Not really - Australia > Vancouver > San Francisco, and then have to book a flight back to Canada makes it a very roundabout way of not actually saving any money, and then having to deal with the US entry system.
Not really because it would only be one-way with your return leg forfeited due to skiplagging. Might also get questions if you ever book with AC in the future.

I would advise against booking a place to stay near the business district of San Francisco because it is adjacent to the tenderloin region (crime ridden, lots of homelessness).

Do not use Flight Network, Gotogate, or MyTrip. They are all owned by the same parent company, Etraveli Group, and are known for being dishonest with customers, particularly when it comes to refunds. They are all part of the same scam.
