Just got the U7 1TB Version of this. Apart from battery life it's great, definitely a big improvement from initial reviews.
If you don't want to take it apart and need 1TB the upgrade is also available:

Let me save you the trouble.
Is this still available? Lowest price?

      • Yep I love when I respond with my lowest price and then they low-ball further

        • I usually respond with "highest offer?"

  • +3

No idea how it performs but for this price might as well give it a try.

Shockingly well, Intel has really optimised the Arc drivers. I was sceptical but it can sometimes keep pace with the Rog Ally, and sometimes beat it. For example I'm playing Witcher 3 and RDR2 at near 60fps with balanced upscaling 1080p.

      • The U5 version?

        • +1

I have the U7, however note that the only difference between the two processers is 2 more P-cores (and very minor 50mhz clock boosts). This actually draws power away from the iGPU so some guides recommend disabling it down to 4P+4E+1LP cores. Personally I use 6P+4E+1LP out of the possible 6P/8E/2LP but it really depends on the games. I've tried the 4P+4E+1LP config and found that performance was near identical, so I prefer 6P for general system snappiness.
Edit: there's actually also 8MB more L3 cache but this is a minor upgrade since the CPU is almost always throttled by the iGPU before the extra cache makes a difference.

    Product not available.

    • Wow, I legit purchased one 2 minutes ago. Sold out a lot faster than I expected.

  • +2

Great deal, shame it sold out fast.

    • 1TB is still available!

  • How are these for emulation? Mostly PS2, GC, Dreamcast era

    • Surprisingly pretty good emulation - https://youtu.be/VJI5DHBIvuA?feature=shared

    • PS2 and under can be done on Android handhelds around the 200 mark. This would be overkill, but, overkill never hurts in this context.

      • Any tips for a cheap racing sim player.
Say rfactor 2 to project cars 2 generation?

        • +1

I know Project Cars is a game lol. I got no clue brother, sorry. I had like a corded 15 buck steering wheel and pedals in my PS1 20 odd years ago, that's my limit.

        • You can run Assetto Corsa off a potato. I've run it off an old PC with no GPU. It wasn't great but it was a free PC.

      • This is cheaper than a lot of handheld Android devices as well.

        • +1

Yes the high end ones. Plenty of low end ones that can play PS2/GC etc.

          • @serpserpserp: You're right. I think at $400, it's a pretty decent deal though. I'm more of a steam deck user, can't go to handheld windows after quick resume on SteamOS.

            • @Eldeng20: I'd buy one at $400. But probably put something else but windows on it if possible. Maybe Bazzite if it works on this well

  • Damn it .. missed it :(

lol so there was 1 stock item?

FWIW, reducing CPU clocks and limiting power using something little Throttlestop will make the battery last longer with no real performance impacts (the default BIOS settings are way too generous on the CPU for no good reason).

If someone is interested, lookup undervolting (your laptops / handhelds) for further details

I currently run mine with cores and hyperthreading disabled which helps with idle battery life. The issue is it can only be dropped to 20W in MSI Settings, so at best 2 hours+ battery life when gaming (when accounting for screen/speakers etc). I also tried Motion Assistant from GPD to lower the max wattage limits: hollow knight was unstable until 15W (didn't hit 60fps till then). So realistically 20W is the lowest you can run it to supply enough power to the CPU and iGPU.

  • damn missed it

  • man this was a good deal……..sad i missed out

    • Are you using it as a shoe?
