I notice people ask this a lot, what is benefit of paying the ATO with this as opposed to using EFT or Bpay?
Credit card points. Esp if you’re using an Amex to buy the gift cards
as it is a debit prepaid card and ATO got rid of surcharge on debit card you make a payment / prepaid to your tax account
effectively if you have a rewards program you earn points on your credit card and you are also able to make a payment to the ATO for your tax debts without a surcharge
yep points and no fees
Certain payments are also eligible to earn interest (IEP) when made more than 14 days before they are due (interest is taxable).
Example: income tax is eligible, PAYG is not.
Interest rate for FY26 is 3.78%, scroll down to see calculation.
(Brought this up in case you are weighing between money in the bank to earn interest or spend for reward points.)
GST/ATO refund scam? Anonymous payment method not linked to identity?
Higher point rewards. Some cards don't even give points payment to ATO. Lower surcharge. Your be charged the debit card rate instead of credit card.
And of course you get negged for asking a question here
Whenever there's an unjust neg just put it down to negger has a neurological condition that causes uncontrollable clicking on minus symbols.
Would like to know this too
Verified just now. Still works for ATO payments
Is that via Optus pay (or something) or is there an ATO's own portal?
ATO portal via mygov
it worked last month for me
Transaction failed, please contact customer service.
Same old, just a different day
same here, called both website and bank, they all said not their issue. lol
Which payment card are you trying to use?
I used AMEX and bought 10 of these. Worked fine!
Feel like the days of 10% off are well and truely gone :(
Seems the “no purchase fee” and “x Flybuy points” for in store purchases is enough incentive for most.
Yeah, 20x points on Vanilla prepaid debit cards also have not been seen.
yep, missing the good old days :(
Yep 10% is gone from variable load cards :( Never to come back sadly
I think its their way to incorporated inflation. Similar to reward points losing value.
I bet the video below would also apply to these type of cards:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBarXDL23hs&pp=ygUQd29vbGllc…
Probably stop betting since that's for physical cards
Are they gonna guess the card number too? lol
Watch it last night as well
absolutely no correlation at all - different card, different provider!
safari with amex worked for 10x, but when I tried to put in another order immediately after failed.
Will try again in a few hours
but when I tried to put in another order immediately after failed.
Yes that's correct and to be expected
Why buy this if no discount, and so much risk
DEFT / ATO payment but still get CC points. Using the cards on the spot.
I could be wrong but I thought these don't work for DEFT payments anymore?
Oh really? If that's the case then it's a good thing my payment failed! Where did you hear this?
@azrof: yes you can, but I got one DEFT account being blocked due to too many "prepaid" card transactions
however, you can just pay DEFT without login, and you can do as many as transactions with different cardsI just used 10 coles prepaid mastercards this morning to pay DEFT (without login), all went through
@FatTofu: many property managers and strata use DEFT to collect fees, and the only way to pay these using cards is via DEFT (Zip doesn't accept DEFT biller code for bpay otherwise its a good option)
Deft is working
Prepaid Visa no longer works, Mastercard still okay.
Remember don’t login to your deft account, otherwise they will block you
To Access goods (or services) I don't want showing up in my credit card transaction history ;-)
This is a very good reason
Please elaborate heh
OF subscription for example
My deft bill isn't gonna wait till there is a discount
Yes! I previously bought a few… And then one was hacked… Ie used.
Took months to get reimbursed.
Since that incident have not bought any more. How can it be hacked, when you are receiving the Email with the code, etc. ?
wait 10%
hasn't happen in ages
has that ship sailed we wonder?
This is the first no-fee on Giftcards.com.au since approximately February. I've gone through two ATO pre-pay cycles hoping it would come up again, but it hasn't. This deal used to come every 6-8 weeks or so like clockwork. Now it's taken 6-7 months since the last one.
Those days are well and truly gone.
It is possible when RBA's cash rate drops to 2%.
Does Coles/Woolworth have similar offers often? i.e. on Prepaid Visa/Mastercard giftcards.
not lately, coles/woolworths has stopped 10x rewards points offer for variable loads ($20-500) Vanilla Visa / Mastercard since 2025
only max $100 value ones have rewards points bonus, but has a $5.95 card activation fee
so they becomes bad dealsyou can see all the "bad offers" since 2025 here (scroll to bottom): https://gcdb.com.au/gc/vanilla-visa/
Coles was 2 weeks ago..
$10 of flybuys points but $5.95 fee, or $7 for the $250.
yea that was the only good ones in recent months (apart from the Qantas marketplace 3x points)
but mostly sold out after day 1 of promo@littlesoldier: Approx 250 of each card denomination left over around here .,.. they used to sell out.
