Not low enough. Bring back the ~$130 deals

    • +10

Last time the DC versions were sold for ~$130 was 2020/2021. I think you'll be waiting a very long time if you want that price. ~$160 is the cheapest it has been since 2024.

      • -4

Then I guess I'll keep on waiting lol

        • I've had this on my watchlist for a long time, I'm not going another summer without one.

      • -1

        I cri evertim

    • Get the larger one and run on lower speed so it's quieter

  • Which is the best deal here?

Tempted to just get the cheapest one and see how it goes

  • +3

There’s no reason to buy the 533DC when the 633DC is the same price

    • +1

In my case I have a very small house and a very small room, space matters! So I've gone with the 533

      • I made the mistake of checking out the 633DC earlier without considering the smaller 533DC. I am intending to use the fan in the bedroom. Wondering do i need to cancel the 633 and to get the 533 or not. It says it is on its way according to the tracking.

Is the 633 that much bigger and noisier than the 533?

        • +2

Just purchase both & return one.

        • +3

At the same price, always go for the bigger one. its like 10cm difference.

If it can push more air, you've got flexibility.

          • +9

@Davo1111: I would think if it's bigger then it needs less RPM for the same effect, less RPM should be less noise. So the benefit of the 633 would be less noise. Don't really know what I'm talking about though, just guessing.

        • +3

I have a 533DC on the kitchen bench and a 633DC on a bedroom floor. 533DC is more compact but the 633DC is nicer if space allows (not that it's really huge either - you can look up the dimensions). Both can be extremely quiet at low speed as the DC motor and speed dial allows for much lower speeds than a typical 3-speed fan, but as you dial up the speed, the 633DC is quieter for a given amount of airflow.

    • Having both I suggest get what fits your needs. You really need a barn to need the 633DC (we actually bought it by accident) and it takes up a lot more space in the cupboard. We do have a very large area room, but as it opens all around and when closed up there is a big AC and ceiling fans, we don’t need a Vornado there. Typically though to get the AC air all the way through to the front rooms we just use a 533DC, shoots all the way down the hallway.
The 533Dc still pumps an impressive amount of air and we bought a second one. We would use those most often.

Both are noisy at high speed so I suppose a benefit of the bigger one operates at lower speed for the same volume of air.

  • -1

    Dust magnets

    • +1

I cleaned mine the other day. They do get a lot of dust, fiddly but not too hard to clean once every year. I took the front off. Plenty of YouTube to show how.

    • I used a paint brush outside and it worked well

    • I have air purifiers throughout my house. My tornado has barely any dust considering I've had it for years.

  • +2

These are great. Have one that I use in conjunction with our split air con and it cools the entire apartment.

On a side note, can anyone recommend a decent DC pedestal fan?

    • +1

The bottom link in the post is a pedestal version of the vornado.

I've got a Xiaomi one we use in our bedroom which is great. On low speeds it can't be heard and it's wifi enabled so settings can be changed, turned on and off via voice assistants and set up to turn on and off based on schedules. They used to be a bit more common but less places sell them now.

      • The bottom link is a vornado with legs (air circulator) - was just after a similar pedestal fan recommendation. Will look into the Xiaomi one. Cheers

      • +1

Aside from above I have an older Kogan DC fan similar to this newer version https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-premium-dc-motor-pedestal… with the same remote, DC motor and 12 speeds. Off the top of my head the first few speeds cannot be heard which is good for light sleepers.

        • +1

@$99.99 delivered (with Kogan First) - it's almost worthy of a deal post itself - thanks for sharing. Looks like a great price

      • I've got a Xiaomi one we use in our bedroom which is great.

Can I ask how you position it in the bedroom? I have heard its best to put it on the opposite side of the room to the bed and have it facing you - but wouldn't that be annoying?

        • +1

I put no research into this but I used to have to the side and facing my face and it would dry me out and give me nosebleeds in the middle of the night. Someone at work said put it at the bottom of the bed at your feet aiming toward you and it will cool your whole body as well. That seemed to work well for me.

      • Which model of Xiaomi is that? I wonder if it has home assistant integration, would be handy to have it switch on automatically which would deter people from turning on the AC if they're already cool enough due to the fan.

