Is Felix Unlimited Really Unlimited? Will I Get Banned

Hi Ozbargain,

I recently noticed how expensive NBN is,

I couldn't justify spending $60+ p/month for just myself and my partner, that's more than double my phone plan. That got me thinking,

Felix Mobile uses the Vodafone/TPG network and offers 'Unlimited' Plans for $40 per month (capped 40mbps),

Combining this with a referral code, gives you 50% off for 4 months, making the plan $20 per month for 4 months,

After the 4 months, we plan on referring my partner and then switching the sim to her and vice versa,

I bought a TP-MR105 4G Modem off amazon, and flashed the software to a vulnerable version which lets you change the IMEI.

I changed it to my iPhone IMEI (to reduce suspicion and get around the approved device list), activated and plugged in the SIM and it works great.

I have Kogan Mobile for my phone so I knew previously that we had good connectivity to the closest tower, we get a constant speed of 40mbps down / 20-25 mbps up, this works great for 4K streaming and we both work from home and teams etc works great.

We are now 15 days in to our first month and 190.6GB used, my question is how much is too much? Do you think they will limit our plan or ban us,

I estimate a saving of $30-$40 per month when compared to a similar NBN 50/20 plan,

Anyway, what do you think…

Plenty of discussion about it in felix deal comments, no need to create a new forum thread

  • I won’t tell if you won’t

  • Reported to them, guess you will soon find out :P

I tried Vodafone for home internet and with the amount of dropouts I wouldn't have it even if it were free.

    • Before or after the merger with TPG?

        Yesterday.

I couldn't justify spending $60+ p/month for just myself and my partner

That is $2 per day… or $1 per person per day

  • OP really just admitted to a crime on OzBargain lmao

  • They can always hit you with the Fair Use policy https://static.felixmobile.com.au/terms-policies/standard-fo…
They can probably check how many hops your data is taking, so the IMEI changing might be a bit of a moot point.
I guess do it until you get caught?

Will most likely get a warning email before outright ban.

Reminds me of the days of "unlimited dialup" - and I used to flog it 24/7 downloading from FTP/nzb servers.

WOULD expect an email after maybe 6-9 months 100% flatout use. Until then … Happy days.

    • Fair Usage is applied to all unlimited plans. I was sometimes using 2.5 terabytes a month because I was steaming 24/7 and never got a warning. An article came out soon after that someone in Australia was using 4 terrabytes but again was not kicked off their plan. Felix plan is a good unlimited option but for soft users.

  • I have been with felix for a bit over 2 months, at first they were ok, but NOW THEY SUCK.
Low or no signal (and overcapacity at peak times) almost everywhere in Sydney CBD and Eastern suburbs meaning no internet, or worse than 56k dial up modem speeds (yes you can actually see text chunking in on your phone screen).
If you can find a location where it works then it works quite well.
Once my discounted 3 months is over I will be moving.

So felix can offer you all the data on the internet but you would never be able to make good use of it.

$60 per month for NBN is pretty damn cheap… It's fair to say some things are a rip off, but the internet costs are pretty reasonable. In this case OP is being a scrooge.

I paid more for ADSL a decade ago which was much slower and more likely to go out.

    • Yep Neptune NBN base plan $55 or Fubar NBN $53.95 ongoing. Some awesome, affordable options out there these days. And 25/10 is pretty usable for 80% of households

  • I also have this modem want to try to change the IMEI. are you able to share the softwarewhich lets you change the IMEI for TP-MR105 4G Modem? Thanks.

  • Convert Mbps to MB/s

    40 megabits per second ÷ 8 = 5 megabytes per second (MB/s)

    Per minute

    5 MB/s × 60 = 300 MB/minute

    Per hour

    300 MB/min × 60 = 18,000 MB/hour ≈ 18 GB/hour

    Per day

    18 GB/hour × 24 = 432 GB/day

    Per 30 days

    432 GB/day × 30 = 12,960 GB ≈ 12.96 TB

  • I got a mate who has been doing this doe 3 years but only uses about 250ish gb per month. Honestly its just profit for TPG so rare they will kick you.

  • 40mbps down / 20-25 mbps up, this works great for 4K streaming

That's not really 4k but if it makes you happy then you'd be fine with it.

  • You both work from home and are complaining about $60/month for internet? Wait till you find out how much commuting to work costs! 🤯
