BESTDAYEVER

I took the family to the Melbourne Royal Show today and just got an email saying I can book tickets for Tuesday through to Friday for 50% off. Best I can tell it does not seem to be targeted.

Even with the cheaper tickets, the cost of rides, food, show bags can add up to quite a bit, if you were planning to go any ways, this might help get the cost down.

Tickets price after discount:
Adult - $24.75
Concession = $17.50
Child = $13.00
Family = $49.50

    Must not be selling well….

Victorians can't afford to go anymore due to all the extra Labor taxes.

    • +5

You mean you don’t want to spend $30 for a $5 shoe bag?

      • +2

No. I don't keep my shoes in bags

      • The average showbag price is probably around $20 these days.

    • +6

This is so expensive that it feels is for tourists, some international students from some rich background, or people trying to snap a few good video clips for their tiktok or Instagram.

i think a lot of people go once or twice and then never again - it is 'something to do' on school holidays so i do understand parents 'trying it out' but i reckon it is losing its charm because more and more people realise the event is a straight up 'scam'

        • Exactly….have been in Melbourne for 17 years but never tried it so wanted to give it a shot.

      • I went once a few years ago and never again. It's just too expensive.

Machete gangs probably get in for free

(Is that a separate bargain ?)

    • +1

That's a Moomba tradition to be fair

      • -1

There are no entry fees for Moomba… yet………..

  • +14

Lets be frank the royal melbourne show is a straight up rip off - it has been rubbish for over a decade why do i pay to get in? then pay for rides? then pay for food? then pay for show bags? i mean WTF am i paying entry for??? there is almost zero entertainment you cant get elsewhere for much less and everything is over priced

i mean people on here 'moan' about the cost of the Village road show theme parks (or even places like Dreamworld) - when you compare it to the cost of the Royal Melbourne Show, places like Movie world look like a massive bargain - you get all the rides you have familier themes and shows and parking is free

    • +10

There used to be free tastings everywhere and an enjoyable day out visiting all the pavillions… Now it is just overpriced rides and showbags full of junk.

yea in the 90s when the Royal Melbourne Show was good….

@jv: i believe you, and in fairness i think some of the other states have a decent show but the Melbourne Show is trash and it has been for decades - im suprised it still exists

          • +1

@jv: "Smoking" car on the train - wow that's showing it's age.

  • +6

Pay $30 for parking or a family of 4 myki for over $30…

Agree they have lost the plot. Thanks for sharing though -this is what they realistically should be charging for admission as a normal price.

    • +4

Entry should be free - you charge for rides or you charge for entry (it should never be both)

everything at the show is 'over priced' so you need to bring the crowd if you cant do that then you're just losing money as a event that offers nothign

the entertainment is fairly rubbish, so you go for the rides and showbags so your just paying to pay for over priced rides and bags of lollies

  • Do they have pigs in the animal pen this year? Last year it was just boring goats, I mean you see one you've seen em all. What about ducks/chickens?

    • -2

Do they have pigs in the animal pen this year?

No, the police pavillion is in a separate area now.

        😲

        • Why are you replying to your own comment?

          • @MrZ: Why do you need to know?

            • @jv: I don't need to know, I want to know.

              • -3

@MrZ: Needs are few, wants are endless.

          • @MrZ: You think they got 130k comments by not posting some absolute garbage over the years?

            • @Pelicannn: That's seriously an insane number of comments. 20+ per day on average. Is there anyone who has more?

              • @MrZ: I know a few on here have 30k+ but yeah, I don't think anyone has the time that jv does.

    • Yes they have ducks and chickens. Did not see any pigs.

  • +6

I've went there the past two years, and skipping this year. Same rides were $10 more last year compared to 2023, and I bet it'll be $5-10 more this year.

Rides cost $200/person if you really want to enjoy the day.

    • +1

$200, really?? At the average cost of a ride, that's 12-13 rides. I don't think the average person goes on nearly that many.

      • +2

Most rides I went on were $20-30. I had $200 and only went on about 8 rides from memory. Went on the massive turning swing twice (30/ride), the pirate coaster (20), the wing glider(15), the tallest swing once (35) and few smaller swings (15/20 each).

The adult games are quite expensive

    • Save up and go to Disneyland instead

  • The Bertie Beetle showbag used to be good, but there was 1 less Bertie Beetle every year, and then one year the taste of it changed… It was still named Bertie Beetle but tasted like compound chocolate.

The best part though is the animals, the farmers allowing us to get up close with their amazing animals.

    • It was always cheap compound chocolate. Atleast since i was a kid and that was 20 years ago.

The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria is a not for profit, they run the Royal Melbourne Show….

Where the fark is all the money going then?????

    • +1

In 2025, they had a net loss of about AUD 4,412,930 from a total of $43 000 000 revenue

They don’t distribute surplus to private owners or shareholders. Any surplus must be used to further their mission (promote agriculture, manage the showgrounds, support related programs).

    • +6

"not for profit" is a 'scam' for we dont pay tax on this organisation but we pay ourselfs shit loads of money (admistration costs)

    • Admin fees and paying the guest performers I would think.

  • honestly trying to find parking for the show is such a nightmare. I wonder what the attendance numbers are like to start this discounting.Last year they were offering discounted after ~3-4pm entry.

    • I remember going to the show in 1991 and dad seemed to find parking ok? But seriously, who drives to Flemington/Showgrounds these days??

      • we did, after a few times around the block we founded some parking late in th afternoon.

    • Many of the local residents offer their driveways for parking for $10-$20. And is really close to the show entrance. It’s better than the offical parking where the walk is even further.

      • +1

Wow, people out there are actually willing to have their driveway blocked for a whole day for a measly $10? How do you even contact these so called people to arrange it?

What about parking at Coles Showgrounds Village?

        • You go there and you give cash.

And the residents can park on the streets, where as you can not.

Coles Showgrounds is only 90 mins iirc

          • @cloudy: It's actually 2 hours parking there. Which realistically means 2.5-3 hours before you get caught. That might be enough time for some people?

        • Some retirees don’t even have car.

      • I parked on the street about a 10 minute walk away (just outside the permit zone areas) for free. Most of the local's houses and the church I walked past were asking $20 or $30.

  • +1

is it discounted because it will be raining rest of the week ?

  • took us 45 minutes to get into the carpark because there were only have 2 eftpos machine operators. day was miserable before we even got in.

  • +1

$10 should be the normal price for adults. $49.50 is a ripoff.

  • +3

I hate their AI generated poster soo much. Looks like a high school project.

  • Is this similar to the Sydney Easter Show? I've never been to one like this in Melbourne before.
