  • Any idea of shipping time?

Either way, I'd probably end up going with this two port 3A one for $5.09 delivered: http://www.tinydeal.com/dual-usb-ports-mini-quick-car-charge…

    • Shipping time is roughly 1 - 6 business days depending where you are.

    • Do you know if that tinydeal one has both ports rated at 3A each? Usually they have one at 1A and the other at 2.1A.

  • These would work with Android devices?

    • USB uses the same wires for power in every configuration, so yeah, Android or any device that can charge off of 5V DC and 2.1A or less would be fine with the normal appropriate charging cable.

      • +3

Dedicated charging USB ports are different.
        There are many charging 'specs':

Dedicated Charging Port (usually 1A, spec enables up to 1.5A, a USB spec)
        - D+/D- pins shorted
        - majority of Android phone chargers are configured this way, and hence the smartphones will fast charge whith this
        - Older Apple devices will not charge with these (though I'm not sure about the iPhone 4 onwards)

        Apple 1A Port
        - D+ set at 2.0V, D- set at 2.7V
        - only Apple devices will fast charge with this spec

        Apple 2.1A Port
        - D+ set at 2.7V, D- set at 2.0V
        - only Apple devices will fast charge with this spec
        - only iPads take advantage of the higher current

        Samsung 2A Port
        - D+/D- both set at 1.2V
        - Behaviour of Android smartphones is variable (most will fast charge)
        - Samsung tablets and Note 2 uses the higher current

There are others (Apple 0.5A, Sony?)

        TL,DLR
Apple compatible 1A/2.1A chargers won't work with Android, unless you crack open the device + pull out the 2 pairs of voltage dividing resistors + short D+/D- or alter them appropriately for Samsung device. Or use a specialised charging cable with these modifications built in.

        • Interesting. I've been using my ipad charger with the gs3 and it works fine. Sometimes better than the one the gs3 came with. Any clue?

        • I've not checked with Android phones released in the last year, but it certainly was a problem before that. Maybe Samsung phones detect the Apple standard and vice versa (HAH! yeah right).

I'd check if your GS3 says it's AC charging or USB charging. And if it's AC charging, you need battery apps (+/- compatible kernels) to check if the phone is really charging at 700-900mA.

          Ditto to CVonV below.

          TL,DNR again:
Stick to what the charger says it's compatible with. With other combinations, your mileage may vary.

    • Was wondering the same thing. I have a HTC CHACHA Android phone and I find the the official or 3rd part 1amp car chargers just can't deliver enough power to keep a 3rd party GPS application running without draining the battery and eventually turning off.

Would a charger that provides a higher AMP rating help?

      • Most chargers deliver 700mA or 1A, so this is more. However if the phone doesn't draw more anyway, this won't help.

  • Yeah they do, I use my ipad charger on all my usb devices, obviously they won't utilise all of the 2.1amps but it still charges a lot faster then pc usb ports and 1amp chargers.

LOl tried to pay with paypal - "this merchant is currently unable to receive payments"

    • i had that issue too. but credit card works fine. i ordered 3. Very rare to see a branded product like griffin discounted some 70% off.

PayPal has some payment system updates going live today (Feb 1st), perhaps they have not updated the site.

  • Good deal, their pricing on Otterbox cases for iPhone 5 is also pretty good, assuming they are genuine.

Tried paying via paypal and got:

"This recipient is currently unable to receive money."

    A little concerning….

Following a previous deal of lightning cables, I went to iByte's website to buy a few cables and this 2.1A car charger adaptor. Items arrived; cables as offered but the Griffin came in a small plastic sleeve, not in retail box.

On opening, the Griffin item looks used and full of scratches.

Communicated with seller and this Frank guy replied saying he will refund once i send back the item. Fine, sent the item back, send a couple of emails and no response. Frank also mentioned that its already free shipping, thats why no retail box can be sent as postage is expensive. However its not indicated on the website the item comes in a miserable used plastic sleeve. Lucky for me, I used Paypal so raised a dispute and still the seller did not respond so I had to wait out till the dispute cycle end and Paypal did a refund.

