470

Shopback has upsized the cashback amount for Expedia ending at 6pm (AEST) today. The cashback rates are as follows

  • Hotels: 17% (capped at $180 per item)
  • Car Hire: 17% (capped at $180 per item)
  • Activities: 9%
  • Packages: 4%
  • Flights: 0.5%

Do Not Use This Deal Blindly

Before booking hotels, I think it's best to check the hotel price using the following methods and find the cheapest one:
1. Search using Expedia Check the price of the hotel using Expedia using Incognito Mode without Shopback
2. Search using Google Check the price of the hotel using Google, by specifying the exact hotel and dates. This is often cheaper than method 1 above
3. Search using Expedia+Shopback Check the price of the hotel using Expedia with Shopback and calculate the price with the cashback. Keep in mind that the cashback amount may not apply to the tax portion of the price

Also, if it's available, use the free cancellation option and cancel/rebook later when a cheaper price comes up.

Notes:

  • Some OzBargainers have managed to get better prices using VPN with methods 1 or 2 above. I haven't tried this myself and it may require a bit of trial and error in terms of the country chosen. Based on comments from other posts, it might be worth trying Bangladesh. Refrain from using VPN with Shopback (method 3 above) as VPNs are notorious for causing tracking to fail.
  • If you are intending to pay now and have an Amex, you might be able to stack this with Amex's Expedia offer where you get 10% off, up to $200 credit
  • TopCashback has an upsized 15% deal too and you can find it here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/923677

Should be able to combine with Amex get 10% back, up to $200 credit?

    • Good point! I completely forgot about this.

      I'll update the post

Edit: Based on the comments below (and me revisiting the Amex offer terms), I have crossed out the previous update

    • +1

I wonder if Shopback can combine with it, since AMEX requires you to access Expedia via this link http://expedia.com.au/amexoffers

Might be worth a shot if you access the link then "Activate Cashback" via their browser extension. Redirects you back into the AMEX page.

      • I'd wondered the same thing as it would be a nice double-up. The AMEX site says it can't be used with other offers.

On a previous search I noticed that the AMEX Expedia link produced slightly higher prices than a standard Expedia search on a different device. Not enough to invalidate the offer's value, but still annoying.

Comments in this post seems to validate our fears.

AMEX will track but Shopback (or any other platform) won't if you book via their link. Doesn't look like it will combine so best to compare both scenarios. Expedia inflates prices if clicking via any link that offers any form of cashback.

      • The Amex link shows hyperinflated prices on Expedia. It's a scam. I will get rid of my platinum charge as soon as they devalue the points in December.

    • No you can't, it's a special portal/tracking to book with the Amex discount.

    • Guy it worked last time for me, I got both cashback.

      • How? Did you just follow the ShopBack link and use AMEX to pay?

        • +1

I booked thru Amex link, got to the payment page, then open cashback (cashreward last time 10%)

      • Was both of them confirmed?

        • +1

          yeah, cashed out already

Has the VPN thing for hotels in Australia? Or usually works for overseas hotels?

  • Did 1 hotel booking, already tracked but at 12.2%? This is what’s shown in SB app. The amount tracked itself was already lower, which is fine, as it’s probably that way from the hotel, but SB tracked 12.2% from that lower amount. Not sure why as I booked around 2pm AEST

    • Hmm.. mine just got tracked at 17% - 1 hotel booking at around 4pm

    • Mine was tracked at 17% as well

Without knowing the details of your booking, I can only take guesses as to what might have happened. Is it possible that the booking was paid in a different currency, but the cashback is in AUD?

      • No, was paid in AUD with Westpac (and westpac part hasn't tracked yet). Probably will just cancel it. First time I saw something like this too, tbh (did it a few times without issue in the past)

    • Maybe a dumb question but…with these cashback deals on hotels, do they generally get paid out/finalised after your stay? Recently booked a couple stays for the first time through the TCB deal but just wondering when exactly they tend to get paid out, not staying til next month. I'd imagine it would be after your stay because otherwise what's stopping one from booking a refundable/free cancellation one just to get the deal and just cancel after?

      • +1

Days or weeks after your stay. Still worth it

      • +1

Just returned from a month holidays. Used a combination of booking via booking.com, Expedia and direct. Expedia stays were paid out within couple of days of the stay being completed. SB says that it was paid out early by 97 days. However, booking.com will be paid out for the stays even in August in November.
