A bit of stock around too. Not bad for OW post.

Yeah they had it for $49.95 for months and decreased the price last week

I have 7 various hard drives which have a total of 5.2TB of space, yet i still want one of these…
    I have a problem.

    • +21

      Ozbargain is the problem…

      • Im trying to rationalize it by saying i can use this to backup my photos and store it in another location in case of fire. At the moment my photo backups are on a desktop drive meaning its almost permanently plugged in to my computer.

        • +3

A VERY good idea and unfortunately not many poeple consider fire as a risk when planning their critical/archival data storage at home. Heck, for $39 buy a few of these, load them up with data, password encrypt it all and give them to friends and family to store away just in case… just don't ever forget your password :)

Alternatively, buy a fire safe (pretty cheap nowadays) and store at least two copies of your critical/archival data in there in your own house. Most cheapie fire safes can handle very high temps for a full hour plus they can handle drops onto concrete slabs from a couple of stories up plus they're even water & smoke proof too… well, if you believe the claims on the side of the box anyway ;)

        • If you and a friend have a decent internet connection and you don't add tons of data a month, you can also use the free CrashPlan app which lets you automatically back up your data over the net to a friend's or office computer. Takes away the laziness factor!

You could also use something like Skydrive to keep two folders in sync, you just lose out on the backup/archival features.

        • dropbox/amazon is your friend for cloud external back storage solution

        • Haha my upload is quite literally 12kb/s and i have over 90GB of photos. Considered uploading but it really wouldnt work.

        • I reckon the use of Google+ and the program Picasa is all anyone needs. Unlimited full res photo uploads, thats all I ever feel I need however as a professional that uses computers you should always be backing up documents on something like box, drop box, skydrive or google docs.

        • +2

The cheapie fire-proof safes I have seen only guarantee to keep the temperature below the self-ignition point of paper, which is easy to remember, thanks to the Ray Bradbury science-fiction classic "Fahrenheit 451" (equals 232 degrees centigrade). This portable HDD won't survive that sort of temperature, nor will any magnetic media that is commonly available.

So do store paper documents in a fire-proof safe. Don't store electronic devices or magnetic media there, or anything that self-ignites lower than 232 degrees centigrade.

Also, proper fire-proof safes should have a time rating on them, e.g. "fire proof for 30 minutes". Nothing can keep the inside of a safe cool indefinitely.

        • Haha my upload is quite literally 12kb/s and i have over 90GB of photos.

With CrashPlan you can seed the initial backup, i.e. plug in your hdd into your computer and do the backup locally, then bring it to your office or friend's place and plug it into the computer there and it'll pick up where it left off.

At 12KB/s though, I think you need to move. :)

So do store paper documents in a fire-proof safe. Don't store electronic devices or magnetic media there, or anything that self-ignites lower than 232 degrees centigrade.

Officeworks used to sell a Sentry Safe that has a USB passthrough, designed for backup HDDs. Dunno why they stopped selling it, I suppose it didn't sell too well.

          http://www.sentrysafe.com/Products/275/QA0121_FIRE-SAFE

        • Thats actually quite interesting on the initial seeding issue. My network actually spans two buildings so perhaps theres something like crash plan but all local network? Could just rsync it i suppose although ive never used it before.

          Yeah, and we pay $70 a month for 20gb bandwidth, 150kb/s download, 12kb/s upload…
And that is actually the best we can get. Real estate came today so hopefully will sell in the not so distant future!

Ahh, it also supports backing up to another computer or certain NASes over a LAN.

$70 for 20GB! You must be in the middle of nowhere!

        • Im 100km from sydney. Some stupid optus using telstras lines and telstra wont update them or some crap. Oh well. NBN Soon (i hope anyway).
I only actually live her for 4 months of the year anyway. The other 8 i have an unlimited fiber optic connection. It sure is a harsh change back..
And thanks for the info on crash plan. Ill be sure to look into it!

        • Everyone i know that had a plan like that (a decade out of date!) just rang them, and got updated free on the spot. Sometimes that means less money, always a much higher limit (5x - 10x). Obviously the line speed is fixed. But I'd ring them monthly, as upgrades often happen without pattern or notice. And unfortunately they'll almost never call you, unless they want something (contract etc)

      too much porn? lol :P

Bundled wit thee two things and got free shipping :) Needed a compact SD card reader to upload photos from camera, needed the hard drive to store all the photos while I'm overseas, and needed the $8 case to protect the hard drive. All works out!

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Cam…

    • That micro usb reader seems a bit steep. Way cheaper on ebay. Just remember thats a micro SD reader not a full size SD card reader if im reading that right.

      • A bit steep is an understatement. Can buy those for like $2-3 dollars.

        • 50c on ebay, they should last around 2 years with daily usage.
the microseconds card will outlast the adaptor

  • I have a 256gb drive in my macbook. If I were to get this and format it for Mac could I use this with Time Machine as a backup drive?

