scratches, marks, worn paint, small chips and dents, faded keys, battery 50% minimum or bios lock

There is definitely no cure for these!

faded keys, battery 50% minimum or bios lock

    Yeah nah

    • For this model the issues are mainly with battery or cosmetic. Our free returns within 30 days allows you to send it back even if you just don't like it

  • +1

    Budget $90 for a genuine Dell battery…

    • I wouldn't bother. These don't have good battery life when new.

50% is plenty to get between home and office in sleep mode.
If you need to use for hours on battery, its not the best choice.

Working not Usable 😂 what a joke

  • +3

If each unit had itemised what issues they had, a customer could choose the laptop that meets their needs.

Yes, there would be price variances based on issues the laptop has.

As it stands it is a luck of the draw as to what you're getting.

    • +1

There isn’t really a good way to sell these with issues itemised. Listing every fault for each unit would make the process overly complex and inconsistent. We do offer a 30-day change of mind return guarantee, so if the laptop you receive doesn’t suit your needs, you can return it for a refund.

      • Yeah, but given the state of some of these, who wants to take that gamble and stuff around returning a laptop?

      • This is both a good thing and a bad thing.

        It's good that you've got 30 days change-of-mind returns. That's a winning move.

It's bad that you're apparently using us as your testers with it. BIOS lock, screen quality/working, Windows you can reinstall (or at least log into), working keyboard and touchpad. Quick tests and most pertinent things from our perspective.

We don't need /every/ fault (it's 2nd hand - there are risks) but the easy stuff should already be done.

      • You can return it for a refund. But the refund isn't guaranteed?

"Refunds are issued once the item has been inspected and approved."

        • The inspection step is simply to prevent situations where an empty box or a different item is sent back. Refunds are always issued once the correct item is received and inspected.

Wtf bios lock. Isn't it bricked then?

    • +2

Probably just means the bios settings are behind a password. Which makes it almost useless but probably still boots into whatever OS is on the drive

      • how do you reinstall the os, if it is corrupted ?

  • +3

"or bios lock", so can't update the BIOS or perhaps reinstall the OS, etc… Legit resellers, recyclers can get system shipped back to original owners to have BIOS passwords removed…

    Wasn't there a recent deal 20% less?

Those were not only cheaper but in way better condition. I got one in excellent condition and with 89% battery health.

  • +6

The chance of BIOS lock kills this. Hard.

  • What's wrong with this model? I saw there was big amount refurbished in Ozbargin - and the comment is very bad - battery not good and many of them have cosmetic problem

    • Dell cheaped out, black plastic case painted silver etc so it chips scrapes easily & looks poorly

    • Depends on what you get, sometimes you luck out.

I bought the ACT $319 one, it was like new, checked the BIOS system logs, it was bought new, imaged, put into storage for 1.5 years, then resold to me.

    • +1

Mine from ACT is A+ cosmetic condition - but the seller had done a dodgy swap of the RAM and SSD for inferior no-name ones, and stripped all the screws while at it.

      • Weird, mine came with a single 16GB stick, leaving the 2nd slot empty, no SSD change.

If it's not too late, check in the Bios System log.

You need to acknowledge that it was opened by ACT or the log will rollover.

My Bios log went back from new, even if you remove the back cover, it's logged there.

        • I doubt it was done by ACT.

          • @bargaino: My log went
            Newly Imaged
            Put into storage
            Booted back up, assumed wiped
Couple of months later, close to shipping, back cover removed
            Then shipped to me

So it wasn't the original owner that removed the back cover.

End of the day, nothing was swapped out on mine and it works for what I need it to do.

The BIOS System Logs is a good way to tell these types of things 😉

            • @Tom2458: Thanks! I'll check.

            • @Tom2458: Did you get a nvme SSD?

              • @High: Yes, BC711 SK Hynix

Mine even came with a 4G modem too, but my data sim lives in my mobile phone 😢

Chill guys, there are methods to unlock bios online if you do a bit of research and if all fail they offer free return.

    • later than 8~9th gen is comparably harder to find those method, or else have to pay someone for it

  • I'd feel a lot more confident if the store replied to some of the comments here. I feel as though their lack of comments has done more harm than good.

  • About as bad as the ACT units @Calmago

  • +1

Can reset bios , if you get the touch version has glass screen so no scratches … Need a laptop for grand parents but will it looks nice enough so they don't dis-inherit me.

    • -2

These touchscreen versions don't have glass screens. These being in fair/ B Grade condition will have scratches, we do have options in very good or excellent, if you were looking for something in better condition
