How is it guaranteed on such an old phone? Has it been replaced since Apple first manufactured it?

  • 10 phone generations later.

    • +2

      10 phone generations later.

Proves things made in the past were designed to last, unlike that of today. :-)

Yes I am taking the piss.

      • Who said it last? It won't support anymore apps, even the flappy bird.

Many banking apps would drop iOS 15 when iOS 26 finally launches.

        • I would still be rocking my 7 if it was not that the banking apps were no longer supported.

I turned on my iphone 6 last month and i couldnt even sign in icloud or open app store lol, this will pretty much be a brick in a few months

    • ++ already is.

      • Yeah but it comes with a rugged case

    • That is one gen too old. The 6S, released 10 years ago, is still getting updates to IOS15 .
Your iPhone 6 only has 1GB of RAM, which is why it has long been useless.

  • +3

iOS 15 won’t support all current apps and is not secure.

    • how about ios 16?

    A summary from Gemini:

As of September 2025, purchasing a refurbished iPhone 7 is generally not recommended for most users.

The iPhone 7, released in 2016, is nine years old and no longer receives software updates from Apple, having been skipped entirely by iOS 16 in 2022.
This lack of support means the device does not receive new features, security patches, bug fixes, or compatibility updates for newer apps.
As a result, many modern applications may stop working or become incompatible over time, and the phone is more vulnerable to security risks.

While refurbished iPhone 7s are still available from some sellers, such as Backmarket, where prices start at $62, and they may be suitable for basic tasks like calling, texting, or light web browsing, their performance >is limited by aging hardware and degraded batteries. The single-lens camera system and smaller LCD display also fall short compared to newer models. Although some users find value in the device for nostalgic >reasons or as a backup phone, the overall user experience is significantly diminished compared to supported models.

For better value and longevity, alternatives like the Certified Used iPhone 11 or iPhone 12 are strongly recommended. These models offer superior performance with the A13 and A14 Bionic chips, longer software >support, better battery life, improved cameras, and 5G connectivity. The iPhone 11, starting around $140, is considered the most budget-friendly supported model in 2025. Even though the iPhone 7 may be cheaper, >the lack of updates and increasing app incompatibility make it a poor long-term investment.

Given the significant drawbacks of the iPhone 7, it is advisable to choose a more modern, supported device instead.

  • This device isn't covered by current security patches, and should be avoided.

  • Just had a quick look at the big name apps on my phone and UBank was the only one that won't run on 15. Everything else (Facebook, Google, ANZ, etc.) all work on 15.

  • But why.

  • i would rather go for a cheap telstra brand phone.

    • You really shouldn't. 100 buck Telstra phone may be new, but it will be worse.

I'm far from an Apple fan, not even an Apple user…but my old iPhone 7 will smash any 100 or less prepaid phone from Telstra.

      • Probably not worse from a security standpoint.

  • Pretty sure these are very easy to jailbreak and hack

  • Thoughts on chucking this in the car for a carplay device + dedicated music player. My wireless android auto situation is a mess.

Many of us purchased this iphone 7 in its hay days.
    Then
Many of us purchased iphone 8 in its hay days.
    Then
Many of those who purchased iphone 7, purchased iphone x in its hay days.

The story continues… not just for iphone but for any other devices

Just think - what happens to iphone 7?

We should be thankful to companies who are recycling/refurbing ewaste and making them reusable in anyways. It might be useful to someone who doesn't want any apps! May be as a secondary phone!!!

Some good discussions here, but at least let's not make fun of it… thanks for your understanding.

    • It's being advertised as "The iPhone 7 is compatible up to iOS 15, meaning you’ll still get all the essentials covered — calls, texts, browsing, social media, streaming, and light apps"

This is not being advertised for jailbreaking or other uses, and because it doesn't have security updates, should NOT be used as a 'secondary' phone. Buy a throwaway Android with an OS that still gets patches if you're that desperate for a cheap backup phone.

  • Very good phone but dated

  • Someone has been raiding the apple museum again

  • Still on my iPhone 7 Plus, it does all I need apart from the battery.