The message here: be aware of this incident, Paypal not allowing this seller to receive money may be due to reasons such as too many disputes on this seller or it may have been other issues. The Griffin price from this seller no doubt is cheap, but you pay for what you get.

Got all email correspondence and photos of the actual item with dirt and scratches as evidence.

    • I was skeptical about the price on the Otterbox but the front page of their site says they are official resellers so I'll be extremely pissed off if the case I ordered arrives outside of the genuine packaging, we'll see I guess, I paid by credit card so can raise a charge back if that happens.

      • Hi Scratch2k,

All our Otterbox products are 100% genuine and come from an Australian distributor.
If necessary, we can supply all the receipts of our orders to a mod.

        • You ignored his concern about the packaging. Provide a proper answer to it.

        • +1

Read the reps comment below this, it explains in regards to retail packaging.

Seems fair enough since they are providing free shipping.

        • Not really, I've be surprised if Otterbox would like their Official resellers sending our their products without the packaging, I'm all for saving on postage and ultimately I'll rip the thing out of the packaging and throw the packaging away BUT the packaging is one indicator that you are indeed getting a genuine article. Of course, having said that, if it smells like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck (i.e. I have a genuine iPhone5 Otterbox already so I can do a direct compare, I will do so and report results when my order from iByte arrives).

          Hi Scratch2k,

          Thanks for your genuine concerns.
We have never said that the Otterbox does not come with retail packing.
The only reason why the Micro Car Charger does not come with retail packaging is like fenetic mentioned before, we are selling them at $7.48 and with the retail packaging, it would cost us $6.60 to ship which is not viable for us.

However, other items for example like all Otterbox accessories do come with full retail packaging and hologram stickers.

Also, I like to add that if you are worried about the authenticity of our Otterbox products then please let a mod know and we will be more than happy to provide proof that we order our stock from 1 of 2 only Otterbox distributors in Australia.

We have sold roughly around 300 Otterbox products since our launch and not a single person has questioned it's authenticity after receiving the product.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

          Thank you,

          Frank

        • Absolutely does, thanks for the comprehensive reply and apologies for my disproportional overreaction but I think it is reasonable to be cautious about this sort of thing given the prevalence of fakes and your excellent pricing (you should post a bargain! :)

    • +1

      Hi LurvinOZB,

The item is not in retail packaging because like I said, we are selling the item for $7.48, shipping with the retail packaging would cost $6.60 and that is not a viable option.
In saying that, if you wish to have the retail packaging sent, please let us know and we'd be more than happy to send you the item with retail packaging providing that you pay the $6.60 for standard parcel via AusPost.

We are sorry the item did not meet your expectations but the truth is we have sold more than 500 units of this item and you are the only complaint that we've received, not saying that you are lying but most likely it may have been "scratched" during transit to our warehouse or to you resident.

Also, we did not refund you immediately due to the fact that we are currently having difficulties with Paypal.
Paypal has requested some documents and we are in the process of requesting our Business Name certificate reissued to us to send to Paypal, in the meantime Paypal will not allow us to issue refund. I hope you understand.

      Best regards

  • A lot of these griffin on eBay/net are fakes. I wouldn't even trust them if they sell it at some dodgy store.
I've seen 1 thats look like the real thing. (Twin Micro 2amp charger) Went to the official Page/email them and they say hey don't even make that particular model.
If you reeeeally want griffin get it from their online store.

  • Fake or otherwise, I don't get the design. The cig lighter holes in the cars I've had are round. What's with this square/rectangular "peg" in a round hole?

  • Paypal error: This recipient is currently unable to receive money.

    • We are sorting this out with Paypal at this moment and should be back online shortly.

    • That one doesn't do 2A.

      • pray this one dose not fry your phone/pad…