    • Sure can, I have one from the $49 deal posted previously

      • I'm so sick of hearing this drive is compatible with Windows that drive is compatibile with Mac. If it has a USB port you can reformat it.

  • How much is shipping to NSW?

    • +1

      $5.95

  • Are these relatively low power? I am looking for something that I can run from my tablet using an OTG cable.

    • Unlikely, most USB-powered HDDs draw MORE than the 500mA that a USB2.0 port is guaranteed to supply. If the HDD operating manual says you can buy an optional USB Y-cable if you need it, that's a red flag for power consumption. Most USB2.0 ports can supply more than 500mA, which is why USB-powered HDDs usually work okay.

The USB3 spec says USB3 ports should be able to supply 900mA, thanks to lobbying from HDD manufacturers. That should give you an idea of just how much power is used by USB HDDs.

USB memory sticks are a little better, but for the lowest power consumption, a good card reader and a SDHC card should be lower still. SDHC cards are designed for battery-powered cameras, so the power consumption will be reasonably low.

  • +2

    I have one of these.

It's a very slim casing = very easy to carry around. Only drawback is that it gets scratched VERY easily.

Not bad for backing up my collection of Top Gear episodes. :D

  • Bought one, thanks OP.

Probably going to toss some media onto it and have it permanently connected to the guest room DVD/media player. That will free up some raw drives I was using in a cradle. Then I'll have more room for my Steam library.

    What? I don't have a problem.

    • SteamMover is pretty handy if you have steam running on an SSD.

  • I wonder if this is a 7200 rpm or 5400rpm drive… if that even matters.

    • 99.9% chance it's 5400 RPM.

      • Samsung branded Seagate momentus 5400RPM

      • Yup, 5400rpm. Mine has a Toshiba MK3259GSX in it.

        • How did you find out exactly what drive model was inside?

          Did you open the case?

If so how did you do that?

          Thank you

  • Who else sells these? may be able to price match locally.

  • +1

OW have Seagate 1Tb 3.0 Expansion portable drives windows only for $89 which works out much cheaper. Funny they also have 500Gb for $85.

  • cheese510, only 5.2TB, I going for over 10TB on 2 HP Microservers to store all those prawn movies……:)
One for the shed and one for the House rsynced for disaster recovery.
I blame ozbargain for that. Evil site……

    • +9

to store all those prawn movies……:)

……. How many copies of District 9 do you own!

    • Haha, im after a micro server next. Unfortunantly, cannot justify spending that money at the moment, im after a new lens for my DSLR next which is going to set me back ~$750

      • Which lens/body?

        • I have a 550D, and im after a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS. Still saving though. Getting closer..

        • Nice lens, what are you after it for? Landscapes? or maybe portraits?

        • Landscapes or just general wide street photography stuff, currently have the kit 18-55, 70-300 and a 35 1.8, all Nikkor w/ Nikon d5100, I leave the 35 on pretty much all the time, though.

        • That actually looks like a quite nice lens. I hope you can find a good bargain!

  • Was about to bite the bullet, until we decided to check the brand of the storage that we hate using most (on the off-chance it is this same brand). And ta-daah! It IS Imation. So off to wait for some other deal.

    • I hear what you're saying, I recall losing a bunch of DVD-R's back in the day… but keep in mind the only part that here that's Imation is the external casing and even that's likely made by someone else.

The drive inside it all that matters and Imation have no involvement with that. It's either Samsung or Toshiba based on previous comments.

      • Actually, our complaint was with both the external casing (broken bits/connectors), and the drive itself. We don't recall treating that drive more harshly than the others…

  • -1

Get OW to price match on these. Only works out to be $39

    • +17

..Yes because officeworks will pricematch themselves.

      • +5

They try to ring themselves but get a busy signal so it doesn't work…

  • i might get one of these

    hey guys
i heard that these small portable usb powered hard drives are more susceptible to corrupting,
    is this true?

    anyone have any experience?

    • +2

Im no expert on hard drives but i cant see why this would true. I mean if you unplugged it while it was writing you may run into issues, but as long as you safely eject (yes people, you should actually do that) you should be fine.
I still cringe when i lend people my hard drives and i see them ruthlessly unplug them without safely ejecting..

      • haha thanks
        im like you
i alwais make sure to eject and hate it when friends dont x]

my friends small portable hard drive seem to have corrupted a couple of times
i alwais suspected it was because they werent safely ejected / taken out while writing.

        • I foolishly hot swapped a hard drive a few weeks ago (internal, small capacity, didnt really care about it). BAM, now so corrupt i cant even reformat it to make it read again. Its well and truly dead.

    • Sure. It's similar to those cheap oversea cases on ebay. Yes, it's slim and compact, but no any rubber buffer inside the case and no any metal rack protection. Just a hard drive directly inside a plastic case. It's really cheap at this price, cheaper than the 320G hard drive itself and worth the money. I bough it too, but just for using the hard drive. Dare not to use it as a storage for important data.

