I highly recommended brining whole chickens if you have the time and fridge space.

Otherwise, just get a cooked chook from Costco for $8.

    • just get a cooked chook from Costco for $8

Aside from price, how do they compare to the roast chickens from Coles or Woolworths?"

      • +2

My experience says Costco's are way worse

    • I have never bribed a chicken ,please explain, I'm genuinely interested.

        🐔

        • +14

Why did the chicken cross the road?
To collect his bribe after being insalted

    • I highly recommended brining whole chickens

      Why ?

      • assuming for the benefit of internal seasoning (like marinating, but just with salt)

        • -1

I just boil the chicken to make chicken soup though…

The soup already has enough salt.

    • -2

Costco? No thanks full of preservatives and chlorine…

      • +1

costco cooked chickens has chlorine in it..??

    • No one likes to eat the chicken breast at my house unfortunately

      • Just curious for what reason? Is it due to dryness?

        • Yep and it tends to be the most bland part of the chicken

    • Reason?

I usually buy cuts or curry pieces from the butcher. Reasonably priced and dont have the trouble of diy

    • Once I measured Costco's whole chicken (around 3kg), with the breast part weighing over 1kg, I think it's around $10 for Coles' only breast fillet. it takes time and a bit more hassle, but it's cheap.

  • +1

My favourite thing is to butterfly and season them then airfry it whole. Place it in a bowl with the lid on to let rest then dig in.

    • What air fryer setting so you use to keep it juicy.

      • +4

        The bok bok bok setting

      • Just the default 200c until it's well-done and dark enough. Putting it in the container straight after seals in the juices.

  • Upvoted, but I usually buy free range

Nothing beats steggles poultry. It tastes actual real chicken.

    • +6

They inject them with water. If you read ingredients its like 88% chicken. Rest is water, salt, sugar and unnecessary additives.

    • +1

Steggles is the worst, full of water and fat.

Best bet is Aldi > woolies,Coles > and so on

Try to get chicken 1.70 kg or lower.

      • +1

        Aldi ones are mostly Steggles

    • Arent these either just relabled Steggles or Inghams? Who else supplies bulk chickens in Australia.

Like somehow there are premium chickens?

      • +1

Who else supplies bulk chickens in Australia.

Baiada , but they have multiple factories from buying all other brands

        • Steggles is Baiada!

    • Steggles or Tegels?

  • Price-matching Aldi? That's new.

    • Good?

      • Yeah, they are better than Aldi birds according to my cat.

    • Yes but it's hard to find anything over 1.7kg in Aldi unless you go early.

      • +1

        Isn't smaller better?

        • +5

          Not according to my wife

Whole chicks rocks! Rub oil on chick, Salt pepper and whatever else you want eg paprika, some baking powder. Bake in hot oven around 220 or so. Stick probe in breast and pull when at desired temp around mid 65. Hopefully temps will hold for a while killing of bad stuff. Chicken should be nice and juicy. Better in smoker but oven will do.

    • -1

I did it with oil until I realised the skin contains enough of it for skipping that step. Also 180 works better for me. Also 65 not safe. Greetings

      • +2

65 can be safe if it stays at 65 for long enough

    • why on earth would you use baking powder…???????

      • The chicken is being baked in the oven, why not?

Seriously though, I would think that it probably makes the outside crispier.

        • -1

no point when its already going to be crisp when you add salt and pepper - if you want it more crisp then deep fry it. baking powder mainly for doughs, batters, cakes, biscuits, muffins, and pancakes.

      • Helps crisp the skin - much like salt on pork crackle.

Place lemon up chooks back passage, place in double biodegradable plastic bags you obtained free while obtaining said chook, dissolve 150 g of salt into one litre of water and pour in bag, seal bag with tight knot, place in fridge. Peel and slice and parboil six spuds in thirds
Sit on lounge all day scrolling for bargains, snip open bag carefully not to spill a drop. Put chook on tray and pat try. Take bag of brine to council reserve and put in dog waste bin and pay regards to old mate using the free bbq power and water. Brush chook with butter infused with thyme and sage as you bring oven up to 220c. Place in oven on top of bed of spuds for 15 mins. Turn oven down to 140c and test for clear juices after 12 mins and 8 mins. Remove chook from oven to rest under foil. Turn spuds over and put back in to complete cooking.

Sure no one asked for how I like my chook but I've not got anything better to do but force my cooking techniques on others

    • Slow day in Adelaide?

      • +2

        aren't they all?

    • pay regards to old mate using the free bbq power and water

Reminds me of that forum post of the guy who got a letter from the council about using free water, gas and electricity from local park next door.

I prefer mine not rspca approved thank you very much

    • +1

It means nothing, an oxymoron. A bit like humanely slaughtered.

    • i agree i want them to chase after those little T%^ds and beaten to death with a wooden stick… satire… 😂🤣👍

  • What does RSPCA Approved even mean? Is it free range? No hormones?

    • +7

Means they pay loyalty fee to rspca to use the phrase

    • +3

It means the RSPCA approve of innocent animals being slaughtered.

    • +1

Oh, it means Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

The RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme focuses on improving the lives of farm animals and making higher-welfare eggs and meat readily available.

    • no

    • Rscpa bought naming rights on chicken

  • What cost of living crisis?

  • -2

Only bad people in China would inject water into chicken, but it is common practice in Australia.

  • Damn it… last night I paid 5.5 per Kg…

OK, I will buy more chicken tonight for this week

  • +1
