Scroll down on the deal link to "Get the best trade-up value on iPhone 17 or iPhone Air"

Buy any iPhone 17 or iPhone Air model between 12 Sep and 10 Oct, then trade in an eligible phone to get $300 bonus credit on top of the value of your phone. Plus, if you get a better value Trade-In quote between buying your new iPhone and within 21 days of receiving it, we’ll match it.
You need to be a Telstra Personal or Small Business customer with an active mobile service to be eligible to both trade up and make a value-match claim.

Copying detailed analysis from the JB deal commented here.

Managed to go in one of the stores today, here's what the Telstra rep shared which might or might not work differently online as opposed to instore:

  • Both Trade in & $300 Bonus offer works on outright purchase
  • BUT both Trade in and Bonus offer only allowed if you have a valid Telstra ID with an active Post Paid Service
  • The straightaway refused to do on JB Mobile plans, actually the tone changed when I brought the JB convo, "They are a separate company from us!!"
  • Bonus offer is only applicable on preorders before 19th, basically by EOBD tomorrow if doing in person
  • The trade in value needs to be locked in by tomorrow but you can return your device anytime in the next 30 days
  • [Rep seemed a bit confused on this one] The Trade in value would be reimbursed to you in your Bank Account after you trade in at a later date
  • I'm assuming based on the above point that we have to originally pay the full device amount which is fair
  • The $300 Bonus will also be sent to the **Bank Account*
  • The trade in value might depreciate after launch, they can't guarantee that which indicated that we only have until tomorrow to get the most benefit out of this offer

Based on this information I asked if I can do it on a new service since I'm already locked into JB plan from a previous GC deal and she understood the intent and suggested that the cheapest plan available at the moment is their "Starter Plan" if I remember the name correctly which is for $50 and I can signup, use for 1 month and before the end of the month end the service without any lock in contract. Now I couldn't find the $50 plan with a quick search on their website so that might just be an instore plan.

So based on this I think these are the numbers for an example that we can use to make the decision if its worth the hassle or not against the JB deal:

Example:

iPhone 15 Pro 128 GB no major damage but simple scratches (arguably not "As new" condition)

JB HiFi:
  • Trade-In value: $745
  • Trade-In Bonus: $100
  • Total Off: $845

On top of this you can stack Jb HiFi GCs to pay off the remaining balance with ~10% off if you have any so approx:

  • Total Off with GC: 960.5 ($845 + ~$115.5 for base iPhone 17 Pro)
Telstra:
  • Telstra Trade-In value: $710
  • Monster Trade In Value (As New): $830 -> I doubt anyone qualifies for this YMMV
  • Monster Trade In Value (Working): $790 -> More realistic -> Telstra hopefully matches this
  • Trade-In Bonus: $300
  • Total Off: $1090
  • Hassle to Benefit:
    ** With JB GC: $129.5
    ** Without JB GC: $245

This diminishes if you're getting a new $50 plan just for the first month:

  • Total Off: $1040
  • Hassle to Benefit without an active service already:
    ** With JB GC: $79.5
    ** Without JB GC: $195

Is it worth the hassle of going in store, subscribing to a new plan, waiting for the phone to be delivered (which it seems Telstra is notorious for not being able to track) and then finally cancelling the service after a month? That's a question we can think about tonight haha.

  • Any Phone

    Not any phone unfortunately.

    • is it restricted to certain phones? I might've missed the terms, I could select both Apple and Android phones.

      • I think Lizard means only phones on their list.
Example: Pixel 10 is not there

        • Sure! I've updated it to "Eligible" phones

  • Trade-in Any Phone for Bonus $300 Trade-in Coupon

    📱 ???

  • I think the trade in value will be credited to the Telstra account as per the Telstra page T&C which will be visible on the next bill, that means you have to keep the Telstra plan, so it means it will be little bit expensive, because if we will be on Telstra postpaid plan each ,month you will end up paying a min of $50, but if it was bank account, then it could be a catch, and again the website T&C says,

"Get the best trade-up value on iPhone 17 or iPhone Air
Buy any iPhone 17 or iPhone Air model between 12 Sep and 10 Oct, then trade in an eligible phone to get $300 bonus credit on top of the value of your phone. Plus, if you get a better value Trade-In quote between buying your new iPhone and within 21 days of receiving it, we’ll match it.

As I mentioned in the post, the Telstra rep shared that both the trade in value and bonus offer will be credited to our bank accounts and also:

    • Telstra Trade-In is managed by Assurant Services Australia Pty Ltd. To be eligible for Telstra Trade-In, you must be a Telstra consumer or small business customer aged 18+, with a post-paid service and have a device, tablet or smartwatch with us on an Upfront plan or with an existing 13-digit account number. Not available to customers with a ten-digit account number or Upgrade & Protect. Devices on Telstra Mobile Lease plans are ineligible. You may only trade in a device, tablet or smartwatch from Assurant’s list of eligible devices. The credit offer will vary depending on your device, tablet or smartwatch type, model and its working condition, and is subject to assessment. Credit applied by second bill, or to a nominated credit/debit card within 30 days for Upfront Mobile plans.

I do wonder if you could simply cancel the plan after the 2nd month and request a refund of the credit balance.

      • r u sure that this will work ?????

In the past I’ve received 5-6 extra iPhones because Telstra supply chain and customer service is so bad. They would assume I never for the phone or sent 2 of them and had no way for me to return them after I contacted them.

      Telstra psyops right here

yeah its credit not money in the bank so only really appeals to telstra customers

"Once we receive your device, we’ll apply credit to your account by your next bill or the one after."

