First Time Moving, Need Advice on a nbn HFC Provider

Hey guys, been prowling the site for quite a while now and just made an account to finally start contributing.

My girlfriend and I just moved out to our first place together in Rozelle/Balmain and need to get some internet happening. At the moment the nbn website says our house is capable of HFC (1000Mbps download).

I’ve grown up in a house that was just done and dusted Telstra but have recently seen tonnes and tonnes of little guys popping up all over the place for much more affordable prices. We need 100/20 mbps realistically and want to stay under $70 a month if that’s doable…

Does anybody have any first-hand recommendations for providers and hassle-free install/support moments + plus good congestion at peak hours for smaller providers? Keen to get something sorted before this big speed upgrade too.

Really appreciate it,
Thanks.

    You won't get cheaper than $50 for 500/50: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/921323

Seems to be working fine for me. Scan other offers in 6 months time when deal ends.

  • I moved to Exetel recently, found the peak hours I got better speeds than Leaptel (I was on 500/200 at Leaptel with a significant premium in price, Exetel's 500/50 is faster to download though. Obviously slower uploads).

Leaptel was good because 500/200 comes the 4 hour SLA to fix (it was nice when I had issues at the street level and they came out the same day to fix it) and their support is good.

    We need 100/20 mbps realistically

That plan is becoming 500/50 next week. Same price.

I'd wait until next week and see what special offers come into play…

Have 1000/50 HFC at my place, been with a few providers over the years and find Aussie Broadband the best in terms of speeds and easily the best to deal with in terms of support. You'll pay for the privilege, but imo they're well worth it if you're done dealing with crappy businesses in terms of help/support.

Cheap plans equal average peak speeds and garbage support.

  • A relative had HFC/Leaptel in inner Sydney until their lease expiry recently - excellent customer service and flawless internet performance - 12 mth discount too. Customer service was such a contrast to TPG group

  • You can do a search on (netbargains.com.au)[https://netbargains.com.au/] (disregard Opticomm and TPG FTTB results unless they're applicable to you; note this site currently misclassifies some as "NBN" in the filter).

You're not going to get under ~$80/month for 100/20 without jumping onto introductory or cashback offers and changing provider periodically.

If you want to consider ongoing pricing only, for $80/month you could get 100/20, which will become 500/50 in a few days, from Carbon Comms, or $85 at Buddy Telco, or $80 500/50 is already available from Exetel (and $100 cashback at TopCashback for Exetel currently).

This makes little difference to most people but Exetel uses CGNAT (no opt-out), as does Buddy (but can pay $5/month for static IP). Carbon Comms does not use CGNAT and includes static IPv4.
