Mileage Accumulation Credit Cards for Travel

I used Virgin Velocity points card since the last two years accumulating substantial points.

At the end, when I tried booking my tickets, I found that the I need pay additional $ on top of redeeming all my points. When I searched for tickets to the same destination (Sydney from Melbourne), the tickets are of the same price on Virgin without redeeming the points. I am feeling that these points are worthless.

What is OzBargain's choice of good credit cards that can help accumulating points for a future travel?

    Milage

    Mileage

    • :-) From a dictionary

The correct and standard spelling is "mileage," which refers to the number of miles traveled, fuel efficiency, or metaphorically, the usefulness obtained from something. "Milage" is a rarely used and generally considered incorrect variant, although some dictionaries list it as a minor or variant spelling.

Yes points are generally useless for domestic travel esp in economy. If your goal is to fly domestic, pay cash and be done with it.

Bang for your buck is long haul business or first but securing these kind of seats in 2025 is difficult. The heyday of reward business and first class travel, ime, is over.

If you are flexible in travel there are still some seats out there. The big problem is trying to get two on the same flight.

I have been in the points game for over 20 years now and always plan trips around the award seats I can book, and never the other way around. We have been fortunate to have flown over 50 sectors in long-haul first class and many more long-haul flights in business. Getting two seats pre-COVID was relatively easy ( (why I call it the heyday's) given our flexibility (we managed to secure 4 seats in F once with our friends, and also another time with my parents), but also that airlines were still flying 747s, A380s or even had F cabins - not like today, where many airlines have removed first, and created glorified business suites. Flying first is a completely different experience from any business experience. My next flights are booked at Qatars A380 in F so excited to experience our 7th A380 carrier :)

        • With points we did Qatar QSuites over to Europe last year and we did me Emirates First and the man business from Dubai to Sydney. We spent 15 hours in the First Class lounge in Dubai, by choice. Yes, First class is the bomb. Was a total eye opener. We are now considering one person flying first and stomping up for a business ticket if we have to in the future. The lounge experience was the cherry on top.

          • @try2bhelpful: I didn't really like the EK F Lounge in Dubai, as it felt oversized to me (it basically occupies the entire concourse). For intimacy, I like the SQ's The Private Room, where it felt exclusive, but my favourite lounge IME is the Lufthansa First Class Terminal, yep Terminal. Have you tried this FCT before? If not, being able to complete security, immigration at the FCT, having your personal assistant assist you in the terminal means you just relax and chill. When it is time for boarding and you don't need to check, your assistant will come and find you and then take via elevator to the tarmac where your own Porsche or Mercedes car will drive you directly to the awaiting plane, that's priceless. Glad there are so many options that cater to your and each of our personal taste :) Happy flying :)

            • @TheMindsetTraveller: Sounds really cool. This was our first time with First class and it was pretty amazing. It was a pity they didn’t have a better setup for a nap in the lounge. Sounds like you’ve had some great experiences.

Interestingly enough when we were boarding the Emirates flight they separated the men and women for a security check and I thought “here we go” but the men got a thorough going over and the lady security guard just asked us if we had any liquids.

              Happy travels yourself.

I think it is a bit like cashback sites.
I use them to get a little extra on purchase I would make anyway.
I will buy stuff with a credit card anyway, so I might as well get points.
If we are planning a trip, I'll look up redemptions. Occasionally there is an opportunity to book a business class ticket for points that is not much more expensive than economy. Usually there isn't.

If I have too many points I can redeem them for gift cards

Carrier and fuel surcharges are things you would've been paying anyway. Velocity is somewhat better value stocked up and transferred to Krisflyer for international travel, as Singapore Airlines doesn't impose fuel surcharges. Emirates is the complete opposite where you'll pay dearly in surcharges for booking with points.

Fastest way to earn points is churning. Not just credit cards, but private health insurance, Citi Ready Credit and the occasional home loan refinance. With banks increasing wait periods from 12 to 18/24 months, credit card churning is also getting less lucrative every year.

Didn't know we earn points churning PHI?

Bupa gives Everyday Rewards points, which you can funnel into Qantas Points. There's one right now: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/920213

HCF is the same with Flybuys. Medibank gave Velocity points with 6 weeks free last time.