    • As I mentioned in the post, the Telstra rep shared that both the trade in value and bonus offer will be credited to our bank accounts which I confirmed again as well and also:

      • Going by last year there was actually a mix of results here, a few over at Whirlpool reporting they received the initial trade in value into their bank, while the $300 bonus was applied to their account. In the past however I've been able to get Telstra to pay out any such account credits to my bank. Though I haven't had to do this since moving from their old Siebel system. YMMV

      • If we give them the trade in device on the spot while doing the trade in, can they deduct the trade in value and bonus from the outright phone price? Or it will still be paid to the bank account in 30 days?

        • +2

No, trade in value cant be used to deduct outright cost. It'll be paid to your preferred payment method/credited on your bill.

  • Anyone calculated what's the difference trading in a 15 PM 256 GB?

  • Seems JB Hifi is more hassle free.

Not worth that much of my time on this similar discount rate.

  • Best deal is to keep your 15 pro and get a battery replacement when needed. The upgrade is so not worth it now that we have certainly gone past the sweet spot, it’s gonna be diminishing returns for a while.

    • Agreed. Dunno why you'd swap a 15 Pro for a 17 and pay the difference. Not a substantial upgrade

  • this or kogan 200$ gc + 20$ off deal ?

  • Do I need to register the Telstra trade in before 19th (which will start the 21 day device return counter) for the $300 bonus?

Or just pre-order iPhone 17 then once I have that register the trade in at that time and still get $300 bonus?

Don’t want to end up stuck waiting for a delayed preorder!

    • +1

Read the original post, it has the answer to your question

  • Anyone figure out what Telstra define as an ‘Eligible Phone’ yet?

    • Ones included in the list when you go through the trade in process

  • I'm confused by this

Telstra website states: "Buy any iPhone 17 or iPhone Air model between 12 Sep and 10 Oct, then trade in an eligible phone to get $300 bonus credit"

Deal states: "Bonus offer is only applicable on preorders before 19th" and "trade in value needs to be locked in by tomorrow"

Please ELI5, I'm obviously missing something

    • +1

Nah you're alright, the confusion is stemming from conflicting information between online info and what was shared to me by the Telstra rep as they clearly mentioned that bonus offer is only on preorders and also suggested that the Trade in value they are offering at the moment is bound to be decreased after tomorrow.

But as you mentioned online deal states You buy an iPhone between 12 sep and 10 oct, "then" trade in to receive a $300 bonus. I didn't know what to believe so I shared verbatim what the Telstra rep told me. Might be a good idea to ask a chat support rep and take screenshots if planning to wait.

      • Thanks that makes heaps of sense!

What if the pre ordered phone takes longer than 30 days to arrive and you miss the deadline to send in the trade in as a result? Do you know if the pre order can be cancelled.

        • Good question, I asked that as well, and the rep said that in that case they'll allow us more time and honour the locked in trade in value along with the offer because they understand you'd need to use your existing phone up until the new one arrives. I hope they don't go back on their word later.

@ozjudas: I've just done a web chat with Telstra and they stated that ETA is 5-7 business days from launch date.

When quizzed about delays due to stock levels they seemed pretty adamant that the 5-7 day ETA was accurate, and I would have enough time to return the trade in.

I quizzed them more and they seemed to deny the possibility of extenuating circumstances delaying the delivery.

Thanks for the credit and for posting this! I was actually planning to head to the Telstra store today to check it out, but I guess I don't need to now — haha!

  • +2

Just went instore and have a chat with one of the Telstra team, they advised that the Trade in with bonus 300$ will be up until 10 Oct.
so you have plenty of time.

  • Anyone know whether there is walk in stock available for in-store purchases? I've got my preorder with Apple but looking to do this instead as the trade in prices are great.

  • +3

    Just went through this process today at my local Telstra store, here's how it went;

Walked in and asked to pre order the 17 with the $300 bonus. Was told I need to be on an upfront plan, the rep offered me the cheapest plan (Upfront small) for $30 a month, which I took seeing as my current pre-paid plan ends in 2 weeks and I need to port out anyway. He then told me that I need to stay on this plan until I get credited the trade-in money and bonus $300, which could take anywhere from 1-3 months according to him. After which i was told I can cancel my plan and have the credit paid out to my card/bank account.

    For reference, I traded in a 13 pro 128gb for $670 and bought the 256gb iPhone 17.

    • upfront small? is it on Telstra website? or it is the rep special offer? and how long the plan is for $30/m, 2yrs, 3yrs or……can you provide some more details?

      • I can’t seem to find it online, so it must be something that’s in store only with a rep, he gave me the critical summary and everything.

It’s a month to month plan, $30/m. No lock in contract. The rep told me to pay monthly then actually recommended that I cancel the plan once I get the trade in and bonus credit, unless I wanted to stay on it of course.

        Hope that helps.

        • Thanks heaps…didnt know telstra rep would do something like this

    • So worst case scenario would be 3 months waiting for trade in credit: $300 - $90 = $210 better off than Jb Hi-Fi bonus $100 deal.
I'm also looking at trading 13 pro 256gb, JB Hi-Fi would be $525 and Telstra would be $620 taking into account the 3 months waiting. $95 difference really.

    • I managed to find the upfront small plan on their website: https://www.telstra.com.au/internet/data-plans

      • -1

So data plan, not mobile plan.

        • -1

This is from their trade in terms.

Am I eligible for Telstra Trade-In?
To be eligible for Telstra Trade-In you must:

          • be 18 years and over
          • be a current consumer or small business customer with Telstra
          • have a post-paid service
          • have a phone, tablet or smartwatch on an Upfront plan or with an existing 13-digit account number
            NOT have Upgrade & Protect

Where does it say you need a mobile plan?

          • @Stride2b: Just saying it’s not mobile plan. Did I say anything about it’s not eligible? :))
