VoWiFi & VoLTE Carriers (While Overseas)

Does anyone know of a carrier that supports both overseas? I bought a vodafone sim recently and its geoblocked by ip & tower. So i can't use my sim to call unless i buy a roaming pack.

Is this the same for all optus? What about telstra and others that use telstra network?

From what I've read of other forum posts, Telstra and it's virtual network operators are the only ones that allow you make calls via VoWIFI while overseas without a roaming pack.

However someone here noted that Boost said " not supporting wifi calling from overseas back to Australia." so I guess the terms may change at anytime.

  • Have a Boost sim. While in Indonesia last month, had to turn off wifi to call (had roaming pack activated), otherwise I received the message - "WiFi calling is not supported outside of Australia."

  • I travelled to the Philippines last year and I used WiFi calling all the time. I am with Telstra directly, had no issues.

    Just my 2 cents.

I have heard that you can get around it by using a VPN on your phone back to an AU server. Cannot confirm though.

    • You mean you have international roaming activated and use wifi calling while in Phillippines?

        Yes I did.

    • Doesn't work with Vodafone, i used a router with vpn. I was able to enable vowifi this way but it still directs to a phone requesting topup.

From what i understand the carrier also gets which tower your connected to.

  • any Telstra-based services have vowifi access overseas.

    • It does seem that way, Telstra might be the better option.

  • You could use a voip service apps on your phone to use when roaming if it takes 2 sims is better.
Someone will call me on my AU sim, I see caller ID and call back using Betamax with local sims data or wifi.
Call cost is 4 cents USD connection plus .01 cent a minute to AU mobiles.
If I need to ring landlines I use crazytel 10 cents AUD an untimed call.
Use Aldi mobile and don't auto renew when you fly out of the country saving $20+ a month you can use on the voip calls.

    • To late for crazytel, they geoblock, ill have a look at others though.

Crazytel you can also port your sim so you can send/receive but with vowifi/volte you should not need to.
