Maximising Negative Myki Balance

I currently have an android phone which allows you to add a Myki card to the wallet, no card fee minimum top up $10.

My trip in the morning is free due to early bird travel (touch off before 7:15am). I only pay for the return trip, 2 hour full fare fare $5.50.

The system allows your Myki Balance to go negative and you can delete the card and add a new card which won't carry the negative balance over.

What's the best possible method to maximise the negative balance loophole?

Myki only work on Melbs so it is a only Melbs thing.

Sydney still using Opal card in 2025.

Lol, Opal and Apple Pay in 2025. Meanwhile, melbs just have Myki to pay. No wonder, when I was at Melbourne. People just literally consider the whole network as “free zone”.. very rare someone is actually paying. Yeah… Melbourne winning all the crimes. 😆😆

Brisbane uses Go Card and you can also pay via Apple/Android Pay and credit/debit cards. I still opt to use the Go card, it’s a bit quicker to read when tapping on/off. The other options are very convenient for tourists though

@FireRunner: Same reason why I still use a physical Opal card (and Go card); less chances of default fares

        • Opal is basically the same as MyKi.

I don't understand some people - just dumb trolls. Wish they'd just be banned from this site as they add nothing of value.

        • Tapping on starts a 2 hour pass, and some of us have weekly/monthly passes. TLDR; anyone could still have a valid ticket even if you don't see them use a card at all.

I have an annual pass and I never tap on to avoid tracking unless I need to go through barriers, ticket inspectors just grunt and move on to the next person when they check me.

Top up to $11 not $10. This is assuming you can still swipe if the balance is zero, if not top up $11.01.

And then add a new card and rinse and repeat.

This means every third trip home is "free" or close enough.

    • Can't top up in decimals.

Top up $12 - third 2 hour full fare runs into the negative - delete the card.
      Rinse & repeat.

    • Hahaha good find… Obviously they picked up on the loophole!

They’ve closed this loophole now. There’s now an annual limit of 5 Myki per phone…

      “Per phone” hmm

  • One grub reported this for illegal/banned despite being neither.

What kind of brown nose bootlicker do you have to be to do that?

Catch the bus, no one ever taps on.

  • There is no loop hole, as a ticket inspector that sees a negative balance will fine you as though you have no ticket. Even though you’re tapped on.

    • Yes Ive seen people asked to get off and top up.

But leniency is there for people with minor negative balances. Someone with almost a full ticket in negative balance would be pretty suss.

Probability you might end up ahead. But be prepared for major inconveniences.

  • its also too cumbersome / small to be worth the time to do I would have thought?

    • It's all about the thrill of gaming the system and saving a little bit of money using your spare time.

  • Fare evading is more efficient at this point (I'm not condoning it), because you're essentially doing that anyway..

  • I know they're very frequent on trams, but how common is it for ticket inspectors on trains?

Asking for a friend of course.

    • They're usually at stations, but do occasionally travel through the train in packs. They'll show up when you least expect it, meaning you'd need to keep a constant lookout for them. I find it easier just to pay the fare.
