Tastes meh. Only popular in certain cultures because of what it resembles.
What does it resemble?
Kabuto.
Korean?
Pyongyang's finest!
I have had them fresh off the reef and they were nice. Need careful preparation though, and can be tough if you cook too long or don't tenderize them first.
Tempted to get some just to see if I can cook them. Easier getting frozen than swimming in shark infested waters trying to pry them off a rock.I think what it resembles will look the same regardless of what culture you come from.
what do people usually make with these?
Goes good in soups or congee.
Braised with shiitake mushrooms in an oyster/soy sauce.
Poached then topped with ginger & shallots with hot oil, then a soy/oyster/sesame oil glaze on top.
+1 goes well with soup, or works if you steam with garlic + some chives
I got a can of cooked aussie abalone and just put it in my insta cook high pressure cooker along with pork bone, apples, carrots and about 2L of water made a soup it was very yummy.
In a can it is ready to eat and has a nice brine with it
Not sure about these small ones, but ones close to half a kg, either samshimi, have it very thinly sliced in a steamboat/hotpot, or wokfried works really well.
OOS already.
