I Bought a Refurbished Laptop and Found The Warranty Terms Changed after Purchase

Hello, a few weeks ago I was looking at JW's refurbished laptops I found a "(Refurbished) MSI Raider A18 HX A9WIG" ummed and went stuff it buy. I bought it and registered it with MSI which gave me a total of 15 months 12 months plus a extra 3 months for registering it.

But hang on didn't the listing say 24 months warranty? Went back to it. and the listing has been changed.
It's gone up by $100 weird because they only had 1 and it now lists the laptop to only have 12 months warranty.

But the google search for the page shows it having 24 months in the summary. If you want to check it yourself search on google for "(Refurbished) MSI Raider A18 HX A9WIG warranty" it will show it in the first result under the AI overview
"(Refurbished) MSI Raider A18 HX A9WIG 18" 4K Mini LED …
JW Computers › … › Laptop Computers
On top of that MSI do provide full 24 Months warranty for all refurbished Laptops. Screen Size: 18" 4K Mini LED 120Hz Display; CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D .."

Is this something a store can legally do? If does have issues in 18 months time will fair trading etc help? Otherwise do I have any other options?

Thank you :)

I'm not a gamer (or do video editing), but damn.. $4700 for a refurbished laptop!

    • haven't there been deals for 5090 laptops for this price or cheaper NEW?

    • I don't even spend that on a new laptop.

  • Is this something a store can legally do?

Change a listing they have for sale? Yes they can!

But hang on didn't the listing say 24 months warranty?

But did it? What does your receipt/invoice say you have?

It appears MSI reduced its terms recently, hence why all the search results and AI are showing the old terms.

If does have issues in 18 months time will fair trading etc help?

Again, what does your invoice say you have? You can just invent terms you want.

  • It may have been a typo. Have you asked JW?

I saw they also sell extended warranties, as do Lenovo/Dell etc

Do you have a screenshot of the page when you were buying it? Or any other evidence it was 24 months when you bought it. A search engine result is not going to cut it.

To answer the question, no an express warranty period cannot be reduced after purchase. This is as per s 59 of the ACL.

"59 Guarantee as to express warranties
    (1) If:
    (a) a person supplies, in trade or commerce, goods to a consumer; and
    (b) the supply does not occur by way of sale by auction;

there is a guarantee that the manufacturer of the goods will comply with any express warranty given or made by the manufacturer in relation to the goods."

However, they are entitled to change the terms and apply them to new purchases. Check your documentation.

  • Nothing I was given from JW shows any warranty time frame. One bit of paper that says "register for an extra 3 months for free" but doesn't mention what the base warranty frame is.
With the extended 3 months it expires on the 10/12/2026 is what MSI reports on their product registered page.
    But it also mentions:
"Warranty Expiration Date (The Warranty information here is for reference only)"
"Only MSI Laptops, Handheld PCs have international limited warranty for 12 months (starting from the date of manufacture or the date of purchase invoice), all other products do not provide cross-regional warranty services. If it is determined that the product is not sold in the region, cross-regional warranty and repair services will not be provided." Does that mean it's possibly showing the international warranty? From what I saw on youtube it has a local and an international or a new one does nothing about refurbs.

This is the only thing it says on the receipt that isn't mine or JW's details or how I paid.

    (Refurbished) MSI Raider A18 HX A9WIG 18" 4K Mini LED 120Hz Laptop, Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD, GeForce RTX 5080 16G, Windows 11 Pro
    SKU: 825838 $4,599.00
All I had to go on was the page listing which has since been modified.
It had a warranty card for "a samsung device" which might be the ssd in it but it mentions devices like watches by name. Not exactly helpful for a MSI notebook. That's why I was confused and wanted to ask if I should save web pages or screen shots of google searches. Or if they can change terms after sale and that was fine in ACL etc. :)
