  • What network provider

    • +9

      Fairly sure it's vodafone

      • +8

        Correct.

They're so good currently after the tower share agreement with Optus.
Literally 4x the coverage in QLD alone.

        • +1

100% i was blown away how much cover vodafone has now, in some places there is a signal where i use to get none with telstra i think what they did was put coverage in places telstra struggles with lol.

    • +4

      It's on the Vodafone network.

Felix Mobile is a subsidiary of TPG Telecom which also owns Vodafone.

    • +1

Vodafone. I have used them (felix) for 1 month now, mainly for data and at first they were ok, but TOO many times now the internet is slow or non-existent - Sydney CBD down to Maroubra, especially between 8am and 930am, plus random other times.

  • +11

Hopefully this is the start to unlimited data from all telecos

    • +14

this plan has been around for a while now

    • +4

Telstra used to have an unlimited data plan for $400 / month with no speed cap.

      • +8

Explains why that plan no longer exists. Who can afford that every month. When you can get an unlimited data Gigabit NBN plan for a fraction of that price. Paying $400 per month for that mobile plan is a joke.

        • +4

Sorry, it was $199, not 400. The best part is the 10GB of roaming data and unlimited international calls.

        • +1

More details: Telstra Ultimate plan. I believe in the early days it used to include a phone bundled in too (eg, could select an iPhone X) which made the value a bit better. But yeah, since discontinued.

      • I had the $500pm unlimited 4G plan back in 2013

        • +1

6k a year? Was it really worth it?

          • @DannyBoy: Yes. The ability to download high volumes of data at high speed whilst mobile blew my mind. A taste of the future.

        • Yes, at work we often need to upload 200+gb per day while in the field.

The admin team mixed up our phone plans a few years ago, and we racked up a $75k bill before they realised.

    • -7

Hopefully this is the start to unlimited data from all telecos

      Hopefully it isn't.

Why should the people who don't want huge amounts of data have to subsidise the people who should be using the NBN network and paying NBN prices if that's what they want. The phone network has limited bandwidth available. People who want lots of data shouldn't hog it and slow everyone else down.

      • -1

Isn't that like when you used to pay per min on voice calls

      • -3

free market. if NBN is going to be overpriced then too bad

      • -7

You clearly don't understand how the free market works.
Let me guess: you like Albi, right?

  • +2

This is pretty good despite using vodafone, I signed up to 6 months half price though.

    • 6 months half price? How? Please tell

Customer support any good or dead beat waiting times?

      • +2

it was a one off deal a few months back, best you can get now is 4 months with a referal code

      • +1

I saw it from either a instagram ad or facebook ad about 4-5 months ago. Haven't needed to contact support but they have a chat app built in the app that works like normal messages

  • +4

Sign ip with a referral to get 50% for 4 months instead of 3 months 😉😉

Get $10 of felix credit + give a friend 50% off their first 4 months when they sign up and activate with your referral code. You"l also go in the running to win a trip

      A post card will do.

    • I couldn't find where to put any codes — it just went straight up to check out with the 3 mo's x $20 offer — so I took it.

      • +1

Bit late, but you need to 'remove' the default 50% offer in checkout and then add the referral code.

Just a reminder Sim won't work in a 4G modem

    • Or a 5g one?

    • +4

Incorrect. Had that in my ASUS modem with built-in 4G for almost 18 months now.
      Zero issues.

      • +1

        Same, had one for years

      • +3

If they detect its not being used in a phone they can disable your service. I am guessing your IMEI has not pinged on their system yet. You got lucky.

Normally you need to put the sim in a phone & tether it to use it as a home internet replacement.

      • Interesting, which exact Asus modem do you use?

        • +1

I have been using felix in telstra smart modem gen 2 (technicolor dja0231). Almost 2 years and nothing happen. My friend tried it in a tplink router and internet stopped working after 2 months.

My router is suppose to be locked to telstra but i have it rooted to use other networks.

  • +2

I could never get over 5-7 mbps during peak times and often 18mbps on off-peak. I wonder if it has improved since then.

    • I am experiencing pretty much about the same, with lower off-peak speeds, closer to 10-12 mbps

    • +1

I just ran speed test and getting 11mbps. I also got a notification this morning they upped the max speed for unlimited plans from 20 to 40mbps.

    • +3

I used it for 2 months in Perth NOR areas. Abysmal experience. Speeds around 0.5-1.5mbps in evenings, 7-12mbps after midnight and then below 3mbps throughout the day.