        • I've one of the Xiaomi pedestal DC fans and it integrates perfectly with Home Assistant.
In saying that, I usually just increase/decrease speed and turn it on or off.
But you could set up automations or triggers just as easily.

          • @Deviner: Thanks, I think I'll grab a Xiaomi one based on that. There's quite a few models though, bit confusing…

    • Where do you place it in the room to get the most benefit, or just 'wherever'? Reckon pedestal better for working in conjunction with split?

      • Maybe. Our AC is right at the back of the house in a big room (8m). The front rooms don’t have AC and we pump the coo, air all the way down wide hall to the front door (another 12m) with a 533Dc sitting at one wall at floor level. A bit more unobtrusive than a pedestal, but I don’t know it is better.

  • +1

It looks like none of these have a remote. Is that right?

    • +5

Correct, the 3 models in this deal don't have a remote. There are 2 models in the DC range that do have a remote but they cost more — the 6303DC and 6803DC:
      https://vornado.com.au/pages/energy-smart-range

      • +5

Thanks. That's a deal breaker for me then. Pretty dang expensive fans to not have a remote.

I might keep an eye out for a deal on a 6803 as I wouldn't mind giving one a try.

        • We have a Tapo remote power point that works with these. You can’t dial up/down the speed but you can turn it off and on.

      • Damn, I want to automate with home assistant, was thinking I could use IR blaster. Can't use a button pusher robot either as it's a dial not a button. I guess only option is smart switch at the mains, apparently these things wear out fast if you switch them on and off all the time though (I wanted it switching on if someone walks in the room and temp is above a certain level).

    • +1

No remote but I use a smart plug for them.

  • +3

So strange (and frustrating!) they don't make the DC version in black but do for the non DC versions.

  • Good fan but loud at max setting. I grabbed a used 633DC from Facebook Marketplace for $80 a few months ago in July. It does move the air and bounces it off walls. We leave it on at med setting in the Living room and aim the air at the wall so the air bounces to the Family room area and the noise stays in the living room.

    • I got one of these recently from FBMP but didn't really see a difference compared to a traditional pedestal cheapie from Bunnings lol.

However, reading all the positive comments here means I'm not aiming it properly. (Currently have it mounted on a piano stool, aimed at the upper far corner of the room).

How is the aiming supposed to be?

      • +1

Try pointing it at the face of a wall instead of a corner. Slightly off axis pointed at a wall will help circulate the air around the room, whereas pointing at a corner will leave the opposite corner relatively undisturbed.

      • +1

Have a read of the instructions (seriously). It sounds really lame, but it's a air circulator not a fan.

Rule of thumb is to aim for the opposite corner of the room.

        • Didnt he say its aimed at the far corner of the room?

  • +2

    I got both 633DC and 660
while most people claim DC fans are quieter than AC fans
I feel like my 633DC in max settings is as noisy / noisier than 660
the only thing I like 633DC is its a physical knob so I can control on/off through wifi smart plug

    • +2

Vornado's own specifications show the 633DC is louder than the 660 at full speed. The 633DC is reported at 58dB and the 660 at 54dB.

  • Anyone have experience with non-branded DC fans? Is the Vornado premium worth it?

    • +3

I had these in my cart for a while and eyeing it - borrowed my brothers 560 to see how it's like. Definitely can feel breeze around the room but doesn't seem as dramatic as what some people make it out to be even at max setting (which is bloody noisy that it's disruptive if you're not using headphones).

Was hoping to see if the DC models are much more quiet however I ended up buying the woozoo fans which apparently pushes air quite well like a smaller/weaker circulator but its marketed as a fan (maybe not to the level of Vornados) but apparently works well for smaller rooms.

On sale at costco as well: https://www.costco.com.au/c/Woozoo-Globe-Fan-Circulator-PCF-…

I may still pick up the 633 DC for moving air in larger room since I got an open plan living space

      • @atimuslol is the Woozoo a DC or AC motor? The link doesn't confirm it's DC.

        • AC unfortunately. there was a video of someone testing the wattage and at peak power + oscillation flipped on it was taking 48W of power; osc taking up 3W extra; 45W for peak fan speeds.