      • Are you saying we can remove the drives from the case? (Yes, i know ozbargain hates people talking about this)

    • +1

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that smaller hard drives are more likely to use FAT32 which is far more likely to get corrupted than NTFS which is used on higher capacity hard drives. It isn't the hard drive that is the problem reformat it to NTFS and you should be fine. Just on a side note when I had to format my Imation 320gb to FAT32 it needed fixing all the time.

      • My PS3 won't recognise it so I'm guessing it's NTFS.
Just bought it today to replace all the thumb drives that keep disappearing then reappearing. There are a heap of formats that the PS3 won't play so I play them through the Beyonwiz PVR which for whatever reason won't see media on the NAS so this will do the job I need it to and plenty besides.
Browns Plains Qld had about 200 this afternoon.

        • Yes it is NFTS

  • Will this work with my samsung tv so I can record program's?
It has the function to do it, just not sure if I can use a hard drive that's self powered.

    • +1

      Yes

    • Why the neg?

      • Probably so he would get the attention for people to answer his question.

        • -1

          What neg?

        • You negged the deal. Clicking 'Votes' above shows that you (or a mod) revoked your vote. I'm guessing you clicked neg by accident. :)

        • Must be my fat fingers on this iPhone 5.
          Didn't neg on purpose.
          Cheers.

  • Up to 3x faster rates than USB 2.0

Is that because of the HDD bottleneck or is it a crippled USB 3.0 device?

    • 3x faster is the real world experience. 10x faster is the theoretical value.

    • Obviously the USB is the bottleneck. The drive would perform faster, if for example it was taken out of the casing and plugged directly into a computer, or used as eSATA.

  • Thought it would be a good idea to buy it online and pick it up instore just in case it got ozbargained. Bought it online and got my confirmation email. Went instore and picked one up from the shelf. Told the checkout chick I was going to use the one from the shelf as an online order. Turns out they ship online orders from Victoria so it will take 1-2 days. She wouldn't let me take one from the shelf and cancel my online order. Apparently they can't do cancel my online order instore.

Btw, there was 50 of them at officeworks @ gilles plains SA.

    • Exact same thing I did, I went in the one at Aspley, Qld and they said I couldn't have one because they have to wait for it to be sent to them or something stupid. If I knew I couldn't pick it up after paying, I would've just paid instore.

  • I'LL BUY IT, then next turn i'm going to four houses on the mofo

  • Ahhh the only thing OW is bad for is that eventually prices drop on everything! I bought this just 2 weeks ago for $49 and yeah its a neat little drive.

  • bought one!

  • +1

The JB HiFi deal with the 1TB Seagate USB 3.0 portable for under $69 delivered was a better deal, but this is an ok price. Imation dumping the 320GB? Only showing 500GB and 1TB M100s on their website. Frankly I was surprised they still made 320GB external hard drives.

    • +1

This is a better deal if you dont need more than 320GB….

      • I do like the idea of hooking it up to my TV for PVR purposes. Just hesitating as I might already have something like that lying around at home! :D

      • +1

I can guarantee you WILL need more than that very soon ;-)
good deal anyway not for backups probably but as a portable storage.

        • No I doubt my 80yo grandparents could even fill half of it….

  • I just want a basic hard drive to back up some files on my pc. Will this do the job?

    • +1

If you have less than 320GB, yup!
Make sure you still have a copy on your computer though, in case this one (or any external drive) fails or is dropped or something.

  • Thanks bought one in Belco they have plenty of stock if you are in Canberra. Great price if 320gb is all you need.

    • Not bad, but if you don't need th extra storage, $39 is hard to beat! Such a low outlay for a portable HDD

  • Just what my mum needs. Perfect deal for tech-newbs who don't need much storage. Usb 3.0 yay!

  • Doesn't work with a wii unfortunately :(

    • +3

Just tried it and it does work with wii (USB Loader GX). Great price for just what I needed for the wii. Cheers!

      • interesting. It doesn't work with wiiflow. I'll give Loader GX a crack tonight! (if I can remember how… did all that stuff years ago). Thanks for letting me know!

      • Got it working. Cheers!

      • hi Juslookin I was wondering how you got imation apollo M100 to work on USB Uploader

  • Officeworks east victoria park [w.a] had about 200 to 300 of these for $39 each friday morning feb 1 they were everywhere!

On one shelf alone there was 66 and there was about 4 or 5 shelves the same on the end of one aisle.

    good price.

    • Same with East Perth store, lots and lots everywhere.

  • Just picked mine up from OfficeWorks Belconnen, ACT.
FYI - a quick speed test on Mac with Blackmagic Speed Test revealed a 78 MB/s write speed and a 77 MB/s read speed. So I'm very happy. I find it better for transferring large files than my Sandisk Extreme 32GB USB 3.0 stick. So this Imation is perfect for regularly transferring files to watch on our TV. Thanks OP.
(My OfficeWorks also has heaps of these in stock. At least 40)

  • Plenty at Officework Doncaster - I have just picked up 2.

  • Here are read/write speeds on USB3 port:
