        Ok so my friend is thinking of a Canon dslr, what's a good camera to get? He's a newbie and will be using it for taking photos of cars.

          Moving cars or stationary? If moving then I think it's worth forking out the extra for a proper HSM lens (full ring pizo motor for fast AF), if stationary then it's not such a big deal, he just needs a lens that has a good crisp focus - but then most are if you stop them down to f8 or so. I couldn't why one body would be better than another except the the generic things like sensor size etc.

          Although I have a 550D, I like the Pentax's for their better low light performance and in body stabilisation. Unfortunately the Pentax's don't do video as well.

          For $950, you don't have much choices. 650D is a good entry level camera. Focusing may be a bit slow on fast moving objects. Maybe go for the previous model. 600D and use the extra cash for better lens. Make sure you get a lens with USM focusing motor for faster focus.
