run China if not Chinese

I've had a great holiday in China.
I don't support the current leaders of China, USA, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand and a slew of other places, but they are all countries I have enjoyed visiting.

People who can’t stand Bali and would rather walk the Great Wall than get drunk in Kuta and come home with a dodgy tattoo.

      • stop reading news.com.au lol

    Not just phone.

Their properties / housing are cheap ass outside of mega cities.

Their EV is cheap as chips too.

Fast food + delivery also cheap.

    Everything cheap with competition involution.

    • +3

      And wages!

    • +1

That's what happens when competition is encouraged. It drives prices down and somewhat better for the end consumer.

Australia is sadly monopolised by Coles and Woolworths. Cost of living is THROUGH THE ROOF. Same with Property. Same with my own hobby stores G00D G@MES. Because they own all the local stores, everything is priced super high!

The sad reality of this country.

No esim? No problemo with estk.me

This is a EUICC function on a SIM card that enables any non esim phone to work with any esim plans.

The way it works, is you install esim on to the EUICC SIM card instead of the mobile phone. It's also super convenient I can switch phones by just moving the estk.me SIM without reinstalling esim plans. No need for any app to work once esim is installed on the SIM card. Awesome!

  • You sure that wasn’t a counterfeit with dodgy specs? I haven’t been to China for a few years, but back then the (genuine brand) electronics were not cheap, there were much better deals on Ozbargain.

    • Just observed that now the prices of Android phones and tablets in China are quite crazy.

  • no google play = no aust bank apps.

    • They do support Google play, Gapps and bank apps are not an issue. The main problems are no esim, potential 4G/5G issue, no Android Auto

    • They normally do have google play services, which is what you need for the banking apps. They just don't have the play store, but you can easily remedy that by side loading it.

  • Used to be fine to use import phones in Australia, but now there is no guarantee they won't get blacklisted by Telstra/Optus/Vodafone. See https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-03/brand-new-phones-unab…. Not worth it.

Also the uncertainty with apps that require a secure environment is also a concern. I always recommend to get a Australia delivered phone now, even though grey imports are cheaper, the hassle is just not worth it.

    • Newer phones are likely to work with either of the three carriers. I have a very old CN Redmi phone that stoped working with Vodafone, but my friend have a CN version Xiaomi 14 he still daily uses. But yes this is another potential issue along with no esim and no warranty.
