[VIC] Mountain Resort Entry Permits $53.60 Per Day (Was $67) @ Mt Hotham

91

Some good deals to be had on Spring skiing at all the major resorts, however this is arguably the standout, considering all vehicles that stop in the village need a Resort Entry Permit. So this (at 20% off) represents excellent value for the upcoming Victorian School Holidays for Day-trippers to Mt Hotham.

This is the best snow season they’ve had in years, so get amongst the snow, and enjoy it!

Something climate change, something Melbourne supporters, something this isn’t the OzB way etc etc

Still a rip off. Should be free

    • +2

Should it? How else can the resort keep the roads clear of snow, keep a village bus running, monitor road conditions and advise motorists when to put chains on?

        Classic ozbargain.

exactly…I work up at Falls. I agree it is expensive and is becoming an elitist sport but the fees cover a hell of a lot. People who say it should be free are totally clueless as to the costs of maintaining these areas.

        • +3

Something something vail. But yeah, as a frequent Hotham skier, it is becoming expensive, but the entry fees do cover a lot. Don’t get me started on lift tickets though…..

          • +2

@HamBoi69: yeah I hate Vail. They used to have local discounts and Vail destroyed that. there are a ton of Vids about how vail is ruining the industry worldwide

        It’s just pure corporate greed.

Absolute rip off. Somehow, the New Zealand resorts can offer free entry and free parking. Their left ticket fees must be enough to cover everything from road maintenance, clearing snow on roads, lift maintenance, even at half the price of the tickets here.

      • Their left ticket fees

You mean their ləft ticket fees?

      • +3

Have you seen their roads to the resorts?……

        • Yeah I love that there is no entry charge and free parking, but couldn't believe the kiwi resorts still have dirt access roads

          • +2

@aussieplip: I was told by one of the resort crew once that the reason for that was due to much less chance of black ice developing on open gravel roads and due to NZ winter conditions, black ice would form too readily on tarred roads up in the resorts. Not sure how true that is… I have come across black ice a few times on the normal tarred roads in NZ which is pretty scary.

  • excellent value!! man, they trained us well ..

  • Saving $14 to spend several hundred on lift tickets, chain hire, gear hire… I'll still upvote as I'd rather be there than at the office desk.

    • cheaper lift tickets in spring too though

  • I understand charging an entry fee for people who only go there to play with snow/tobogganing.

But it should be included into the lift passes, being the exorbitant prices they are. Or even discounted if you get a lift pass together.

    • +2

I get what you are saying but the lift company is a different business. Also, if it is like Falls, the resort grooms the slopes and cross country areas too.

Falls Creek charges $243/day per adult and $134/day for children. And for a standard family of 4, that's $754/day. The entry pass is not even 10% of that?

Not to mention ski hire, lessons and accommodation.

Understand making money, but surely there is a limit to how many different charges there is.

        • +2

If I remember correctly .. there are so many fees because each “component” (at a resort) may be/is owned by different entities/companies.

So the ski schools are ran by one company, while the lifts are ran by another, the accommodations are independently owned, etc.

The land, public accessible areas are owned by the government (and managed by ARV) who are responsible for maintaining the land (which is why there are entry fees during the winter). I believe once the ski season is over, so are the “entry fees”.

        • This is why I no longer buy a pass. I have a season entry permit and I use the back areas for skiing. Resort entry pays for the grooming of all trails and about 50km of back country areas for XC skiing. I go out to Heathy spur and have empty runs. I hate lining up in queues.
However, that is like half the things on ozbargain. Nobody pays the full price. Book the day before and it is generally around $180

As has been mentioned and clarified by @LAMB all are different businesses unfortunately

Better yet .. “buy” your own resort(s) and don’t have to pay any fee (for 99 years). 😅
