Lexar NM790 4TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD $331.55 + Delivery ($0 to Metro/ mVIP/ NSW C&C) @ Mwave

750

Ozbargains favorite drive is on sale again
Lexar NM790 4TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD - LNM790X004T-RNNNG
i just paid $331.55+ paypal fees, with free deliver, no fees with zip / bank transfer, but given:

Be aware of Mwave - Mwave Has Been Placed into Administration and Acquired by digiDirect
with that I think given they are still trading it should be fine.

I paid with CC and paypal - should be enough protection, and hopefully waranty should be OK with Lexar, Chris?

thought this was a fantastic deal given:

"wafers just went up another 20%. Most brands still have stock for Q4, so you’ll see some deals before year’s end — I’ll run some too, but think of it as the “last dance.” By late Q1 2026, prices will climb fast."

so unsure if we will get better thank this. but 331 is a cracking price.

  • what's a good cheap heatsink for these for ps5? does it make any difference for performance which heatsink I buy?

    • +1

You don't even need a heatsink.

    • +1

Jonsbo m.2 heatsink for about $5 on aliexpress works & fits in the PS5.

    • I am actually quite angry that many of our resellers didn't stock our heatsink…

Hitting table& Nein nein nein nein nein!!!

    • +5

what would you recommend then at the same price mark?

    • +13

Lliterally doesn't matter for 99 % of people.

    • +2

This is a fantastic TLC drive , I am sure the 4tb model has 5 year 4000tbw warranty which is higher than the majority out there

    • +6

I have two more of these and today buying the third one. Absolutely fantastic drives. Highly recommended.

    • -1

      for offline pr0n, who cares.

    • It’s really only required for write intensive database or AI workloads

      • I bought this for AI, unless your training, it's probably going to make 10ths of a second difference. . But yeah more pronounced if you are…

      • +3

Huh, gaming use definately doesn't require DRAM on the SSD - it's one use case where you can use any old random drive. There's barely a difference in load times between the fastest and slowest modern SSDs.

      • +3

Lol. They're literally perfect drives for game drives and ps5 extra storage. Whatchu talkin bout Willis?

I've got one as my steam drive. Have had it for a year+ no issues. New build I have a dramless 990 Evo plus 1tb and haven't noticed any issue using it as boot either vs my old 970 Evo 250gb.

I was skeptical, to be fair, I prefer dram for my windows boot drive but ultimately it's made no difference whatsoever.

  • +2

    I own this.. been great.

  • Bought one, thanks OP.

  • Legend, thanks OP!

  • +3

First 4TB ssd that I put in one of my laptops. Two years on and its still working (for now lol), the main use of the laptop has been as a portable video encoder (handbrake ftw) and also ripping my 4k and bluray media purchases.

  • How would this go for as an exclusively games drive? Would DRAM matter?

    • +3

      Totally fine even overkill.

TB/$ is pretty much unmatched though.

    • +1

Even Evo SSD 2.5s are fine for that

  • What would be it's nearest competitor with on-board DRAM?

    • +2

      Something that costs 30-40% more

      • Think they had the 990 pro for about 400 and something, right?

        • +1

I'd still buy NM790 especially for a laptop. 990 pro has plagued with issues, nm790 is proven to be great and runs a lot cooler.

        • got mine for 310 from Samsung

        • That makes sense. I'd just buy whatever is cheaper between the two drives 790 and 990 Pro. For me, they're equivalent in value all things considered. If you can get Samsung 990 pro for $310, then that's obviously the better choise. But if both are around the same price, I'd personally go with 790 as it's well proven it's capabilities so far in my use cases so I'm comfortable with the drive.

  • Would this be a good buy to make an external drive and if so any recommendations for a matching case? Damn I just bought a Silicon Power PX10 2TB today.

    Thanks

    • I use it as an external drive and it's been fabulous, but make sure you buy the fastest available enclosure

      • What did you get? So hard to find a reasonable priced 40gpbs enclosure.

        • +2

I got the Orico one as well (i think I put TB4 in the description - thunderbolt 4). They are a bit expensive but it'll be worth it if you are to tap into (almost) full speed of the drive

    • +1

I use one as an external with an Orico 10Gbps enclosure, and I've been very happy with it.

  • I was checking this out yesterday, as I need to populate my Beelinik ME mini NAS. How does this compare to WD Blue SN5000 4TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe? It's currently $345 at CentreCom.

