Anyone Successfully Sold a Domain Name?

Registered a domain name last year to test email setups, it's coming up for renew and was just going to let it lapse.

Got an idea to sell it, and if successful the proceed can help to pay for the domain name in use. But it's kind of late, don't think it can be sold quickly, that means have to pay for a year renew at least. It's $36 to renew with GoDaddy or $15 transfer to Crazy Domains. But to list on GoDaddy marketplace such as their auction site or seller platform then the domain name would have to be registered through GoDaddy.

It's a short .com domain name, probably worth something to the right people or business. $100+ would be happy, more the merrier.

I've sold a few. If the value is over $1,000 I would recommend using a broker, or just listing it for whatever price and telling the interested buyer to buy if they want it.

If old mate is hesitating over a $36 renewal then it's probably not worth anywhere near that much.

      • Man I pay thousands a year in renewals. It's actually a bit of a drag.

        • Same

          • @Far Cough: What are your domains used for? ecommerce?

            • -1

@Brick50: I use them all, almost all, for affiliate sites so they make money in the meantime before I figure out what to do with them. Sometimes people message me begging to buy one. Other times I see little future in one so list it on a marketplace for a few hundred bucks.

            • @Brick50: email domains now.
              Python scripts
              LLMs
              AI scripts

  • contact companies who may be in that industry or niche. offer to them first.

if no interest may not be worth your effort.

otherwise let it lapse, re register somewhere else for like $1 introductory offer most companies offer on new domains.

    • If you let it lapse a squatting company will probably scoop it up automatically and squat the domain for a few years, or even indefinitely.

    Of course they have :)

Is it a name anyone is interested in? Generally if a .com name is free, its normally meh for resale as all the scum buy up everything for resale if it is half interesting.

Let it go, not worth the hassle for those prices. Plus I doubt you'll see it before you have pay the renewal fees.

  • Yes. I sold "lsand.com" for thousands

  • I’ve sold 11, mainly privately where I allow a transfer out after the payment is made.
One was through a broker as it was for $7k

  • Any brokers that people recommend using? Or where to list them?

  • I sold the domain name: "I-will-eat-3-kilos-of-dogsh%t-for-1-million-dollars .com"

There was great demand for this specific domain name. The top tech companies engaged in a bidding war and I got $1 billion for it.

  • Somehow I felt domain names aren't as popular as 10 years ago, making selling domain name at a good price tougher these days.

    • There are a lot more top-level domains these days so buyers are flooded with choices
    • Internet is a lot more centralised now around big social media platforms

Sold a AAAN.net domain (where AAA is a popular 3-level acronym and N is a number) 3 years ago for under US$1k through a broker, and I had that domain previously for almost 15 years. Or maybe I just didn't know what I was doing…
