Buying iPhone 17 Pro by converting Qantas Points to Amazon Gift Cards

Hi all,

I haven’t purchased a new phone in over 4 years (currently using an iPhone 12 Pro) and in need of an upgrade.

I’ve got a bunch of Qantas Frequent Flyer points, but I’m not planning to travel anytime soon. I’m considering using them to buy gift cards, and I’ve noticed:

Amazon Gift Cards: $2,000 value for 304,760 points (around 30% off)

JB Hi-Fi Gift Cards: $2,000 value for 433,400 points

My questions are:

  • Is it better value to go through Amazon now, or should I wait and see if JB Hi-Fi gift cards go on sale?

Or is using points for gift cards in general just a waste?

Has anyone had issues buying higher-value items (like phones) through Amazon?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s been in a similar situation.

    @mapax - guaranteed future content.

  • i do qantas points, so i buy like 5 x of the big $500 giftcard and get all the points. then i buy from jbhifi every year. i get the new 512gb promax every year. then i give last years phone to my children. so i alternate between them, so they get a new phone every 2 years so its fair. then i take the qantas points and fly around the world for a family holiday.

    • If you’re not buying your spoiled kids the latest iPhone every year, you have failed as a parent

    My only advice is that 300k points is worth way more if you use them as flights. That's like a few thousand bucks worth of flights in the grand scheme of things. But yeah why not

    • Yeah that’s my thought as well. Would be useful for whenever I need do travel in the future.

    Probably better just selling the points on OzB haha.