    • +4

Nm790 is better. Just a bonus that it is cheaper

    • +1

4TB SN5000 use QLC, just ignore it.

    • +1

SN5000 is a 5500/5000 kind of low speed gen4, our is 7K full speed gen4, not even on the same level

      • Yes, true. My question was in the context of using these in Beelinik ME mini NAS, which only supports PCIE 3.0. :) The Lexar one is probably is an overkill in this case, but I still purchased 2 to start with…

  • Any good deals for 2tb of this or any 2.5" ssd? Needing something as a usb disk.

  • Have been waiting for a decent sale on a 4tb. Is this as cheap as a quality 4tb will get, or is there likely to be decent sales towards the end of the year?

  • +1

Long time not seen cracking prices on SSDs and HDDs since Amazon deals 3 years ago …

  • +5

Wow I'm really glad I picked this up a couple of years ago for $239, and based off Chris comment it's going to keep going up.. I'd trust what he says.. as he helped me decide to buy before the last price spike

    • I've been really regretting not buying it back then for a game drive or similar :(

It also shows how some of the old commenters are delusional, saying wait for $200 lol

    • +1

bro, do you know how much will power I need in order to keep talking politely to those who called me using "scare tactics" to sell drives on Ozbargain…

I have to keep telling myself "you are not using your own account"

      • It's their loss if they choose to believe that. The few of us who listened benefitted massively and for that we are grateful.
My 4tb drive doing wonders in my itx PC. It's a top quality drive as well.
Wasn't sure what to expect but was a great SSD. All my mates missed out when I purchased it as well as they were all waiting lol.

YMTC is going to build a foundry, hoping to capture more market share at the end of 2026.
There are only two things happenning that I can see to really bring SSD price down to 2023 level.
one is this AI thing became the biggest IT bubble in the history.

the other is YMTC break free from sanctions and keep expanding for next 2-3 years.
When YMTC starts to compete in the wafer market again, price will come down.

  • wow. What happened? Isn't the all time low just a tad under $300?
edit: actually under $250, thanks to above post.
Perhaps partially thanks to the weakening USD.

  • Bought 2. Hopefully it's good for ZFS system on RAID1 in QNAP NAS.

  • thanks OP, bought 2. have waited a long time to catch the fabled ozbargain favourite ssd!

    • Thanks for your business sir

  • +1

Got one. Anyone recommend a not too expensive external case that will run closer to full speed?

    • Also wondering this. To be used on both Mac and PC / USB C. USB A would also be useful for my older machines.

        @bargsbargsbargs @sjobeck
I have two based on the ASM2464PD that cost about ~80 bucks each (KSY Maiwo K1695 and Hagibis UD1101) and they work OK, but are quite inefficient- ie. running relatively hot and consuming several watts even while idle (this is apparently due to issues with the Asmedia chipset having poor support for the power-saving modes included in the TB3/USB4 specification and/or something about getting the enclosed drives to enter their higher SSD-sleep states).

For use as a USB thumbdrive either of the above would be OK, but for something you plan to leave attached to a PC (and myself personally if I were buying one today regardless) then I would go with this:
        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007907165657.html
It runs slightly slower (peak read speed of the JHL7440 is ~2.6-2.8GB/s vs. the ~3.1-3.8GB/s of the ASM2464 for example), and it is more expensive than either of the aforementioned, but draws something like ~1/2 as much power so with Aus electricity prices being what they are (especially Adelaide) the difference would kind of pay itself off over time.

  • Been holding out for months one of these at this price before caving and getting Samsung 990 Pro 4tb for about $380 after cashback. Oh well I'm all setup at least

    • Looking for one for my new gaming pc, will either do?

  • Would this be a good drive to run Windows 11 within a laptop? It will be the 'main' drive'

    • Yep.

  • Would this be a good choice to edit 4k videos on on mac?

    • depending on your mac, if it's got a 2280 NVME port supports gen4 speed, this is a great choice, otherwise it's a overkill

      • I'm using the 14inch m4 macbook pro.

        • Your SSD and Ram are both soldered on the motherboard and not upgradable.
so you can only buy this and put on a USB enclosure

          • @Lexar ANZ Chris: I understand that. I'm wondering if I'm using thunderbolt 4 to connect this to my mac, editing 4k videos would be possible or are the speeds on the ssd a bit of a bottleneck.

  • +1

Yes…it's Australian stock, warranty is standard.
