Great little unit, I use it as an external sound card.

    • For that, why not something like an Apple DAC, and software bass/treble control?

      • +1

its all about the physical knobs

I believe this can deliver more power than an Apple DAC, meaning it'll drive higher impedence headphones.

I hear great things about Apple DACs though; one of their rare products where you get way more than you pay for.

ok ill give it a try, tho wtf does this even mean "ensures exquisite muslcallty" …

Sounds like marketing nonsense for "music sounds great through the device".

these make sense for audiophile grade cans eg. dt880 but pretty much snake oil for everything else. i use a sound blaster g6 and my MMX 300 definitely has more oomph and vibrancy compared to the motherboard audio - s1220a

with the g6 - games have more kick in explosions, i can hear more subtle instruments in music

Pretty solid gaming DAC. Mainly got it so I could have a physical volume knob.

Just note that you have to power the unit on every time you power up your PC.

Great tip! Just stopped me buying it and regretting. What a silly design!

      • Yeah its annoying if you only use headphones with your PC but its a plus for me as it automatically switches to my speakers when the DAC is powered off then I power on to auto switch to the headphones. Depends on your situation.

You might be able to allow constant power to the DAC even when the PC is powered down but I haven't looked that much into it.

      • It depends on your PC. Some shut off the USB ports when they power down, mine doesn't, and so it stays on.

You can also use an external USB power adapter to power it, and feed the audio in via optical cable.

Mine stays on, depends on your USB port you plug it into. Mine is set to keep power.

      • +1

Some laptops / PCs have always on USB ports, these should keep it on.

  • Not a fan of these EQ knobs. Really would be better to EQ device side or at least have an option to turn it off.

A lot of these cheaper DACs will be worse than the onboard sound on your device.

What, the onboard sound on your device is already using a cheaper DAC !

for the money its ok even though it has faults

if ur not gaeming dont buy as you dont need the eq and the input which is admittedly good

  • Are these any good to use for KVM switch to output computer speaker, not headphone?

  • +1

I bought one a while back for $90; if you have better than average headphones it's way better than your onboard audio.

Also, before I bought mine I read two reviews - one said it was great, the other said it was awful. When I got mine it was worse than the onboard audio, so I had it replaced and the new one was just magic.

    • So they send you a crappy unit the first time around?

      • Yeah, I think they had a bad run when they first came out, 2-3 years ago.

  • How are these any better than onboard audio? I don’t have any interference or hissing etc from my onboard.
I just use EQ and volume knob on keyboard.. how come external dacs are so popular?

    • "No hissing" is a very low bar.

These things do a much better job of producing sound than your onboard audio. With a decent set of headphones, things sound clearer, more distinct; more real.

      • Sounds like marketing hype if i’m honest. Plenty of searches say if you have clean sound from onboard, and it gets loud enough (i use 30/100 volume), then you won't notice an audible difference?

Can you link an article that confirms your claim?

        • +1

I’d say both statements are true.

Technically speaking it’s quite probable that something like this will produce clearer more realistic sounds than onboard audio - but it greatly depends on:
          The onboard DAC in question
What you’re listening to (music, games, quality of mixing/recording)
Personal ability to hear/be bothered by imperfections

For practical purposes I think you’re probably right, if you can’t hear hissing (interference/electrical noise) and it gets loud enough then most people won’t notice a difference in most cases.

If you’re listening to amazingly mastered music with a great pair of headphones, the difference will (probably) be noticeable - but I’d argue that if you’re that invested then you probably skip over this anyway.

If you’re using it for gaming as advertised, something like 90% will come down to the audio mix of the game as to how clear and how positional the audio is.

    • the output stage is bigger and higher power than what’s on a PC mother board so better volume before clipping occurs which is when distortion kicks in. my logitech speakers have headphone jack so use the audio stage from that to power my headphones. Am considering a small amp and passive speakers as i listen to music while working on my PC doing cad and PPoint for longer periods.

Have this, quite powerful. Too lazy to use a cord often so doesn't get much use, but when I do use it the sound quality is a lot better. Very powerful device for the price, way better than any built in audio jack.

  • I want a DAC because a tv I bought only has optical out and Bluetooth for audio and I want to connect it with my 90’s era stereo that only has RCA (red and white) inputs.

From what I can see, this DAC should get the job done but would anyone that knows more advise against it?

    • +1

Will do the job, but based on the comment above about having to manually turn it on each time, I’d consider looking for something running off mains/get a dedicated usb power supply for it - because that would be especially annoying for a TV environment.