Online support basically takes several hours to connect to human after asking 10 self troubleshooting questions. And unavailable after like 5-6pm.

I think too many people in my area got it at the same time. It was too good to be true and that sort of speeds I can't live with

  • +1

They also have a data bank with the amount of data you haven't used that month

If you are from Perth, there are a few blind spots where the reception is awful (West Leederville)

    • +3

So if it's unlimited data, what goes in the data bank? More unlimited data…?

      • +1

They are confusing the unlimited plan with the $25/month 25GB plan (with unlimited data banking)

        • Correct. Felix has lower priced plans too.
          25GB at $25 per month
          50GB at $30 per month

Any unused data for these plans gets carried forward to the next month.

        • no no, it is $25 WITH the data bank… I have over 250Gb on my data bank and I've been using it for the past year

          • @luizmarin: Yes, the $25/month 25GB plan (with unlimited data banking)

          • @luizmarin: The point is that "unlimited data" with a data bank doesn't make sense haha. And you're commenting on a deal for unlimited data.

You're not wrong in talking about "unlimited data banking" - it's just that you're referring to a different Felix Mobile product

  • +5

Has anybody used this as a dedicated hotspot or Internet connection?

    • +5

For the last 3 years. Works fine for me.

      • subwoofer: "reminder Sim won't work in a 4G modem."

How do you use the SIM for home internet?

        • +3

Don't know about iPhones but many Android devices support ethernet tethering.

        • +4

I have a cheap wifi router with a USB input that I USB tether the phone to. The router keeps the phone charged, so I just leave the whole set-up alone and reset occasionally.

          • @highwind: Same here, on an old cracked screen Xiaomi phone, USB tethered to $40 Mango modem/router daisy chained to a couple of other wifi routers left over from previous internet plans.

        • +2

5G phone with SIM in it, USB tethered to a GL.iNet travel router. The USB tether keeps the phone battery topped up.

That lets me unplug the phone and take it away and the home LAN keeps working, just without an internet connection, meaning I only need to pay for one 5G plan for both home internet access and a phone to take with me.

I could do it without the GL.iNet travel router and plug an ethernet adapter into the phone, and use an ethernet switch. But then my home LAN would stop working when I unplug the phone, and there's stuff I need to keep working.

          • @GordonD: Which GL.iNet do you recommend/use?

            • @Baby Noodles: I bought this one for ~$35 a few months ago. Pretty much cheapest one available, but works reasonably well (it doesn't negotiate properly with newer USB chargers, so connect with an old USB-A charger then tether to phone via USB)
              https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07794JRC5

          • @GordonD: Oh I thought those GL.iNet routers ran on battery? i.e. whilst yes it would charge your phone while plugged in, wouldn't it drain the battery of the router itself? lol I must be mistaken

            • +1

@illumination: Yeah, you are. You sure need to plug it into a powerbank, if you take it with you — they're sold as travel modems — but they don't have a battery of their own.

      • +2

Last 6 months for me. It's my only internet since I live alone and I save a bundle on dedicated physical internet.

        • Same here for the last 3 months, and we're in a family of 3 that often works from home. For basic browsing, emailing and streaming, is more than enough.

    • +2

Yeah, with the Samsung A8 4G tablet. Connected to a router with this adapter (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BD8PYPH8).

Thinking about getting a cheap 5g phone for some extra speed. I'm near a train line so it can be slow during peak hour.

    • +1

Yeah used it for 3 months, worked fine for university work etc, speeds were surprisingly over 50mbps from midnight to morning for me.

  • 5G capped at 40 Mbps :) :) .

    • Unlimited data for $40.

  • +1

My biggest issue with Felix/Vodafone was that when outages occurred, there was no communication whatsoever. Have been with them twice due to good deals/liking their plans in theory, though left when unexplained outages occurred.

I get the appeal for someone who uses this as their only internet connection (unlimited data), otherwise I would rather pay $39 per month with Boost for far less data/reliability (not factoring in cheaper annual plans).

  • -6

    Vodafail, who else but!

  • How to make it work on a 4g modem? If at all possible

    • Well i'm fairly sure that the 4G modem needs to be network unlocked for it to work or a Vodafone 4G modem. You just wouldn't be able to use it on a Telstra or Optus locked 4G modem.

    • +4

      Hotspot your second cheap phone

    • +1

I think they can tell if it's connected to a modem and they might not like that.

I've got mine connected to an older android device and connected to a router with an adapter.

