Szumark (Supermarket Discount Tracker App) - Rebranded, Improved, More Insights

Hi everyone,

One year ago I posted about the release of my app which at the time was called Supermarkit. Since then the app has been renamed to Szumark (https://szumark.com.au) and undergone various improvements.

As of today, Szumark has monitored 51,291 products across the 3 supermarkets (Coles, Woolies, Aldi) and has tracked 74,853,051 data points.

The gradual collection of this data has led me to the next stage of my project - better insights and awareness for users. This includes one of the latest features which is the ability to see and filter how rare a discount is. Products have a rarity rating (R, RR, RRR) with R being the least rare and triple R being the rarest. This allows users to better see what deals they could be missing that might not come back as soon or which deals are likely to reappear soon.

Certain products may also have a buy/wait rating based on historical data. For example, if the system predicts a better discount in the near future is coming, it will suggest you to wait.

There's also a new insights page listing out products/categories/brands which:

  • Are on discount the most

  • Are on half price the most

  • Have the biggest discounts

  • Have the biggest RRP increase

One of the biggest requests has been for a premium (ad free) version and notifications for your favourite products.

Please do drop a comment so I can gauge whether you would be interested in a premium version or whether there are other features you'd like to see.

Cheers and thank you everyone for your support!

    Szumark

That's not a very memorable name.

Definitely wouldn't be paying for something like this. I think you'll find it to be a hard sell. Which means it'll be yet another comparison app that'll stop being updated and fade into obscurity. Then three more pop up. Rinse, repeat.

Why would ppl be interested in paying for premium (ad free) version …

When yours does nothing more than the several (including AI based code) … That have been posted on OZB in last few months?!?!? !!!

How does yours stand out from the others … To a point that warrants ppl to pay for an (ad free) version.

    • I've actually tried a number of apps (some far more popular) and the lack of completeness and features is actually what prompted me to build this for myself in the first place. It started as a personal tool and then expanded it to offering it on the app store.

These are some of the features Szumark offers. Let me know if you know any other that has the following in one app:

      • Full list of discounts (e.g. not just what's on the catalogue and on half price) loaded instantly

      • Ability to see the historical data of discounts

      • Ability to see if the discount is lower at Coles/Woolies

      • Sorting by price per unit

      • Ability to search across multiple super markets

      • Rarity ratings for discounts

      • Insights I mentioned in the original post

Neverthless, I definitely agree there are improvements I can continue to make.

This is my side-hobby project but I'll continue to improve it depending on feedback. There has so far been a lot of people using it with very positive feedback and that helps drive what's next.

You've got the data, but you're making people do the hard work of looking up all the items. Charging them for that, a product that's meant to save them money, is a hard sell without a clear benefit.

IMO you need a selling point beyond "here's all the data, have at it".

I think this is a great idea and would def throw a few bucks at it as a one of payment. Very keen on the rarity feature as we all know that many items often go half price.
As long as I could favourite an item and then on Wednesday see all my favorites that are heavily discounted for that week, I could then do a quick shop to stock up.

  • If you’re a regular shopper, chances are you already know what goes on special regularly and what doesn’t. This is quite useless.

  • For this App to be worth something, it needs to be more than a database where you have to use text search to find items.

I just tried it, and would have expected to be able to scan a barcode to add/find items for a shopping list, rather than have to laboriously type each item in.

It doesn't even have predictive search, so you have to type in more details to find the correct results.

Bargain hunters who would use an App like this are always looking at unit pricing. Unit pricing should be the big red bold price, not the packet price.

the current pricing in search results doesn't show what the recent best prices were. You have to scroll to the greyed out difficult to read expired deals to try and see what is the expected sale price. Even then there is no context in the search results as to when those expired prices were last available.

I know my normal items and which ones are on regular "1/2 price" rotations, but this could have been useful to highlight the ones I buy that are rarely on sale.

I appreciate a lot of work has gone into creating this, but it's just not worth the effort to use it in its current format, let alone pay for it.

  • Is this app still in test? I checked the Coles Connoisseur 50% special only to find that the data is dated September 2024, more than 12 months old?

    • It's been running consistently for over a year now. You must have searched up an expired deal and it reveals a few things to you:
      - All the past times it's been on discount and for how much
      - The lowest discount there's ever been
      - The most recent discount

      • Thanks for responding. I checked the details to confirm that the offer (discount) is only starting tomorrow (8Oct). Just confirming the app will provide current week offers, not future (1 or more days advanced)?

        • That's correct, app shows deals which is currently on offer (not in advance).
