US Visa Waiver via Electronic System for Travel Authorization US$21 (US$40 from October) @ US Department of Homeland Security

1121

This may not be for all but only for people travelling to the USA soon. The fee for ESTA will be increasing to US$40, from the current US$21 on September 30, so if you are planning, you may want to apply before this date and save a few dollars.

Source: https://edition.cnn.com/2025/09/06/travel/travel-news-us-vis…

The Visa Waiver Program allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. The total cost is $21. When you apply, you will pay a $4 processing fee. If you are approved to travel to the U.S., you must pay an additional $17 authorization fee.

Each approved ESTA application is generally valid for two years and allows multiple visits to the U.S. within that period without having to apply for another travel approval. If your passport expires in less than two years, you will receive an ESTA approval valid until the passport's expiration date. When you travel to the U.S. for tourism or business under the VWP, you may stay up to 90 days per visit.

Be careful, when you get the email back from them make sure you check whether it has been accepted or not. I know this sounds obvious but it wasn't very clear and because I had been to Iran mine got rejected. Yeah I'm a bit vague and I should have looked harder! I just assumed it was a given.
unfortunately I did it about three days before my trip. Fortunately the staff at the American embassy were just absolutely unbelievably helpful and managed to fast track the Visa.
This was quite a few years ago and I believe things are a tad stricter now

you American by any chance? i understand education there is for the privilege. sounds like you arent in that category.

  • So $25+$4+$17 ?
    WOW!

Guys, what's the latest on the TV? Are we supposed to hate the US, using almost every single Magnificent 7 product to do so?

  • Cousin came here to visit. My family and I travelled with my cousin to go visit my family in the US. Cousin, myself, and the kids all hold US passports while my wife holds Australian and Brazilian. They sus her and pulled her aside to "interview" her for 3 hours. Don't travel to the US if you don't have to for the next 4 years.

if I feel like getting strip searched, interrogated, deported, I'll apply for this and go US

Too many brain washed people in this thread.

      • +5

"Brain washed" would be thinking things haven't changed in the US since January. Do you not watch the news? Have you not seen people rounded up, incarcerated and deported without any due process? Have you not seen the US National Guard is about to be deployed in LA and Washington DC, and could soon be deployed in Chicago? Do you think what is happening is normal?!

        • Doesn’t matter what you see or don’t. Everyone just says “fake news” if they see something that goes against their beliefs

        • +6

Have you not seen people rounded up

You mean the illegal immigrants? This doesn't have an impact on my short vacation.

          • +1

@watwatwat: As I'm sure you're aware, if you watch the news, lots of documented people have also been rounded up.

And no, it probably doesn't affect your holiday so go ahead if the human rights abuses, authoritarianism and jingoism doesn't bother you.

@AN Other: Actually, I support the activities of ICE.

            • @AN Other: When you say "watch the news" - I assume you mean slophouses like ABC and The Guardian right? Outlets that push a political agenda to illicit an emotional response out of you, like it clearly is.

If you aren't illegal alien or a involved with drug running, you will be fine.

  • Thanks OP. Good post. I'll buy now and then keep an eye out for flight deals.

  • Why not simply change the name of The Visa Waiver Program to regular Visa application?

I enjoyed my last visit to the USA. Will visit again in another 4 years.

  • If you dont agree with the Regine, Prime Minister culture bla bla bla dont travel to their place simple as that. while tehre their rules that should cover all travels around the world. So simple.

Nah, I'll pass for the next three and a half years.

Avoid democrat run cities and you will be safe.

  • Thank you!

    I will.be saving $80 US!

  • Any discount on the $5,000,000 America gold card visa?

  • +4

Let's be realistic: your chances of being detained at the border are pretty low. We hear about the fringe cases while tens of thousands of people go through every day without problems. Your chances of an ICE cavity search are low, at least if your skin isn't too dark.

I have visited the USA and enjoyed my time there, but choose not to visit until the regime changes.

I have to many JD Vance memes on my phone to delete.

  • Does anyone know if you still need to apply for this if you hold an APEC card? Never been to the US and am currently planning a trip to go at the end of the year.

Eh, I'd feel safer in the US than in Victoria.

    • The US is too heterogeneous for such a sentence to be meaningful.

    1) A future price rise does not constitute a deal
    2) (profanity) the USA and (profanity) Donald Trump

  • What happens to former US citizens? I'm planning to visit LA at end of Sept to see friends. Pray for me!!!

    found the lefties.

Don’t understand all the negativity towards America, I would love to go hiking over there, they have some amazing trails. The people are nice - so they have Cheeto Man. Meh.

    On my bucket list.

    • +2

It's not Americans. It's the ones that voted for this.

      • +2

Well, avoid the red hat people

    • +1

I was pretty underwhelmed when I went to the US.

Quite a wide divide in wealth and run down infrastructure everywhere. The people weren't particularly pleasant and the tipping culture is worse than their love for health insurance.

      • -1

        Sounds like Australia.

    • The people are great, the hiking is amazing.
But the immigration people have always been a pain. The US is the only country I've had problems with visas. And yes, it has gotten worse with Trump.
So be sure to plan ahead and do everything right.
However, i hear the Australian immigration people can be a nightmare too.

Funny how many people here are obsessed with US politics, but would not think twice about the local politics before visiting a 3rd world country.

    • If you’re young go in a few years time.

I’ve been to the USA many times and you’re right in parts it’s spectacular. But do you really need to go right now?

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) conducted border searches of electronic devices for 47,047 travellers in fiscal year 2024, which represents approximately 0.3% of secondary inspections and less than 0.01% of all arriving international travellers.

However, device searches have been steadily increasing, with over 40,000 searches in both 2022 and 2023, representing a nearly 41% jump since 2018, and a 16.7% increase in 2025 (second quarter).

  • What a horrible country to visit
    No thanks

    • There are good bits.

  • And they are still traveling there …

  • +1

Flying back to Aus from central America is hard since USA has most of the flights home
Either get the USA visa to do their stupid version of transit through on cheaper flights
Or go up to Canada or down to Santiago

  • +1

    OzPriceIncrease

(Still like people posting these as deals, but it's sad times that warnings of price increases are becoming a common category of deal)

  • worth remembering that having an ESTA doesn't mean they will let you into the country given the stricter border checks post trump's 2nd go at presidency.

  • +1

If you absolutely have to travel to the US but for any reason fear arbitrary detainment, transit via Canada instead and go via the US pre-clearance facilities at the big Canadian airports. If the US border officials there don't like you they'll not let you through to boarding, but they have no power to send you to a detainment camp because you're still on Canadian soil, and the Canadians sure ain't going to do anything to you.

And Canada is a nice country to visit, if you find yourself there.

  • Thanks but hell no. While I have lots of fond memories of the USA including being married over there I ain't going anywhere near the US while the Orange pumpkin ahem alleged paedophile is in power
