I recall my grandma having a proton email address in the 90's.

  • @ Proton Mail

    Any positive reviews?

Yes, using Proton Mail has been a positively brilliant experience for me. Their commitment to privacy makes me feel fully charged with confidence that my information is safe. Their service is the nucleus of what secure email should be.

      Show me the way

Yeah keen to know if you have any better options. Going through the degoogling process atm and everything I read seems to say it's the best option bar hosting your own e-mail server and only communicating with users on their own self hosted e-mail servers.

      • There are alternatives.

Tutanota, startmail, Mailfence, Disroot, Posteo, countermail, Infomaniak (not the same but still privacy focused and can encrypt emails)

      • I tried proton but it wasn't fit for my needs (web based client replacement for legacy ISP email address after TMC bastardised the product).

Then i found fastmail, which has been pretty much great in every respect. As an old believer of 'don't pay for anything on the internet', i have become a happy paying customer of theirs.

        • I was a fastmail client as well. Very happy with them.

All of their servers are in USA.

      Proton Mail praises Trump

See an alternate view to the Reddit rabble
Andy's statement was to recognise the choice of the Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust division at DOJ. This is someone who has history of going after tech monopolies and allowing room for the little guys (startups) to have a fair chance to grow and innovate. This was not a political endorsement.

Also, clearly stated by Proton -

From time to time, Proton may be legally compelled to disclose certain user information to Swiss authorities, as detailed in our Privacy Policy. This can happen if Swiss law is broken. As stated in our Privacy Policy, all emails, files and invites are encrypted and we have no means to decrypt them. Under Article 271 of the Swiss Criminal Code, Proton may not transmit any data to foreign authorities directly, and we therefore reject all requests from foreign authorities. Swiss authorities may from time to time assist foreign authorities with requests, provided that they are valid under international legal assistance procedures and determined to be in compliance with Swiss law. In these cases, the standard of legality is again based on Swiss law. In general, Swiss authorities do not assist foreign authorities from countries with a history of human rights abuses

      Simply not true.

I truly appreciate the value of privacy and am happy to contribute, however, I find the price of AUD $4.09 per month to be a bit steep for my budget.

I was wondering if there might be any alternative plans available, or if the pricing differs by geographic region? Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Try infomaniak. I've been with them for about 3 years now, no issues whatsoever. They are very cheap and have been around for a very long time. https://www.infomaniak.com/en/ksuite/service-mail/prices

        • Indeed. Depending on what you value.

If you value your privacy and main focus is de-googling, this is a very good first step.

If you want total anonymity, this is not the way to go about it but also having a super-private email such as Tutanota will not provide you with that anonymity that you require. There is a whole range of things you need to do to achieve that and even then it's not easy to keep it up.

    • Do you happen to subscribe to Spotify or Youtube?

I’ve been using it for 9 months. I’m reasonably impressed although when I heard people complaining about bugs I figured it was just par for the course. People look for all sorts of trivial things to whine about. Then last night I went to empty my drafts folder for the first time (only had 5 emails in there) and after half a dozen attempts it just won’t do anything. I thought maybe I needed to hard delete them from my trash first, but nope. I waited till the next day while I was on a different computer and different network - same thing. So yeah some of the stories about this being a work in progress are definitely true.

    • Same thing happened to me today

    • Their support is pretty good, did you reach out?

  • +2

Was 60% off last black friday, I'll wait and see what this year's deal is.

    • Agreed, better to hold out and hope they offer longer than 12 months

  • Also worth noting, there are some weird features lacking on both iOS and android (particularly with calenders), but they are in the process of a full rewrite of the apps

  • Does Proton support a domain catch-all address?

    • The Mail Plus plan does, that's what I use it for.

  • New Mail Plus users only, can't extend existing plan.
