    Decent for new nbn speeds?

    • WAN (and LAN) ports are gigabit 1000/100
      Quad-Core 2.0GHz CPU and 512MB RAM

Should be fine, unless you go for the new more than 1G speed plans

    • From reviews (1,2,3) it seems this router can achieve a maximum real world speed of 800-900mbps over Wifi6 (single client). But that is the best case scenario being next to the router and significantly reduces the further away you are. The small size probably hurts its range but you can always use it in a mesh setup.

  • Looks like openwrt compatible as well.

  • is this a good router?

Currently using a iinet/tpg issued TP-Link VX220-G2v; which works okay, but not particularly amazing.
I also want to start shopping around for cheaper NBN providers but as far as i'm aware; my current modem is locked into TPG/iinet.

I think the VoIP part of the modem router is locked to TPG but the DSL modem and router parts should be unlocked. You should be able to use it on any ISP if you don't use VoIP as in telephone service.

      • Yeah i don't use the voip part of it at all.

I read somewhere (either reddit or whirlpool) that this particular router is remotely configured by tpg with a locked down firmware.
Apparently while it can be used with other ISPs, it requires some manual configuration each time the modem reboots to get it to work. Which might be a PITA after awhile.

But the go might be to see how annoying that is and only upgrade my router if/when it pisses me off too much.

        • No the firmware is not ISP locked down except for the VoIP. You can use it on any ISP for the DSL and router part of it. It's a bit like how Telstra Smart modems have a Telstra firmware but it can be used on any ISP except for the VoIP part being locked. You can configure the router settings yourself. That remote configuration was only to allow the ISP to remote configure the modem in case the customer has no technical knowledge of doing it. However the modem is user configurable in the web login.

There's a thread on Reddit about the TPG supplied TP-Link VX420 modem. They spoke about it on there. It would be the same for the VX220 model.

          • @hollykryten: after reading through the thread you linked, it doesn't seem like a particularly great outcome to try and use it with a different isp?

Was hoping it'd say something along the lines of "worked no problems, no changes or manual configuration required" etc

            • @jlien: Well if you're really worried then you're better off buying a new non ISP branded modem router (or just router depending on the NBN technology). Which NBN technology do you use is it FTTN, FTTC or FTTP?. Because if it's FTTC or FTTP then all you need is just a router like the one from this deal. It would be leaps and bounds better than your old TP-Link VX220. But if you're connected through FTTN then you need a modem router so this router only wouldn't be enough.

              • @hollykryten: I have FTTP.

And yeah, it was why i was asking originally. But the ozbargainer in me would prefer not to buy anything if i can just comfortably reuse what I have with the next ISP, even if it's mediocre.

I see a lot of routers advertised on OZB that looks like racks of lambs that cost 400-700 dollars which imho is just too much. So $139 seemed ok; but just wanted feedback on whether i was going to buy somethign that's solid and VFM, or just more heartache.

                • +1

@jlien: Ok that's great. Then all you need is the router from this current deal. It would dominate over your old modem router when it comes to performance and WiFi speed as it's WiFi 6 AX4200 (160 MHz bandwidth through 5 GHz AX WiFi, your old router only has 80 MHz bandwidth through 5 GHz). As in the old modem router would look rubbish in comparison. This is $139 but it's temporarily down from $339 so it's a great deal. You couldn't go wrong with this. Plus there's no ISP branded firmware on this which is a big plus since it's a retail unit. It's better in every way for the price.

                  • @hollykryten: Thanks for your feedback, it's much appreciated!

Do you happen to know how this modem would compare with a TP-Link VX420-G2h?

                    • +1

@jlien: Well this has a USB 3.2 port as opposed to USB 2.0 on the VX420.

But the ASUS RT-AX59U is a really good deal at $139. ASUS is a really good router brand with top firmware update support.
