Got some at Aldi recently, very bland, mild heat, no real depth to it at all. If all you're doing is trying to add a little heat it's fine I guess, but much better options out there

Wow I would have to disagree with you there. Its one of my favourite hot sauces as it has so much flavour and its the type of heat that blends with a dish rather then overpowering it.

      • same, totally agree this is a very under rated sauce. Not about the heat, its about being a fermented hot sauce - goes fantastically with loads of different cuisines.

    • -1

No way..i had it it is awesoen- so much flavour

    • Disagree, this ones good. Nice flavours for everyday use. If you want something hotter and stronger for cooking go to your prefered sauces, but on tasties or eggs, this is good.

    • +3

Unlike these others… I strongly agree. I have to put twice as much of this stuff on food to get any of the flavour or heat I would expect from a hotsauce. The price point is low, which is nice, but the quality and experience isn't worth it.

      • +1

That might be true, but its impossible to concentrate a flavour while retaining the same flavour.

In other words, making it twice as strong would result in a different taste.

    • +7

Agreed it’s pretty basic. No flavor complexity and mild heat. Can be nice mixed with a mayo for a low heat sauce.

Is tobasco or franks a betters brands?

      • nope, Tabasco and Franks are both bland. this isn't. To each their own, but you won't regret paying $2 for this.

        • Thanks, might try one if im gonna go coles

I really liked Tabasco with spicy fried chicken

What foods do you usually put it on?

          • @ATTS: i put it on anything lol, chips, omelette etc. quite versatile.

        • +1

I don't mind the Cholula, better than all of the above

    • I really enjoy this hot sauce

  • +5

Yeah, I was quite surprised with this. Wasn't expecting anything much, but was quite nice. No real heat but good chilli/vinegar flavour. Defo worth it for $2.

  • +14

Best hot sauce for $2, and it’s Australian made.

    • agree

      • +1

for $2 its more than acceptable but its a pretty bland mild affair

as said before anything from mcillhenny is better but they arent $2 lol

  • +1

    How's it compare to Franks?

    • +3

The flavour is a bit different I find it a bit richer which I think is better.

    • +1

This goes great with Franks. When I make buffalo wings. I add this to my Franks hot sauce to make it hotter. Since the standard Franks isn't hot enough for my liking

    • According to the science company who made the sauce, it is better

It turned out to be a better choice than Frank’s hot sauce who was the best hot sauce in the local market at the time

        Wait, according to their website:

Billy B’s isn’t just another hot sauce—it’s a genuine Aussie original. Born in Bill’s own kitchen, this fermented hot sauce was crafted with love, using real ingredients and a whole lot of flavour. It was never about heat for the sake of heat, but about creating something bold, tangy, and truly delicious.

        But according to foodscientistforhire:

Food Scientist For Hire has been asked to create an economically viable fermented chilli product that would also have a mass-market appeal in the Australian market. A challenging task that inspired our foodies to give the best they got!

After the brief was executed, we accomplished to exceed our client’s expectations in regards to flavour delivery and pricing! Made by fermented chilis from Australia our hot sauce had a surprisingly good lemony and garlicky taste that is just perfect for sandwiches, on top of rice, or just on top of anything really.

We only used local ingredients to make things more convenient, easy and affordable. We also optimized the process to get full flavour delivery and streamlined the manufacturing. This project has delivered sales and listings to 600+ Woolworths stores which is one of the leading retailers in Australia

It turned out to be a better choice than Frank’s hot sauce who was the best hot sauce in the local market at the time. So if you have a similar product idea, don’t hesitate to contact us today!

So everything in the Billy B website is just marketing fluff?

        • +7

Yeah, it seems to be. Went down this rabbit-hole a while back - even though it tastes great, the backstory seems to be completely spun out of nothing. Such a weird decision to even lie in the first place.

    • Less tangy and less spicy but more clilly flavour

  • Looks like a hot Australian made!

  • +2

Culleys is one of the better supermarket chillis but price is steep.
Tried this one and wasnt a fan
Heinz used to make a really good one think it was called bulls eye that was great

  • +1

Can confirm it's one of the better hot sauces I've tried.

  • +1

How does it compare to Huy Fong
    Sriracha?

    • They aren't at all similar. Sriracha is a thick and garlick heavy sauce. This is more comparable to the other watery, fermented, American style hot sauces like Franks, Chulola and Tabasco. Compared to those, I think this is much nicer. It tastes very much of cayenne peppers which I like and it's not as acidic. There isn't too much else to the taste, but it's a cheap fermented sauce so you can't expect too much. Unfortunately it's very low on actual spicyness as well.

Overall I think it has a great taste and it's a solid pickup over the others in the category but I just really wish there was a much spicier version. Maybe I'll start adding capsacin extract to it and see how that goes.

  • +2

I really like it, got one bottle and loved the taste - not too hot - but that's fine for me these days. Spicey and with a good flavour!

Ended up grabbing another two bottles as they have a shelf life till 2027.

    Highly recommended 🌶️

  • +1

I reckon it's good. More flavour than heat.

  • This or LAO GAN MA?

    • +3

Get both, they are for different applications

    • +3

Lao gan ma and kewpie on rice and meat is heaven

    • +1

Lao gan ma chilli is addictive

  • +1

Anyone try Tapatio? I find the smokey chilli and vinegar flavour and mild heat (not spicy but warming) good on a lot of things when you don't want to get it too hot but introduce a little spice.

    • Yes a solid fave in Chateau de Sparkle! Very versatile too, as it happens.

    • +1

Tapatio is great but my go to is Valentina just because you get like 4x the amount of sauce for the price and I go through a bit.

    • Same here. Even on pizza

Even today for all the stock in supermarkets?
Even though Food Scientist For Hire was asked to create an economically viable fermented chilli product.
    Where was Bill?

    Which is marketing speak for

an economically viable fermented chilli product that would also have a mass-market appeal

    https://foodscientistforhire.com/billy-bs-fermented-hot-sauc…

Bill's two sons have brought this old family recipe to life in small batches for the first time for everyone to enjoy.

What they really mean is that some people went to a Food Science company to create a product they could sell as hot sauce for the lowest possible cost

  • Thanks OP, I'll give it a go!

  • This is my favourite hot sauce. All the flavour of a spicy hot sause and almost none of the heat. Perfection.

  • +1

    Very low in calories too

  • +3

make it at home, chemical less.

    • +1

Oh yeah! Well, not so much the chemical, but you get to play with all sorts of chillis. My current fave is about 80% rocotto and 20% habanero, plus a bit of garlic and a few urbs.

  • "200mL"

Product “back stories” make me wanna throw up, they always come across as such wanky bullshit.

    • +4

Cmon bro it's definitely the one guy cooking this in one big pot in his kitchen for the last 60 years that's totally believable bro

Why are so many people crybabying about this having some storytelling in the marketing here, as though they're new to how the everyday world works and has worked forever? What a weird thing to get collectively stroppy about.

This is a great unsophisticated sauce for the sriracha-adjacent grouping on your shelf.

Probably my second favourite Aussie-made daily-driver, next to the trickier-to-get Sir Racha (just as a heads up they use a boxer on their bottle, and the people who make it might not actually be boxers; just so those of you who are for some reason upset about marketing existing can stay equally upset with them too).

  • Perfectly adequate source of heat for $2
    Thanks OP

  • Just taste like vinegar and has the consistency of water, at least it was only $2
