Which router do you currently have?

    • huawei hg659

      • The Huawei HG659 router has a practical limit of about 16 devices per band, or around 32 devices total

You need to get a new one that allows more devices.

  • can you move devices to wired, instead of wifi?

    • not really wifi camera around the house.

  • AI says

The Huawei HG659 router typically supports a maximum of 32 devices on each Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), for a combined maximum of 64 devices theoretically. However, users often find the router struggles and may experience issues with fewer devices, with some sources suggesting a practical limit closer to 16 devices per band before performance degrades.

Try splitting your devices between 2.4GHz and 5 GHz, to less than 16 on each. Note, 2.4GHz has slower wifi speed, but signal carries further, and older budget devices may only support 2.4GHz. Ie Any devices that only support 2.4 must go on 2.4.

    • it seems to be only allowing 10 devices at a time. hence the issues.

  • Does your existing router have sentimental value? Because it is old and slow and replacing it will likely solve all your problems.
Even a $20 Facebook marketplace ex-bigpond router is likely to perform better.
When you say "struggling" do you mean you have many, many devices (more than, say, 30) and some can't get a connection, or that when multiple devices are connected they all go slow?

    • all of the above issues. can you recommned a decent model? I am not cluey on specs to look for. Would the ex-bigpond be locked to a provider?

      • Literally any modern router (look for wifi 6 or even wifi 7) would be better.. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/wireless-router?noexpired=1
What NBN/internet provider are you with?

        • Aussie Broadband atm.

          Mercusys MR90X AX6000 Wi-Fi 6 Dual-Band Router vs Tenda RE3L BE3600 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 7 Router

we currently have the exisiting router in our nbn box. would the mr90x need to look like a spider in order to work?

          • @godofpizza: There are routers that don't look like spiders. Do you have nbn FTTP, HFC, FTTC or Fixed Wireless?

            • @Twix: honestly no idea. i believe its supplied by oppticom if that helps.

              • @godofpizza: To confirm, enter your location here. Does it say Opticomm Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)?

                • @Twix: Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) it says.

                  • @godofpizza: Does it say nbn or OptiComm FTTP?

                    • @Twix: OptiComm FTTP

                      • @godofpizza: I would purchase a Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra or Cloud Gateway Max and put that in the enclosure. Use an Ubiquiti PoE injector or PoE switch and mount a Ubiquiti wireless access point on the ceiling somewhere in the home.

A router with Wi-Fi in the enclosure is not recommended.

@Twix: thanks, if i go with a Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra/ Ubiquiti wireless access point would that be ok if it's mounted to a ceiling on an first floor and still be recommended?

                          • +1

@godofpizza: Yeah that's good. You may have to put another access point if there is a second floor.

@Twix: thanks for your insight Twix. are the units your mentioned hard to setup?

                              • @godofpizza: Watch some YouTube Ubiquiti Unifi setup guides. Maybe hire a local IT guy if you need more help.

You may find the eero 7 Pro or eero 7 easier to setup. The eero router can purchased @ Aussie BB.

@Twix: thanks, i'll have a look at the videos before purchasing it.

                        • @Twix: Not sure I would go the Ubiquiti route (basing off OP’s level of expertise judging by their replies)

                          • @87percent: Fair point. I will suggest an alternative.

  • telstra gen 3 on fbmp for $20-50

    • not locked to telstra?

can I use it as a 4G router for optus/vodafone?

  • hoping there is some sort of add on available wihtout having to trashing the existing router (possible?)

There is, but it's not worth it. Most things you can buy these days are wireless routers in themselves, and the router bit you're better off with the newer and faster one anyway.

What size space are you looking at and what's your ideal budget? You generally get what you pay for, but for a large space mesh is worth looking at. For a small space and if you're willing to spend a few dollars, this is excellent - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/922083. On more of a budget - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16860056/redir. Or wait for a TP-Link AX55 to go on sale (it's currently $150, has been as low as $100 before).

    • the exisiting one we have fit nicely on our nbn enclousre. so the i suppose you can't fold the spider legs on this model right to fit Mercusys MR90X AX6000 Wi-Fi 6 ?
