I've been hunting for a good, but not too good gaming laptop for traveling overseas next year. Starting with this mid range to see how often I actually use it.

Reasons why it's a good deal for me:

  • The 5070 isn't much better than the 5060, both are only 8GB VRAM, better going 5070ti or 5080 if you want something more serious.
  • OLED Gsync screen is awesome, went to Officeworks to check it out in person.
  • 32GB RAM & 1TB SSD at this price point can be rare.
  • Not too big like a 17" and not too small for my now old man eyes, fairly light and small too.
  • Looks good and not 'plastic and gamer-ey'.
  • $1 monitor and laptop backpack, will probably just sell them off on marketplace.

Note: the marketing picture down the page says IPS screen, but if you click the PDF specs you can see the OLED, also when I ordered the order says OLED.
You also need to tick the $1 screen and $1 laptop backpack when you check out.

    Whats the weight?

    • +2

Models with OLED panel Around 2.3 kg (5.07 lbs)

In person felt quite fine, but it was also strapped to security thing.

OLED slightly lighter than the IPS ones.

      • Ohh thats heavy. Yoga for me to go

        • What yoga are you thinking of going with?
its too heavy for me as well.

          • @tjea: 7i. Thats not heavy, the 16".

If u want little gaming go for 9i. Thats expensive but no HDMI port.

        • Legions typically are weighty. Trade-off for gaming on the go. There are lighter ones out there but they also make your wallet comparably lighter.

Do these still come with the heavy power brick, thats far worse.

          • +1

@tm32: The Yoga would be more business style laptop for sure, this laptop comes with 245w charger which is a bit lighter than the 300w the 5070ti etc comes with!

This laptop is actually on the lighter side compared to other 16" gaming laptops.

To get something lighter with 5060, you'd be going Zephyrus which is ~$1500 more even on sale:
            https://rog.asus.com/au/laptops/rog-zephyrus/rog-zephyrus-g1…

        • +1

Dont forget this will also come with a very beefy power prick so add that to your weight calculations as well :)

          So its very heavyyyyyy!

Picked a similar model up recently (5060, 512GB SSD, 16GB Ram) it hasn't skipped a beat. Lenovo Customer Support has however skipped a beat. Triplicate charge on my card and they've been absolutely useless following it up.

If you have access to their education store I'm pretty sure this is the same model too as OP's here for $2141.10 +2 for the Monitor and Bag, however no cashback via this method

I also did a live chat and asked for a better price and got about $50 off from what I recall

    • which one did you get? I possibly would of gone the non pro but found that there isn't gsync on the non pro at this price point, that and i thought the extra inch on screen might help me see things when gaming!

  • +1

Would the mobile 5060 be ok for editing video with Da Vinci Resolve or should I look at something beefier?

    • depends on what you are doing. Normal video editing should work well enough where you aren't waiting for things to render, playback at high resolution and fps might not be snappy and fusion work won't be very smooth, but overall it should be okay

  • I want one and this is a good price

  • Or wait for black Friday?

  • @leighzor which officeworks did you see it in person?

    • went to the Cranbourne store, it was a slightly different spec but similar enough to see if you vibe with it.

a lot of the retail stores have last gen stuff still on display (4060 / 4070 etc.) which is a shame

      • Thank you

  • Massive fan of 16inch screens. Awesome on laptops.

    • I have a lenovo 16 inch 4060 and it rocks. So this one is going to be my upgrade for sure

  • +2

Really hope they bring an update of the Slim 5 14 to their line again.

  • +1

    Only a 5060?

For that price you'd hope for a 5070. 5060 going to be so limiting.

The 5060 is about the same as a 4070, and my legion 5 4070 laptop only cost me 2k several years ago.

    • +1

And the 5070 isn’t limiting? The 8gb is the limiting factor here. A 5070 is like a 10fps boost at best.

      • Yeah I agree, 8gb is the problem. Need to go for at least the 5070 Ti to get more vram. I've got the 3070 Legion 5 Pro and I ain't upgrading until I can get at least 16gb vram.

