Mens Razors - Face Shaving

Hey everyone,

I’m hoping someone here can help me out. I need to keep my face clean shaven due to my job. Every time I shave (my face), I constantly end up cutting myself. I’d say 95% of the time it’s on my neck.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
- Stretching the skin while shaving
- Using post-shave creams/balms
- Washing my face beforehand with a cleansing face wash
- Shaving in the shower to soften the hair
- Shaving more regularly i.e daily.
- Tried to move electric (no cuts) - but doesnt get as close and this leaves my face and neck red raw!

Despite all of this, I still get nicks and cuts. I'm wondering:
- Is there a specific razor you'd recommend for someone prone to this kind of irritation? At the moment I've tried to rotate between the Mach 3 variety's i.e fusion, 5 blade, sensitive, turbo but honestly questioning whether its all just marketing.
- Any techniques that help avoid cuts, especially on the neck?

Thanks in advance!

  • The last thing you want is a cut when you’re in your best wedding guest attire!

Any techniques that help avoid cuts, especially on the neck?

    Grow a beard?

  • What electric razor do you have? Getting one that suits your skin type does wonders.

I have sensitive skin and found Rotary shavers are way better on my face than foil ones, they also get closer than a razor. The way that did it with least irritation was wet and dry rotary shaver with a shaving lubricant of sorts (and shaved every second or third day, shaving everyday my skin gets irritated)

I now just sport stubble that I trim and shape. Way better than shaving (suits me better as well)

    • Its a foil actually. May i ask which brand/model you have?

I’ve had a Philishave that is very old but works a treat (it was top of the line when I got it maybe 18 years ago and I’m still happy with it).

Prior to that I tried a bunch of Philips and Brauns. I found Philips are much better on my skin than Braun; even the expensive Brauns.

Philips has a decent satisfaction guarantee as well. I would suggest trying a wet and dry Philips, use a lubricant (a shaving oil but in all honesty you can just try it with hair conditioner), and give it at least a day between shaves (make sure you rinse out the blades after shaving). If you’re not happy make use of their satisfaction guarantee

What is everything you use? Brands would be nice to know. Do you use shaving cream? Do you use it with the foil razor you say you have?

For me I found my razor was cutting me and that my shaving foam was making my skin burn so I stopped using cartridges and switched to a de razor. This isn't for everyone though so when you tell me what you have I can point out what might be the problem.

    • I keep swapping…. honestly alot of it is your generic supermarket stuff i.e Nivea, Loreal, Dove with the regular mach 3 stuff.

With my foil razer I just use that dry; ive tried before and after a shower. I actually find it doesnt 'cut' as much after a shower.

      • What brand of foil razor is it? I find it interesting that it irritates your skin even without product. Those products you are using don't seem bad. I use a cheap sanofi shave cream in a tube with nivea sensitive after shave as it doesn't give me any problems and those other brands aren't bad.

I don't think it's necessary to shower when using a foil shaver. I think it's more important for other types of shaving though.

Would you think about trying out a single blade safety razor instead of the cartridge razor? Its not for everyone like I said before but I personally like it. If not I have a recommendation for a cartridge razor if you haven't already tried it before. https://www.shavershop.com.au/gillette/mvp-skinguard-razor-w… https://www.shavershop.com.au/gillette/skinguard-razor-blade… https://www.shavershop.com.au/gillette/skinguard-razor-blade…. This is one I see recommended and it uses 2 blades that are spaced out which is better for sensitive skin. Most of the multi blade razors are too close and cause irritation and ingrown hairs. If this doesn't work you will probably have to get a better foil shaver, try a oneblade or try a de safety razor.

  • You are probably pressing too hard. However most people have a spot that is prone to cutting and you just have to learn to work around it

Also try a shaving cream tub and a shaving brush (just get a cheap brush). It helps soften and raising the hair.

learn how to use a brush and get a rich creamy lather. i had to get taught by indian barbers to really get my game up. get a cheap badger brush on amazon, use a small bowl or mug and get some decent shave cream, i been using this one lately (linked below) and it's very decent for the price. spend at least 2 minutes working it into your face with the brush and 1 minute in your bowl when starting the lather. I use a double edge shaver (merkur 34c) with astra blades. have to do 3 or 4 passes from different angles to get a really good shave.

    • really take time to rub your shaving cream in and get a good lather whatever you use, even if you're just doing it with your hands.

      • Okay; this is maybe what im not doing, im maybe being a bit lazy/in a rush. Ive definitely got a brush here somewhere, sounds like i might not be doing it for long enough.

  • You're getting good advice, but your problem is most likely the same as mine where the grain direction on your neck is a mess and you're always going to be nicking yourself.

I can get a pretty close cut on a beard trimmer (wahl lithium "that's insane" something). Could be worth investing to keep your neck tidy and shave the rest of your face.

  • I shave head and face several times per week. I use the Gillette Fusion razor and The Body Shop's Maca Root & Aloe Softening Shaving Cream For Men. I shave with the hairs first then against. No cuts on face and only occasionally around the side or back of my head when I'm being sloppy. The shaving cream lasts for about 6 months and it received a best in test some years ago. I highly recommend both.

  • What electric shaver? I’m using a Xiaomi 5, and find that it doesn’t get close enough. I do only need to shave every couple of days though

  • Get a good electric shaver (Panasonic or Braun 5-blade minimum) and keep it sharp and dry. Do not leave it in a humid/damp area. Clean it out with water every few shaves and keep it in a dry location afterwards. Lubricate with shaver oil or spray every week or 2.

If you use an electric shaver, I find it is easier to shave in the morning or at the end of the day BEFORE you have a shower because you will have oil on your face/stubble that will make the blades move over your face more smoothly. I do not recommend shaving right after having a shower if you use an electric shaver.

Learn to use a double edged razor, get a good brush and use proper shaving soap. You won't have to shave every day because it shaves so close. It's also cheaper than the cartridge razors that never shave close enough.
Shave after a hot shower so it softens the skin. Get a good lather. Relather after the first pass.

I used to get nicks all the time with cartridges and once I moved to DE Razor it only happens now when the blade is getting blunt. Theres a learning curve but it's worth it.

Use a safety razor. Shit changed my life. Theres' a small learning curve to it but once you get it down, you'll know it for life.