I saw it as a good thing as less people are talking them up (bring back the 10%).
Thank you.
I actually didn't ask correctly, I meant buying cards from coles/ww without paying the activation fee. I believe there have been some offers in past where one has to pay only the card value.
Here we go again….
No fee to turn $100 that can be used anywhere into $100 that can be used in one shop.
Cool story bro.
You won't get it bro
its great way to earn AMEX credit card points
You can use these anywhere but cool story. Leave them for the rest of us.
Oh yeah fair play, I jumped the gun there.
Still, it's sad that people think this is a deal when there should never a transaction fee on something like this in the first place.
saving money is a deal - so if you can buy these with amex, then pay somewhere like ATO with no surcharge, you've saved money! (plus earnt some credit points too)
Let's say you have to pay the ATO 30K a year in PAYG and taxes after filing. You can pay them directly via BPay, sure. But if you were to pay that 30K with these cards and use an AMEX (say one that gives 1.25 Velocity points/$), that would give you 37.5K Velocity points. That's worth something for sure. Can sell that on here for $450-$500 (risky though), or use them for flights.
Plus if you time it right, you can get a months interest as well on some of that 30K.
If you don't get this, there's no sense explaining it to you any further, and you can go on thinking that we're all crazy doing this.
@bk1973: It's fine, I get it.
Sometimes I wish we had ozbargain and ozloophole/ozhack.
It's one thing to get 10%-40% of something, click, done. It's another to "save a single digit percentage fee that arguably shouldn't exist in the first place to then pay your tax bill by copy and pasting dozens of 'temporary' CC numbers into an ATO portal" :D
But yes, different strokes.
@nzcoops: Now that you put it that way, maybe we are ever-so-slightly crazy. The points do add up though. It does take a little effort, but just like in Mandalorian, "This is [the OzBargain] way".
Let's say you have to pay the ATO 30K a year in PAYG and taxes after filing.
Australia now: paying $30K in PAYG … and still on OzB 😬
Different people has different circumstances. You may not find this as a deal but many others may.
Picture the following:
a self employed tradie who has earns full income of $250k p.a. being paid pre-tax for all his jobs, but accrue a big tax debt at end of FY of $78k. Using this gift card deal to pay the tax debt (though lots of admin work) can earn 78k QFF / VFF points with a 1:1 conversion
credit card with large spending requirement (e.g. Bankwest world MC $35k spend in 5 months), using this method you can "spend" on tax credit (via gift card) and get a tax refund during tax return. This works for PAYG people too.
Get points on council rate payment (especially for those with land worth multi-millions)
Minor saving on the utility bills that charge a credit card payment fee (I think the savings is not worth the admin effort though)
Having said all that, this deal can still be risky, and may not be acceptable for some. I reckon for many others the reward is greater than risk depending on the use case :)
@cynix: Zip only allows the use of Visa/Mastercards. However, for these, you can use Amex, which usually offers a higher points yield.
@Yola: Ah good point, I forgot about that use case. I’ve been primarily using it to meet min spends for churning, so only cared about Visa/MC lately.
@cynix: Learning something new here… what is Zip BPAY?
Is that a BPAY payment via Zip Pay platform?
Edit - ZIP Plus seems to provide $8k limit which seems to be much less hassle and less risky compared to prepaid gift card. Is this what you're referring to?
@b0b0: Gotta be careful as not all the zip service allows repayment by credit card.
I have zip pay with $1,500 limit and I've been using it to pay off any bpay that it will accept and getting credit card points when I pay off zip pay with it. It blocks bpay payment to credit cards (paying off credit cards so this makes sense) and deft payment (😭) so I buy these digital mastercard purely for deft.
@b0b0: Yeah BPAY via Zip Pay.
I don’t think you can repay Zip Plus balance using credit cards, pretty sure it only works for standard Zip ($1500 limit). And note the Amex limitation mentioned above.
@cynix: Thanks buddy.
Do you know how does credit enquiry work with Zip Pay? I assume only the initial application will be counted as a credit application with $1500 limit - am I right?
@b0b0: Yeah pretty sure it does not show up as an open/active credit card. But I can’t remember if there was an enquiry at the time of signup not… it was too long ago :p
Can any of the Vanilla Visa prepaid cards be used to purchase these?
Tried for 10x: "Transaction failed, please contact customer service."
This happens to me if I use Safari on my Mac. I use Chrome and have no issues.
tried ~7 times and changed chrome profile worked
what does changing chrome profile mean?
Same here
Does this still work with ATO?
