HSBC Star Alliance Card - Updated Discussion

Starting this discussion to note latest update

UPDATE Oct 2025: Annual spend to reach GOLD status now dropped to $48k instead of $60k , still high but a welcome change.

Unfortunately no drop in high annual fee.

Some more tips on spend:

  • All my transactions via SNIPP (to ATO and Bpay) all got me points and added to annual spend

  • I stuck with Air Canada as I understand my current GOLD (started Feb 2024) will only expire 31 Jan 2026 (I don't remember why it didn't expire by 31 Jan 25?)

  • Now it will renew after my current $48k spend so on Feb 26 will get another 13 months (to 31 Jan 27)

Question

  • If you moved to Singapore Airlines (my personal preference) did you get less Status period?

  • Did you have to move before the new year kicks in?

  • Are there any benefits over Air Canda (other than SIA points more valuable and easier to use)

  • What is your annual fee?

    • Annual fee is $499 which means you really need to make good use of your GOLD status.

I do about 20 flights a year around Asia using SIA and Thai. Doing a EU trip next year using Turkish airlines.

Greatest savings I make is the full use of extra luggage and going via Singapore always with an overnight connection, you can easily sleep in GOLD lounge and use showers instead of booking hotel room, which in Singapore can easily cost over $200

  • IMO, the downside of this card is the $3000 limit on points before they reduce each month. That's just ridiculously low. But in answer to your question, Kris Flyer is a tricky program because of their hard expiry policy. Air Canada lets you keep your points as long as you have activity Why do you think Singapore are more valuable, I would say they are if you are flying with them but otherwise not sure. Air Canada has a few niche partners.

    • When I had SIA points it was so easy to find award flights and the cheaper saver ones too.

As I do most of my travel in Asia, I find having access to SIA award flights more handy.

  • I am currently with Air Canada, was about to move it to Singapore on my renewal. But i got busy and totally missed it by about 2-3 weeks.
I tried to email Star Alliance to change it but it was too late apparently.

Anyway, my observation is that, with Air Canada 45k point will allows me to travel from SYD to BKK via SIN on Singapore Air (one way Business class) on low season.

I don't know if you can get one way Business Class with Singapore Air on Kris Flyer for 45k point i think it requires at least 68.5k Point.
So that's why i am going to stay with Air Canada… only to accumulate point and travel on Business Class once a year.

  • +1

anecdotal but i've cancelled my HSBC card for a few months now (12th August) and still have my United Premier Gold (30th September)

    • lucky… i cancelled mine back in June and my Air Canada status was gone in about a week

  • Do we think the bonus point sign up offers are done and dusted?
