Best way to pay ATO?

Hi Ozb,

Have a $15k ATO bill coming up. Never had a payable before. What is the best way to pay this to get some points out of it?

No AMEX but on the Citibank Premier Mastercard now. It says in T&C no government payment for bonus points. Will DEFT be picked up?

Snipp? 15 x Zip Bpay ($1k limit)? Post Billpay?

Missed out on the recent no fees giftcards unfortunately as card just arrived, would be great to knock off the $8k in 3 months spend with this.

Thanks in advance.

That's what i did, paid to an ABN, ABN then pays me 135k to stay at the 30% tax.
The remainder of the ABN claims costs and deductions, and I pay the 30% tax, which is also paid under the business bank account.

        • How much is the costs and deductions? What sort of deductions are you able to claim?

you generally have to wait for the "ATO" to contact you.

      • Wait till you receive an SMS from them with their generic/custom link specially for you…

    • And Amazon gift cards run a distant second

    • beat me to it

      OzB delivers as usual

$20 per fortnight. And welcome to Ozbargain.

  • The best way to accumulate points is by using a points-earning Credit Card and purchasing these Coles Mastercard Gift Cards whilst they've got their no purchase fee promos on. Been a while since, but they've even done 10% off in the past. You can then use it to pay off your ATO debt.

Expired last week though. But if something similar comes around then that'd be your best option.

edit: sorry just noticed you've already mentioned this in op

    • Yeah hoping for something to pop up soon. Delaying lodging my return hoping for better ideas.

Also keep an eye out for deals on (Vanilla) Visa gift cards1, as Coles very occasionally run deals on them in their stores.

For the last few years, Coles has run a 10% offer in VIC and TAS for $100 and $250 (Vanilla) Visa gift cards around late September. I suspect Coles will not do that again this year, because they now seem to be unwilling to run good deals on prepaid gift cards, but we may see another (Vanilla) Visa gift card deal in a different form (e.g. 2,000 bonus points) within the next couple of weeks.

Just in case you were not aware, avoid Activ Visa gift cards if you want to make payments to the ATO. It is against that gift card's terms and conditions to use them at the ATO, and they have always blocked transactions at the ATO.

        1. The reason Vanilla is in brackets is due to InComm - the gift card scheme operator - removing the Vanilla branding from Visa gift cards sold at Coles over a year ago (and from Visa gift cards sold at Woolworths about a week ago), but their basically-identical Visa gift cards sold at other retailers (e.g. Shell Reddy Express) still carry the Vanilla branding.

Bags of $100, $50 & $20 notes delivered to ATO office. If they ask any questions, just inform them it’s all legit as you do a bunch of cashie jobs on the weekends

  • May not be exactly what you're after but depending on the type of debt the ATO does pay interest for early payments: https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/paying-the-a…

    • Just income tax. One off, doubt will happen again!

For future reference, you can buy those no fees gift card on zip credit card so you get extra time to pay off zip pay when you get new credit card. I think a lot of people use zip for bpay and other promos and forget there is a zip credit card associated with your account that will work anywhere

Without paying extra 'fees', basically none. Pay it and move on

    • 15 x Zip Bpay ($1k limit)?
      No fees.
      This is the way.

The ato said i could pay with walmart gift cards, at a discount.

  • I use Bankwest's credit card to pay via BPAY, then use Easy Instalments to pay back it in four months.

    • is government payment counted towards the min spend for bonus point with Bankwest? That's good to know.

      • I'm not using a reward card, but at least it seems Easy Instalments have no problem with such payment.

  • I used pay.com.au with an ANZ credit card and accumulated a lot of QF points in the process.

I've found the best way is to B-PAY via credit card. I think you still earn points and get 2 months interest free. Only limitation was I could not schedule the payment so I set a calendar reminder to do it the day before due. I'm with Macquarie Bank.
