New BYD Dolphin or Used MG4 Essence 64

We are wanting to get an EV and are looking at a new BYD dolphin essential ~$32k or a used MG4 essence 64 for about $31k. We only commute 100k a week and we only make an occasional long trip ~130km each way. Wasn't sure if the extra range on the MG4 was necessary.

We could do novated lease but will probabaly just pay cash.
Which car would ozbarginers suggest and is it worth going the novated lease route.

No loan or offset.
150k salary
Solar/battery avaialble to charge at home

cheers

Maybe it's just because these cars are so new, but they look perfectly fine when I see them on the road, they move just as well as any other car in city traffic.

      "We only commute 100km a week "

Why would you even consider an EV???

The payback period would be something like 20 years!

And depreciation on EVs is huge (especially MG)

Plus the cost of installing a proper charger on top.

ie Its just a losing proposition for OP and not economially viable either

Is this a case of the blind leading the blind?

For only 100km/wk - Stick with reliable ICE vehicle and much cheaper to buy as well

MG. Larger battery, more range. Cheaper. More established. Not in the middle of an owner/distributor change over. Subjectively a better looking vehicle.

It really depends on the MG. Is it almost new or 3 years old. Does it have 10,000km on it or 60,000km on it.

Best idea is to go down and test drive both and have a feel for day to day driving. Position in the car. How easy it is to see out of and how well it drives. Check out the features you are going to use and how easy it is access vehicle controls and settings.

We (as the collective community) can call it one way or the other, but ultimately, it's your money and you have to live with it. Go for a drive and really test them out and see what one you can live with the most.

What about 2021 post refresh Tesla. Nicer drive in the ~$31k range.

Just got to dodge the weird online Positivity/Hate circles.

  • MG

Better ride. Better comfort. Better motor. Cheap interior build. Awful stereo.

What's wrong with the car you currently own?

occasional long trip ~130km each way.

That's not a long drive. Just sayin'

    Drive both. Pick your favourite.

What is this black magic wizadry you speak of? FFS.

What I want to know is, I literally suggest this above but I’m being negged bombed for it… seems some people need some Anusol cream for their butt hurt and a Bunnings deal on axe grinders…

i thought you could buy brand new mg4 base model for close to 30k ?

mg4 base model 51 is the only one with LFP battery that you can comfortably use the whole 100% capacity,

remaining upper range models all NMC battery that you need to obey the 20-80% rule = effectively only 60% avail capacity

  • +3

We have a mg4 excite 51. Only do 500k a month and only charge at home. Absolutely love the car. Had for 22 months no issues and thoroughly recommend

Test drive both, to see if you can cope with the annoying beeps and dings
from "driver aids" that you have to turn off every time you get in the car?

Surely a novated lease is a better option than cash for your situation? No FBT and opportunity cost of cash not in mortgage offset/ doing some other work for you.

      +1 to this.

Search Reddit for the Australian Novated Lease Google Spreadsheet someone has shared. It’s incredible.

Will likely show that, given the tax benefits of a NL and BEV, that a NL will be cheaper than paying outright - even with all the obfuscatory games that NL quotes usually play.

  • BYD Attos.

  • Atto 3 owner here. Beware byd are likely to launch Atto 2 which fits between the Dolphin and Atto 3 in size and price.

  • HEV from Toyota get quick fill and mine dose 800km a week it one one $48 fill for my yaris cross

  • Any thoughts on GWM Ora?

    • So ugly

  • Geez… $150k salary and no loan i wont even consider a car of $30k. I would treat myself better with top of the range model.

If you plan it right, novated lease could be a good option.

Why spend more than you need on a financial liability? Spend less on the car and more on holidays i say.

      • This is entirely personal preference. I’ve owned various vehicles from $20k to $250k. I can’t remember when the last time I bought a car which was not top of the range. The comfort level is different. However, this choice is not for everyone. I just wanted to treat myself better, we only live once.

And this doesn’t mean I don’t have any overseas holidays. Likewise, i don’t go with economy for over 8 hrs flights. Once you travel with business or first class you’re not looking back.

        • Sure bro. Top of the line is always sooooo much better. Moslty better when you want to flex to your neighbours. There is no way a $250k car is $200k better than a $50k one.

But, you keep flexing on the internet for bro points if its your thing.

        • While I fundamentally agree that spending for experience and enjoyment is partly personal preference, I am not sure if your overall perspective is in line with this very website :D

Unless your idea of a bargain is getting 10k discount on a 350k Porsche…
