New Models

Dyson has released 4 new floor cleaners, however I'll only cover the more maintstream stick vacuum units here. New models are:

  • V16 Piston
  • V9 Submarine
  • V8 Cyclone
  • Pencilvac
Discontinued/removed from core Models
  • Gen5 Outsize
  • V12 Detect Slim
  • V10
TLDR

If looking for the top performing Dyson cord-free stick vacuum, I'd recommend skipping the V16 for the Gen5 - at least until longer-term reliability becomes clear.
If looking for a lightweight, cheaper unit that performs well for spot cleaning, take a look at the new V8 Cyclone.

Considerations * Capacity misleading Dyson are factoring dust compression. * Was up-rated from 185AW at some point ** Can support DLS with Digital Motorbar head upgrade * No suction while using the submarine head, should vacuum first.
Summary/Recommendation/ Upgrade path Recommend not buying until reliability clear. New bin design removes cyclone from bin, causing excessive dust in the filter compartment. All floors Cones head doesn't clean as well on any floors as the dedicated hardfloor and carpet heads of the Gen 5, annoyingly leaves a line of dirt in the middle. New inbuilt crevice tool on unit & wand make all previous tools incompatible. Consider when discounted for higher suction, runtime and button operation. Cyclone in bin appears to avoid issue of dust buildup in filter compartment experienced by V16. Combo of Digital Motorbar (carpet) & fluffy Optic (hardfloor) heads is much more effective at cleaning all floor types than V16's "All Floors Cones Sense" head. Consider when steeply discounted for higher suction, capacity, runtime on LCD over V8 Cyclone. Basically a V12 body with less suction, a trigger, no auto suction. Best value Dyson stick vacuum available, addition of higher suction, better runtime, click-in battery and Medium power makes much more compelling than its predecessor. Do not buy, get the cheaper, more powerful V8 Cyclone. 2 power modes and screwed-in battery means you'll need to buy a replacement eventually & can't hot-swap to extend runtime.
Non-Core/Discontinued Gen5 Outsize V11 Outsize V10 V7 Advanced V7

Fluffy Head No Yes* No No No
RRP (as of 20/09/2025) $1,649 N/A $1,099 $599 N/A
Considerations * Either original soft roller or laser slim fluffy head * 60 mins with no floor head. Good luck getting that IRL.
Summary/Recommendation/ Upgrade path Too heavy, save your money and get a smaller, lighted model which you will use more, your arms will thank me. Not available new anymore, if wanting to upgrade, consider Gen5 (smaller model) or combo of V8 Cyclone and a corded Miele lol. Do not buy, the V10 is Dyson's least reliable model from experience. Save some money and buy a V7 Cyclone instead. It's a V8 with less parts. Skip unless in the $3XX range and get a V8 Cyclone instead. Do not buy

hm never knew I needed or wanted to read this but I did so thank you.

still using old dyson hand held still works just fine but only 20 mins battery (5 mins on turbo). replaced battery once with original was fair price yes they still sell them. they recycle the old battery as well postage paid so that was nice and easy to take care of.

  • Thanks Anthro, great information. I've been using this to consider which vacuum to upgrade our old (2018) V8 which is still going strong but a swappable battery would be nice for the car. I had my eye on the V12 for a long time, as the other models were simply too heavy for my wife. But now that it's discontinued (thanks for letting me know), it looks like the V8 cyclone is the go-to. Then saw that there haven't been any deals on it on ozbargain, and from a search online it seems it was literally released a few days ago.

A note to mention though - The V8 cyclone is $649, and the V8 (2022) model has been as low as $299 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/914275. So even though the cyclone is superior, to many the old V8 might present much better value when on sale.

I'll be hodling out for black friday sales and will be keen to pull the trigger if the V8 cyclone gets a generous discount!

  • Dyson naming scheme still a complete mess…