It's more of a fan with some circulation capability given the vortex style; useful for my use case of being on my computer desk and small rooms (all my rooms are 3x3).

I will still buy a vornado DC probably wait for black friday for the DC one with a remote instead hopefully to move air around in my larger living spaces

    • +1

Nope, Vornado fan you pretty paying much extra.
683DC for example; I can get something much better from Taobao shipped to Australia for 100$

      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/hyundai-dc-pedestal-circulation…
I would just buy something similar from Kogan if you don't care about warranty, probably better than Vornado's outdated design.
You pretty much paying extra for Vornado's warranty

  • I've been running the same 660 all night every night since 2017 and it's still going strong. It would be really nice to be able to use a smart switch though - is the 633DC as loud/powerful as the OG 660? I've actually come to rely on the noise to sleep and I blast it on the top speed in summer as my place gets really hot, so would be looking for something comparable

    • +1

I'm kinda paranoid of the fan noise masking the noise of teenagers breaking in…

      • +2

Which part of Melbourne do you live?

  • Price changes by location, where I live its $250 but 100km away its the $169 price

  • +1

Just here to say that the 533dc works fine off a USB-C PD powerbank. You need to open it up, cut some cables, add an appropriate jack. Then ensure you give that jack no more than 24V.

    i use a barrel jack , a 3 way switch (AC | off | jack) and a usb-c to 20v trigger.

As a camping fan, or clothes drying fan, or camp fire starting fan - it's just amazing.

    • How'd you figure out which cables? Great if I can use it as a camp fan, and curios how long you got out of it from a PB

      • the inside is literally:
AC 2x cables > transformer brick
transformer brick 2x cables > dial
        dial 2x cables to somwhere

i snip the transformer brick cables, add some plugs.
drill a hole, add my barrel jack, add some plugs
drill another hole, add my 3 way switch, add some plugs

        connect plugs.

        primary position: ac power
        middle position : no power
        secondary position: barrel jack.

        • damn good job hehe, as im not as confident with doing this type of thing i had looked for a youtube video or similar to walk me through it - might hold off for now.

      • +1

the 533dc at max speed off AC uses about 36w (with 24v going to the motor)
assuming my powerbank does 20v output only thats then 30w

assuming you're not maxing it, rather going medium, then thats 15w
        assuming a 20Ah powerbank at 3.7v then thats 72wh
        and mathing:
        72/15 = 4.8hrs

and at half speed it still blows better than any other crappy camping fan.
for extra bonus points, add a usb laserpointer on top to help aim the fan.

    • I had been wondering about running it from 12v - do you have a feeling about what percentage power that would be?

      • probably 50% because 12v is half of 24v which is what the fan motor is at when 100%

  • +1

I know nothing about these so please forgive the noob question - but I have a house where upstairs gets hot at night on those summer scorcher days and 2 people sleep up there - we do have AC but it's old and an energy sink - could this help? Even if we don't switch the AC on? We have french doors in each room, so do I point the fan out the doors when open?

    • It creates like a soft breeze . When my kitchen exhaust broke down, I used it pointing towards the window and it worked great.

    • You need to have a source of cool air and an escape for the hot air. Ideally, you put a high velocity fan (e.g. air circulator, high velocity floor fan, small industrial fan) in the cool area, and direct it towards the hot area. The fan will push the cool air into the hot area, while the hot air escapes out. This fan is one of many options that can do the job, you just need to consider price, air flow rate, noise, power consumption, physical size, etc.

      • I have french doors that let in cool air at night from one side of the bedroom, I was told to point the circulator at the roof from the opposite side of the room - but I keep hearing different things from different people.

    • A couple of whirlybirds? They don't need power and they're cooling all the time.

  • +1

Trying to justify the premium for the legs …

    • Same. We have 2 and I often wonder if the stand one would be more useful or not. But the price holds me back.

      • Can't even get the leg cheap no more

      • I ended up going with the legs one but I think I might cancel it and get the legless.

  • +3

I was torn between buying the 660 or the 633DC. I already have 3 660s in the house and they have been amazing. The best fans I have ever had. You point them up at corner of the room or somewhere strategic and the air gently flows everywhere. Super effective when combined with AC.

