560S if you're on a budget, 600 if you're happy with its tonal balance compared to the 650/6XX, otherwise wait for better sales.

It would seem the new HIFIMAN releases have spooked Sennheiser into some more price cuts.

    • I've been using my HD600s for 10 years and still love them, but I'd prob recommend others to get something else. Samsung have discontinued selling replacement drivers, so they are much less user serviceable.

      Really shitty imo.

      • Was honestly kind of Samsung to do that for you for so long…

No but seriously, Sennheiser typically sell the full driver and enclosure as a package, and from memory one of those and a pair of pads now almost costs almost as much a new pair of headphones on sale.

Drivers are also matched in the factory, so the replacement part strays away from that a little bit. All of that said, do you have confirmation on this, is it specific to Sennheiser AU?

        • Look around. All you'll find are out of stock shops and forum posts asking what happened. Global.

I would be delighted to be wrong about this, but I don't think I am. Instead I bought another pair of HD600s to hopefully last me another 10 years lol

          • @Joost: There's comments going back 13 years, but most mention to just contact Sennheiser directly in your region.

I did that and got quoted something like $150 for the 650 part, I'd imagine it's similar for the 600.

            • @jasswolf: ? Why didn't you ask for a hd600 driver? That's what we're talking about here…

Is the 620s worth it at $249? I can’t decide between these and the fiio ft1

    • +2

FT1 for better tonal balance and bass quality, HD620s for passive isolation, and treble quality, but you'll want to EQ, and the bass takes a hit.

FT1 on sale is also almost $100 less via AliE.

I know they're not the best but the 599 has to be the comfiest set of cans going. If you're unaware don't assume they all feel the same. The clamp is much stronger on some of the others like the 600.

    • I really like them. Very comfortable even with glasses.

I'm thinking about grabbing a spare pair for when the ones I own now eventually die.

  • Are the HD6XX better value at 300ish? From MassDrop US

    • I've got the mass drop ones, they are great - think I paid close to $300 for them, but for $300 the 'actual' HD600's are a great option.

    • 6XX is good value if you want a 650, but should be $270ish in November, 650 itself has the occasional $330-$350 sale if you want a sturdier build and a marginally more refined sound (entirely due to the impact of the different housing).

      • If you had to pick one, id use it predominately for music and some single player games, using no amp initially, what one would you pick?

        • Anything producing audible signal has an amp, but regardless still the 6XX/650. Both require a competent amp, they just have better overall timbre than the 600 and don't get too sharpish with the voicing. 6XX/650 are basically the best timbre you can get in a headphone without spending over $1000.

It's a headphone you'll keep going back to as a reference, and it's great to have in a - hopefully modest - collection of such things.

          • @jasswolf: Not sure if you could advise, but I thought about the HiFiMan Ananda Nano (?) which impressed me when able to hear it. But after reading so many uncomfortable stories of general HiFiMan poor QC, I thought I don't wish to spend that money and throw it away after 12 months or less, on any of that brand. Was curious of the B & W Px7 S3 as an allrounder solution, and of course the Sennheiser 600 or 650/6XX.comments sounds great, although not having heard them.

            • @JonnyQuest: The Nano has its own quality issues with regards to driver matching (and most planars do have about double to quadruple the error rate of matching issues compared to dynamic drivers), so you should probably skip those.

The fun thing about HIFIMAN headphones is that there's a new one every 6-12 months, and that's happened now with the Edition XV, Ananda Unveiled, and the HE600. Above that there's also that Arya Unveiled, but you'd probably have to import it from China to get it for under $1600.

The HE600 might be your new pick, but wait for a design update that fixes the headband situation.

Not a B&W fan really, and if you need a portable ANC headphone I'd suggest keeping the budget below $250 and something like the AKG N9 Hybrid when it goes on sale against next month. With battery replacement so difficult, it's generally not worth investing so much in a product that will probably be performing poorly in 4 years time. The N9 has fantastic audio quality as is a portent into future of bluetooth headphones.

              • @jasswolf: Very good of you to offer the insight (don't know how you do it !) all that knowledge. I hear your wisdom on the ANC and limits on battery. On another thread I think, JB's had the AKG N9 at $199.99 - but this expired very recently.

From what you have said and other comments elsewhere, I am thinking the 650/6XX, may be better suited for me with the apparent extra bass.

PS. Just realised you spoke of the HiFiMan HE 600, (thinking of Sen 600) reviews on that sound awesome - but I can't get over the financial gamble factor of QC.

                • @JonnyQuest: HIFIMAN have excellent after-sales support, doubly so if you buy local. Just properly assess the headphones when you receive them, and ensure there's nothing unexpected with tonal balance, noise, distortion, or any phase mismatch. You're waiting for a design refresh anyway, so it might be a while before you even buy (a good buy price of $700 would probably be in 6-12 months).

6XX is also a fine headphone, and I'd honestly recommend both if you have the budget, then yes a $200 max ANC (which has sound quality issues inherent to the nature of ANC, but those are slowly being solved over time).

  • Been looking to buy a set of headphones for the past year or so, but haven't really had any time to do some research. Also, not sure of my budget. I guess I don't really want to spend more than $300 (maybe I could stretch more if the deal/quality of the product is worth it). I'd like to get something that you can buy replacement parts/pads etc. for if needed. Do you guys suggest something from this sale, or maybe wait for something else to come on sale?

    • These are good prices and popular models at that, so many replacement parts/pads available online. Would go for the 600s personally but do your research.

Sweet! I was just considering getting HD600 yesterday. Good timing.

  • Grabbed a pair of HD600s (now at $284)

    • could've waited less than a day and saved another $16…