    • +2

If the IMEI flags as a modem they may disable your service. The best option is to get a phone, put it in that & tether it to a router. I recommend any cheap phone & a Gl-inet router tethered through USB. I have done this with a Flint2 & it is flawless.

      • Thanks, I have a glinet travel router, I’ll test it on that with an old android with usb c to Ethernet tethering.

        • I've been doing exactly that for 2 years, no probs.

          • @Wardaddy: How do you charge the phone while tethering via usb?

            • @mikuno: The GL iNet charges the phone if you use USB to USB on the router. Just make sure you've got the USB settings done right.

              • @Wardaddy: Oh sweet thank you, I was using an Ethernet adapter earlier. I'll give the USB a go

  • +1

Pretty sure it roams onto the Optus network in regional areas so might get better Optus data speeds if in a regional area

    • +2

I live regionally and can confirm it's a night and day difference with the new Vodafone-Optus agreement.
For example, gigabit 5G speeds in Echuca, Victoria.

      • I'm assuming this is a direct Vodafone plan (not Felix, supposedly capped at 40Mbit/s)

        • Yeah, that's correct. Those speeds were on Vodafone Prepaid.

Just demonstrating that the Voda network has improved in the regions - Felix is just an unlimited version of that, capped at 40mbps download / 40mbps upload :)

  • Still waiting for them to announce increasing the speed cap. There were rumour a few months ago that they were sending out survey about it.

    • +4

I got it as a notification from the Felix App earlier today, and also, if you notice it is mentioned on their homepage now at felix.com.au

    • Still waiting?

      • The speed bump went over my head until I read the headline in my RSS feed reader.

  • The problem is that the speed is limited — I’m not sure if it can reach 20Mbps in my area.

    • It was upgraded to 40Mbps.

I'm not on Felix Mobile but on Kogan Mobile on the Vodafone network and i can easily reach over 40Mbps in my area but this is on their 4G network. Perhaps the 5G network is over saturated in your area.

  • +7

    My Personal Review

    • It works great when it works, and beats every competitor on the pricing
    • If you are a heavy phone/laptop internet user and keep on travelling then it is really really a must because it's a hassle to keep finding free WiFi networks
    • Simply great and the app is also far better than Vodafone or Telstra
    • Never had any call issues as such
  • -1

    Under the Vodafone network, right?

  • +5

not happy with reception, lot of drop out and black spot ( metro SE Melbourne)

  • +1

I had used them for a month (in CBD area) and the speeds were ridiculously slow. I'm not sure whether if it was poor reception but it was to the point where it wasn't functional. They do seem to have great customer service though but proceed with caution. I wouldn't consider this as an alternative for NBN.

  • +2

I switched to Felix a couple months ago after Belong put their prices up yet again. No complaints so far, and Vodafone seems to perform far better than Telstra Wholesale in very crowded locations like stadiums and shopping centres.

    • I moved from belong too, after they went from 15 to 25 dollars in a year. This seems like a solid option at the moment

  • +1

Woohoo! I knew this was coming

  • great… 40mb… :)will check the speed..

  • what cheap 2nd hand smart phone can handle multiple devices for tethering? I've got:
    a dozen smart lights
half a dozen smart power plugs
    multiple security cameras
    1 TV
    2+ laptops and smart phones

    • +1

Every phone out there I know of will freak out with 10+ devices tethered. Tethering modules are not designed to be a network router.

Get a Gl.inet router & use that for your network. USB tether it to a phone. I use a Flint 2 like this & it works great. Best part is if I want to sign up to an NBN supplier for a couple months because of a promo I dont need to change anything. Just plug in the NBN to the wan port & switch the WAN source. It can even auto failover if required.

Any Open WRT router can do it, but the Gl.inet ones are cheap for the quality & run out of the box.

    • For your sort of use why not get a cheap NBN plan and a wireless router? Even cheap NBN 25Mbps or 50Mbps plans will be miles more reliable and deliver the speed consistently over congested and potentially unreliable speeds with Felix wireless.

      • +1

because idiotic contractors and previous home owner allowed the HFC to be located in the room upstairs far away from everything else downstairs. Don't want to buy a mesh system

    • +2

Android restricts the number of tethered devices to 10, Apple iOS to 5. The best way is to USB tether to a router like others here said. It's been working just fine for me for 2 years. Make sure the phone has IPV.6 though, Felix switched from IPV.4 a few months ago. I use an old Moto G9 plus.