    Why I was undecided:
    * 633DC is louder than 660, 663DC=59dB, 660=54dB
    * 660 moves significanly more air, 1638 CFM vs 435 CFM of the 633DC
    * 633DC has a switch that stays on and at the setting you select - perfect for combination with a smart plug. The 660 has an annoying button control that has to pushed on again if it loses power, it can't be turned on with a smart plug
    * Power consumption doesn't vary that much except maybe at low speeds. The 660 is 38-35-32-29 watts depending on speed setting. The 633DC states 40 watts, I assume at max setting. I don't know how much it uses compared to the AC fan at lower speeds, others may be able to inform better on this

In the end I chose another 660: It moves nearly 4 times as much air, quieter and with less power than the 633DC when they both are at full speed.

I should add; all specs are taken from https://vornado.com.au/ . I think the 660 high speed air movement spec maybe incorrect on their website. I think its likely it is supposed to be stated as 638 CFM and not 1638 CFM. Even if that is the case, it still moves quite a bit more air than the 633DC.

    • +1

Yes I was mislead by their specs for a blower style air circulator/fan. So much for a premium fan company to have errors in CFM spec.

    • Username checks out!

But in all seriousness, I was in the same predicament as you and I settled for the 660 myself.

I figured it'll take forever to realise the cost savings between DC/AC anyway so might as well just enjoy with 4x the airpower of a 660.

  • +2

Worth adding as a FYI; the best consumer air-circulator fans are not avaible in Australia. The Dreo range is significantly better spec'ed than Vornado in basically every measure. Move more air, more quietly and have excellent 'smart home' controls. App controlled. Full pan and tilt, oscillation if you want that.

    Eg. Dreo TurboPoly 714S moves 1404CFM at 51dB. https://www.dreo.com/products/turbopoly-table-fan-714s

    Unfortunately, not available in Australia.

    • Why is that worth knowing?

      • +1

Some may be interested in the specs of competing units in the US market. It gives context to the Vornado specs. You can do better at the same price. At the moment there isn't much competition for Vornado in the Australian market, so their products haven't changed much for years. In saying that, the 660 has been a great fan for me. This purchase will take my count of 660s to 4, basically one for all the key rooms. But still, I wish Dreo would enter the Australian market.

    • Wish we had Dreo here — Wirecutter loves them.

  • I have 2 vornadoes. I'm not really getting the hype

  • Got the 633 one for about $125 from the last WW's deal. Strong air but bit noisy. DC version has not been cheap since.

Bring up 15% cashback and I will try the DC one :)

  • Excuse my ignorance, I’ve never had one of these fans before, wondering how does it compare to a regular pedestal fan or a AC? Does it cool air effectively or just move air? Our bedroom gets quite hot in summer and my partner wants a Dyson but I’ve seen so many good reviews so very keen to know the differences.

    • these are Air Circulator, slightly different to normal fans
Air Circulator are usually much stronger and concentrated
it helps to move and distribute air
thats why Air Circulator are not designed to blow directly to person
but rather blowing to walls and ceilings and move the air around the room

and because the purpose is to distribute air evenly
it is also making air conditioner or heater to cool / warm the room more efficiently

  • Does anyone know how the Vornados compare to the Muji circulator fan?

    https://muji.com.au/products/oscillating-circulator-fan-larg…

    • +2

      I have both. 1x Muji and 2x 633DC vornados.

      Muji:
      - No where near as effective at moving air
      - It is closer to a fan
      - Light movement
      - But positive is it oscillates (both x and y axis)
      - Only 3 settings
      - Very quiet on low setting
      - Scented thing diffuser

      Vornados
      - So much better at moving air. Like night and day difference
      - Can also be very quiet at low settings
      - At this price of $169 I'd recommend the vornado
      - DC brushless motor

      Verdict: Go with the vornado!

      • Thanks so much for the comparison points, very helpful indeed. Much appreciate your response.

  • Contemplating if it’s worth it for me. Not hot enough to test and return yet. This or just a Kogan fan that’s similar?

  • 533DC has dropped by $10 to $159
