Tuff Terrain Poly Footwell Water Tank 40 Litre - $185 (Was $341) + Delivery ($0 QLD C&C/ in-Store) @ Outback Equipment

110

Just picked one up for myself, seems like a steal.

Having a steady supply of water makes every trip easier. The Tuff Terrain 40L poly footwell water tank gives you fresh water for general purpose use without taking up valuable storage space.

It’s designed to fit neatly in the rear passenger section, with a central recess that sits over the raised section found in most modern 4WD footwells. This shape allows the tank to sit flat while making practical use of space that would otherwise go unused. With 40 litres on hand, you’ll have plenty for washing up, cleaning gear, and keeping your campsite organised.

The tank is made from durable polyethylene and includes two ½" BSP brass outlets for connecting a hose or pump. When full, it adds about 40kg of low‑down weight across the rear passenger floor

  • will this fit in a 90 series Prado?

    • +1

      Dimensions: 1200mm wide x 190mm high (30mm for cap) & 250mm Deep.
The transmission tunnel recess is 420mm wide at the base tapering to 200mm wide at top of recess and is 110mm high.
The cut-out for centre consoles is 200mm wide and 60mm deep.

Probably best to measure in case. One would assume though

    • Yeah as per other commenter, best to measure for sure, but it should fit my Subaru outback I’m sure it will fit in a prado. Specifics and actual figment might require some modifications (eg with adding some material to certain sections).

I find it difficult to believe they wouldn't have a list of common 4WD models this fits in. I did a whole rabbit warren deep dive and most of these containers have caveats that it should be installed by "a professional" and outside of dimensions no specific vehicles listed as compatible. Lazy marketing?

      Very much so.

A little bit of effort to get it into popular makes and models would be good, instead of relying on customers to pay and try it out for themselves.
You have to rely on the reviews to get some insight. Lazy.

      Reading some of the reviews:

      • Left and right pockets aren't connected (you'd think they would be).
      • No breather holes… so to use the tanks you have to open the lids to let air in.
      • No clear section to see how much is left, and no other way to measure the level.
      • Doesn't come with any connecters or even a basic hose.
      • No way to transfer water from left to right.
      • Non-potable (apparently very strong plastic taste to the water).
      • Some reports of it leaking (40L of water in the car isn't going to be pleasant).

On the whole, sounds like a good idea implemented poorly.

  • Is this better than 2 20l jerry cans?

    • +1

Do 20L jerry cans lay flat in your rear footwell?

      • Yes

        • Then just dump the body on top of those and get rid of it.

        • If they fit then that's probably a better use of the space as they wouldn't go right to the centre of the car behind the console so you could put something else there. If you want to plumb a tap in somewhere though, then this tank might be a better solution than jerry cans.

      • @thestig don't knock the humble 'Gerry can' it was a marvel of simplicity and design. To this day it's probably the most widely used container (in some shape or form) for liquid storage in off-road travel.
