  • anyone know how much mechanic shop discount from the engine oil change bill if you bring in your own motor oil? $25? or $100 off?

Many shops refuse to use brought oil..

        from chatgpt:

        Good question 👍

How much a workshop will actually discount depends on the place, but here’s how it usually works in Australia:

        • Workshops normally split the invoice into two parts:

          1. Labour charge (the mechanic’s time to drain/refill oil, swap filter, dispose of old fluids).
          2. Parts/consumables charge (engine oil, oil filter, sump washer, rags, disposal fees).
        • If you bring your own engine oil:

          • They will normally remove their oil cost from the bill.
          • Example: If their standard service includes $100 worth of oil, they usually knock off around that much.
          • BUT some shops add a “BYO parts surcharge” ($10–$30) because they lose profit margin and still have to dispose of your old oil.
        • If you bring your own oil filter:

          • Same deal — they’ll remove the cost of the filter they would have supplied.
          • A typical filter is $15–$40, so expect that reduction.
          • Again, some may charge a small surcharge for fitting customer-supplied parts.
        • Bottom line:

          • If the oil is normally $100, you’d likely pay about $70–$95 less, depending on whether they tack on a handling/disposal fee.
          • If the filter is normally $25, you’d likely pay about $20–$25 less.

So yes — you do save the parts portion of the service, but not always dollar-for-dollar because workshops make margin on supplying parts, and some will offset that with a small surcharge.

👉 Do you want me to break down how this might look on a sample invoice (labour + oil + filter + consumables) so you can see the exact math?

I did that all the time with Mazda dealer and they will deduct it wirh same price of what they would charge if I use their oil. Different story with franchise mechanic or independent one. Some refused to use yours and some will allow but add $10 or so. I have been with mycar, autobarn, ultra tune and other independent ones. I would normally check how much is the total cost to do basic service then will go to Mazda dealer to service if the difference not too big as they will deduct more as they charged more for their oil.

Bit like taking all the ingredients into a restaurant? Remember when the mechanic supplies items they have a warranty, when you supply them they do not.

I haven’t had the best experience with Castrol engine oil so I would say it’s likely better. However, Castrol manual gearbox oil (VMX-M) has been game changing for a R150 gearbox.