        • I'm waiting for a deal on the 5070 12gb. Maybe Blackfriday

  • Does it have thunderbolt 4?

  • +6

To all the clowns saying bad deal. The screen is what makes it good. Yes its not a fricken 5090ti like ya'll want. But a great low-mid tier gaming laptop thats affordable with great visuals (screen)

    • +5

my thoughts exactly, these lads out here wanting the cheapest feeling laptop they can find with a 5080/5090 and 1080p IPS

    • The screen is the selling point for sure

    • That is true, the OLED is a nice addition

  • +1

great find op! quality unit with free extras pretty much. dam tempting

  • This is super tempting - trying to hold out for a 14 inch purely for ease of taking it around for travelling

  • As an owner of legion 5 pro with 3070 and a legion 14 4060.
The pro is a heavy and chunky device with corners and noisy - even when cleaned. I would imagine the noise handled better now, however with a 5060 at hand I would want a smaller form factor. I mean it is a laptop after all.
My legion 14 is an absolute beast and perfect all rounder.
The deal is quite good though.

Also beware that this one doesn't have a USB 4.0, which is a deal breaker for me.

    • I'm curious as to why, future proofing or because you use something that transfers data that fast? USB 3.2 is 10GBps, USB 4 is 40GBps. Is it the PCI-e tunneling?

      • +1

I have external thunderbolt 4/usb 4 ssds that used between different pc/laptops.

        • +1

Thanks for explaining. 10Gbps (800 to 1,050 MB/s real world) is the max on USB 3.2 it seems, I didn't realise that. 800MB/s is plenty for me, but I imagine for some, quicker file transfers are very important.

what do you guys think of this deal for something more aimed towards business ?
Should i wait for black friday lol?

    • Keen to know for business too

  • +4

Bad deal, marshmall0w2 can find the same specs for $1200.
If I hadn't build a new PC recently, I'd be very tempted to get this one.

    • He can't link them. But they were available months ago apparently and were well known deals

      • He will happily link to another forum thread where he is also an obtuse contrarian pest though

  • Ryzen 9 also available for another $200 or so. But both Ryzen 7 and 9 HX chips are battery drainers and likely to runi n the 80-90 degree range based on reviews. No firsthand experience though.
    Personally would wait for BF.

    • Its a laptop CPU, it can do 80-90 under load for longer than the laptop will last.

I have a legion 5 with a hx chip, and the only actual annoyance is the fan noise

  • Buying a laptop isn’t just about the CPU or GPU. You also have to consider factors such as weight, cooling, noise, screen, and others, making it tricky to compare them one-to-one.

    • Good point!
for cooling and noise, is LOQ better or Legion?

  • +1

I just bought this Ideapad for around $300 cheaper. Is the only thing better about this Legion the slightly better graphics card? Seems like the ideapad is far smaller for quite a bit cheaper.

    • decent buy for sure, do you get the free stuff too? GPU / higher refresh rate on the OLED and gsync but the Ideapad would be more compact, depends what you're after or value.

there's also some decent deals legion 5 non pro's which are the 15" screen

      • True the legion has 165hz vs 120hz (can you even tell the difference?) but ideapad has better resolution which I feel like is more important. At least for my usage.

  • AMD processor is a bit of a dog compared to intel processors in this price range. Weird that the Gen10 pro Intel version is old raptor lake instead of arrow lake.

What's the difference between the Pro and the regular legion 5? I'd rather https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/configurator/cto/index.html?bun… with the 255hx (20 cores) vs the 8 core option here.

    • I was deciding between the two as well.

For me the reason I went pro was the non pro has no gsync even though they're both OLED

That and wanted the 1TB and 32GB ram, i know you can upgrade but then again thats more $$

AMD processor should be fine paired with a 5060 imo, but agree intel would of been nicer.

The Pro has 16 inch vs 15 Inch non pro too, that's just a difference or preference.

Can't go wrong with either just comes down to what you want.

  • I got this deal with the 5070 non-pro 15 inch version a couple of months ago.
