Expedia: 15% Cashback on Hotels ($300 Cap Per Member) @ TopCashback

270

TopCashback has upsized the cashback amount for Expedia. The cashback rates are as follows

Hotels: 15% (capped at $300 per member) - upsized
Flights: 0.4%
Packages: 3%
Activities: 10%
Car Hire: 13% - upsized
Vacation Rentals: 2%

I have been tracking hotel booking + cashbacks for a few months and 15% cashback is a decent cashback rate.

Do Not Use This Deal Blindly

Before booking hotels, I think it's best to check the hotel price using the following methods and find the cheapest one:
1. Search using Expedia Check the price of the hotel using Expedia using Incognito Mode without TopCashback
2. Search using Google Check the price of the hotel using Google, by specifying the exact hotel and dates. This is often cheaper than method 1 above
3. Search using Expedia+TopCashback Check the price of the hotel using Expedia with TopCashback and calculate the price with the cashback. Keep in mind that the cashback amount may not apply to the tax portion of the price

Also, if it's available, use the free cancellation option and cancel/rebook later when a cheaper price comes up.

Notes:

  • Some OzBargainers have managed to get better prices using VPN with methods 1 or 2 above. I haven't tried this myself and it may require a bit of trial and error in terms of the country chosen. Based on comments from other posts, it might be worth trying Bangladesh. Refrain from using VPN with TopCashback (method 3 above) as VPNs are notorious for causing tracking to fail.
  • If you are intending to pay now and have an Amex, you might be able to stack this with Amex's Expedia offer where you get 10% off, up to $200 credit
  • Shopback has an upsized 17% deal and you can find it here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/923810

    Hi @RubyChoco

Per your comment in the OP:

Note: Some OzBargainers have managed to get better prices (on top of the three methods above) using VPN.

Please refrain from using VPNs for any cashback offers. They are notorious for causing tracking to fail. If they do happen to track, a lot of retailers like Woolworths, TEMU, Supercheap Auto, BIG W etc will actually decline tracked orders if an overseas VPN was active at time of purchase. So please be aware and turn them off completely prior to any click-out from TopCashback. Thanks.

    • Thank you for this. This might be a thing for Shopback only and I incorrectly assumed that it would work for TopCashback.

      I have updated the post

      • Affects any cashback partner as we all use the same tracking links and same affiliate networks. Many thanks for doing that.

      • I would have thought its more a thing where, for example, Google -> Expedia price is $95, Expedia direct is $100, Expedia via cashback site is $120, and then VPN can show $90.

Thus, it would never make sense to use cashback sites because its cheaper via VPN (Unless work is paying, and you can claim reimbursements)

Can you explain why accessing via Top Cashback or Shopback gives a more expensive price than just booking via Expedia?

How do you feel about this happening? It isn't a great look no matter who is at fault…

      • not sure about expedia, but i've noticed with agoda that they auto apply some sort of 'coupon discount' when browsing normally, but when going through the cashback link, it either reduces the coupon discount, or removes it entirely. either way, I usually find that regular cashback rates with hotel sites are rarely worth the hassle due to inflated base prices.

    • @tightarse New TCA subscriber in recent days. Quick question regarding the above.
Live in Oz but I spend around 90+ days in mainland China (and another 30 or so in other countries) each year access internet via a combination of hotel wifi, Trip.com eSim and Telstra Data Roaming. Not VPN.
Currently in China and made my first bookings via the website on desktop over the weekend, using trip.com and IHG.com. Had emails to confirm the spend tracked.
I take it no problems there?

  • Nice, 15% is great. Also noticed I get something called one key cash which is an added bonus on top of the 15%… closer to 17%… Price matched the incognito price so win all round! Thanks Op perfect timing!

    • Can you explain the price matching as this sort of thing usually invalidates cashback.

  • Be wary if you have the Expedia app installed and it is enabled to open the app from supported links. Disable it first and proceed via the website that TCB opens.

Havent had much success with any cashback via mobile, Always use a computer when you can on a browser that has no adblockers

      • YMMV but just did one on android (samsung internet) and it tracked within the hour. Still pending but it's there

        • Tracking isn't the issue, it's TCB accepting and confirming the cashback in accordance to their rules.

  • Is code EXPSAVE10 excluded?

    • I don't think it's a good idea to use it, because of this term, unless you can find the code advertised on TopCashback

Cashback is ineligible on use of any codes not approved and posted by TopCashback.

  • Wonder whats gonna happen now that ShopBack has increased to 17%….

    @tightarse 👁️

    • ShopBack is a flash sale 12pm-6pm AEST and capped at $180 per item for hotels.
